So, just settling into a morning of cage cleaning and trying to restore order to my house when one of the local rangers phone. One of the rabbits they took in this week has given birth and they only have a skeleton crew on over the holidays…
Please No Oooo’s or Awww’s. This is the reality of Rescue, this is the reality of not getting your bunnies spayed or neutered. Someone dumped this pregnant bunny in unbearable heat without food or shelter.. I simply could not leave her in the pound with only pellets and no one to monitor her and the bubs..
I am trying to find them a foster home as I am already wall to wall bunnies, wish me luck. I think I shall call her Pandora… After all her calamties the one thing that was left was hope.
There are 10 babies, one very thin…. I’ll do my best.
Tanlover,I believe this puts me at 18 (albeit temporarily)
That’s a lot of babies
Wishing health to them and Pandora.
pandora needs to have her box removed.
dont get in over year head. there comes a limit. after the backyard rescue of 3 buns in october. Marjorine and Sidney had to be spayed even though they were basically full term.
doreen took sydney to bond with her bunny doc, and we have butters & marjorine now and cant foster any TTAS buns
That will happen Mike.. I’ll get her to our vet in the next few days and arranged for her to be spayed when the bubs are at 7-8 weeks. If it’s possible to get it done before I will as there was a male in with her the night she gave birth… My vet will know the best course.
Oh Roberta! This is so big of you to do. It must be bringing back so many emotions for you. Sending some virtual (hugs), I wish I could do more.
I’ve always admired the effort and care you went to in finding good homes for Peppers babies.
In a way, your experience with that makes you the best advocate for this rabbit but you certainly don’t need this.
Makes me angry some people can be so irresponsible. But as you said, it IS the reality of rescue.
I take it this was the bun at the pound. So is she under their system or the rabbit rescues? Who’s funding her spay?

…If it’s possible to get it done before I will as there was a male in with her the night she gave birth….
At the Pound?! I’m kinda speechless.
Yep… Our rangers are not the best at sexing bunnies… If it wasn’t for the fact she has been with them by herself for two days and feeding I would have asked to go up and make sure they had given me the right bun… Nipples aren’t obvious but there are no testicles so that’s a start. Pepper was like a walking milk bar… But then she had the best of everything from the beginning, this little one has had it pretty rough… Pandora has now had a big serve of coriander and I am soaking some Pak Choy for her.
No, Pandora is from the same pound but they have only had her the two days. She gave birth the same night they brought her in with the male she was sharing with. All 3 buns are REW’s.
I thought the male might be a REW. Babies look like they might all be REW’s so possible he’s the Dad.
All giants too?
Oh goodness Roberta! That is a full house you have there for Christmas! 0_0
But bless you…those sweet wee bubs! Oh my…. :'(
Hoping for all the best for the mum too…you are rivaling a friend of mine from another forum with the number you have on now. Wow!
I wish there was something I could do to help, but I’ll just send (((((((vibe)))))))) from here for the best outcome for them all. xx
They are lucky to have you… Where would they be otherwise. You’re an angel.
OMG those poor bunnies.
Roberta….. I love you for taking care of those poor hairless fuzz-buns. Words can’t express how happy i am that you decided to (even if it’s temporarily) share your home with Pandora and her babies.
Did you say that someone dumped her in the pound WHILE she was pregnant?? Such irresponsible people we live with in this world. If you don’t spay your rabbit and it gets pregnant. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. You had the choice to make sure no such things happened but you decided against it.
Why? Was it too much money? Why did you buy a pet if you can’t afford to care for it?
I’m pretty sure it costs more to care for 8 bunnies for 10 years than it does to pay for one operation! Now those bunnies are suffering the system for your selfishness.
If my daughter got pregnant, I wouldn’t ship her overseas so “Someone else can care for her.”
The truth is exactly as Roberta said, it’s not “Awww Cute!” it’s inhumane. At the most vulnerable point she could ever be in, Pandora was abandoned. Why? Because someone decided her well being wasn’t worth the effort.
Now I sit here with Muffin snuggling on my lap and I wonder… How could anyone do such a thing? These soft delicate creatures, they deserve our respect. Intelligent, graceful, mischievous little darlings that are seemingly so easy to misunderstand. If you sit and watch they can warm your hearts so much. Yet people think that just because they are small in size, “They must be easy to care for!” But they are not, they are a Poop load of work (Lots of literal poop there… and pee) Still people think, “Oh I’ll just give the babies away, everyone wants rabbits!”
Imagine if every rabbit owner said that, the rabbit population goes up like 5000%. Who do you think will want those bunnies? Nobody! So they get dumped in the pound! Pound has too many bunnies? Then it’s the needle. It isn’t kisses and cuddles, it’s sending an innocent creature to jail, and without a trial, being put on death row. That’s the reality of home-breeding. If your not a registered breeder, spay your rabbits!
It’s also a good Idea to Neuter your rabbits so they don’t impregnate others, but if you “can’t” neuter your boy, Never let him outside your house. It’s to risky.
Now I apologize If I have offended anybody, but I’m just looking at those little bun-buns, and I’m stroking Muffin. And as I do so I imagine Muffin having 9 brothers, and lying in that heap in a pound cell. I can hear a door creak open and boots stomping slowly closer. The cage is opened and Muffin is lifted out. Down the hall they go, into a dark, frozen room. No animal ever returns from this place, and Muffin doesn’t return either. Nobody, knew him. Nobody ever saw him binky, or touched his soft fur. Nobody ever felt his warm tongue lick their hands or heard his teeth make a purr. Nobody cares. He is gone from the world and that life, that potential is gone with him. That is what often happens to bunny’s like the ones Roberta saved. If you don’t understand why Roberta said:
Please No Oooo’s or Awww’s. This is the reality of Rescue, this is the reality of not getting your bunnies spayed or neutered
Imagine your bunny is in that heap. Imagine that nobody came to save him/her. Imagine that s/he is gone. Now you know. It’s not cute, its disgusting.
SPAY YOUR PET OR TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY
Oh Roberta! You are so sweet and kind hearted. How could someone just dump their bunnies at the pound not caring that the girl was pregnant. And right before Christmas? What is wrong with people? Hopefully you can get these guys settled somewhere soon.
Pandora was actually dumped out in the open in a school playground (the temps here have been up around the 100F and we have had no rain, there are eagles and hawks in the area in addition to cats, dogs and foxes… Luckily the rangers responded to a call and went out and caught her and brought her in… She gave birth in the pound that night.
Pandora is finally producing a good amount of milk… Poor little bug must have been starved, she doesn’t even have a dewlap, it looks like she pulled fur from her back for a nest… In the last day that I have had her she has eaten enough to feed four adult rabbits and now has a nice fat tummy and very full teets.
No giants Jersey, Pandora is only a small rabbit and the babies are tiny….
Oh wow, even worse! How awful of someone!
Wait, LHM, did you say Butters and Marjorine? Hahahaha! Does that mean my Leopold would fit in with them?
Roberta, I know you did this forum to get the word out there and not to get any praise, but I’m sorry…. “good on you”!
I know I thought it was/is terrible that buns are prohibited here, but that’s ‘one less’ animal to worry about being neglected in our state. (though I’m not silly enough to believe that).
Thank you for being so wonderful – Pandora and babies Chrissy came a little early for them this year. Merry Christmas to you Roberta.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (is that enough chrissy kisses for everyone/bun?).
Hi, Roberta, this is quite a development. I just want to add a gentle reminder of the rule about posting pix, even though this was definitely NOT an intentional litter. No more pix of them from here on, please. Thanks.
Definitely agree Pam…. Was only ever going to be the one pic…… Maybe later I will post a nice one of Pandora going to a forever home though.
Sadly the little runt of the litter did not make it…. She kept getting cold and even though I managed to warm her I could not get her to feed at all in the end…… There was obviously something else wrong especially as Pandora herself was starving and neglected when she had them… 10 babies was a big ask for a tiny bunny like Pandora especially without proper nutrients and care… Binky free little runt… Pandora should never have been in the situation where she should have to deliver and care for 10 babies or any babies for that matter. At least now she only has the 9 and a safe place with lots of food.
Sad to hear. Have you sexed them yet? You can usually get a pretty accurate rough guess of the males and females. The sex change fairy happens, but then you’ll know a bit. I can scramble up the pics.
Is she a big rabbit? 10 sounds normal for a larger rabbit like a New Zealand, but If she’s really small I’d be concerned on her feeding abilities.
What is she eating? 18% protein is the best. I’m sure you know, but its always good to double check everything
these babies are in good hands at least.
also, and I’m sure you have, but you’ve added a nest box, correct? Want to make sure the babies stay together and nice and warm.. ![]()
Sorry to hear about the runt
sickens me someone would do this ![]()
I’m sorry to hear about the wee one, Roberta. :'( Binky free little baby.
I hope Pandora and the remaining bubs will be okay. They are lucky to have you watching out for them. xx
It’s awful that someone could be so irresponsible as to not only let their rabbit get pregnant but to then abandon the rabbit when she needs care the most? It’s disgusting.
I’m glad you were able to take them in and give momma and her babies the care they need. You’re making a world of difference for these buns.
Muffinluv: I can’t agree with your post more. It brought tears to my eyes thinking about it. Everyone deserves to be loved.
Muffinluv-I whole-heartedly agree with everything in your post. You certainly have a way with words. I want to frame your post and give it to my rabbit rescue for christmas. I seriously love it that much.
Sorry to hear about the little baby. 10 babies is a big litter but its still very sad.
