Well, I am still waiting for my chance to be “owned by a house rabbit”. Life circumstances still haven’t quite lined up yet so I am using my time to learn about rabbits and rabbit care as much as I possibly can now.
I recently came across this series of videos and have learned a ton: Learn how to take care of a pet rabbit from bunny lover Amy Sedaris and rabbit expert Mary E. Cotter.
The more I learn about proper feeding, care, signs of illness…the more amazed I am at the similarities they share with horse care! (which I am very familiar with as I have been around and owned horses for my entire life and even when to college for equine business management).
Here a some similarities I have found:
1. The importance of having a constant source of forage to keep that digestive system moving
2. The #1 sign of illness is a lack of appetite
3. The similarities of colic in horses and g.i.stasis in rabbits…both very serious conditions that are painful and can kill very quickly.
4. The importance of proper dental care (I did not know that rabbits’ teeth continually grow, nor did I know that they can get molar spurs and ramps just like horses).
5. The importance of routine nail/hoof trimming (though this could be applicable to dogs too)
Any others that I missed?
