Gandalf is on penicillin injections because he has had bad snuffles for 5 months now. We have been shown by the vet how to do it and we went back the next day to show her we could do it, success! However, now that he’s at home we’re finding it a bit more difficult. He has 0.25ml once a day behind his neck where that loose bit of skin is on his shoulders.

Does anyone have any tips so that he’ll sit still for us and so that we can quickly administer his medication?

How is the vet giving you the injections? Are they preloaded or did he give you the syringes separate from the actual pen-g?

The syringes and penicillin are separate. We have to draw the medicine from the bottle.

When I had to do this for Pip, I covered his head with a towel a couple times. It seemed to help. I was also told not to inject in the same spot everyday because it would get really sore. My vet said to find a lose bit of skin anywhere on his body.

One thing I was not expecting was that he hopped away mid shot once and I had to prick him twice. That was when he was starting to feel better, was more active, and was catching on that being picked up meant I was going to do something to him that he didn’t like.

              Good luck!

Okay, that’s good because I’ve had vets give them to me prefilled and that’s a problem.

I usually sit down on the ground with my legs spread open in the bathroom (so there is no where for bunny to go) and I place the rabbit in between my legs – facing away from me. Placement can be important. If you have a hard time finding the actual skin – you can squirt a bit of alcohol to spread the fur and that can help too.

I like Dobby’s idea of covering the head with a towel – never tried that but it’s a good idea.

Glad the penicillin worked for you! Feeling optimistic. Me and my boyfriend have been doing it together. I cover his eyes with hand and hold his bum, and George (my boyfriend) tents his skin and injects him. It worked well at the vets but he was a bit swirming at home and he sat in a tight ball which made it hard to grab his skin. Which alcohol do you use for his fur?

Just plain old rubbing alcohol – putting it in a syringe and squirting the area you want to inject seems most effective.

Maybe having him on the ground will relax him more too.

I will have to try that! We always have him on the ground anyway, he’s not the sort of bun who enjoys being picked up. Has penicillin worked for you in the past then?

Yes, I’ve used it for many things – mainly dental problems and it’s worked well. Never used it for Upper Respiratory Infections (that I can think of) but have had many friends use it for that with success.

I hope it works for Gandalf.

Can you get him to hop into a carrier and lift him that way? Either take it to a tabletop or give the shot while he’s in carrier if its top opening style.

Its day 3 and we’re still struggling with injections. We manage to get him relaxed and ready, we’ve moistened his neck so that we can see his skin for better placement but he flinched very time the needle touches him. Are we doing something wrong?!

As I kind of mentioned before, when Pip started to catch on to what I was doing it got more difficult to get him to sit still. I think this make sense He now knows that what you are about to do is going to hurt a bit and isn’t too happy about it. I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. He’s just getting smarter.

I just gave my little guy his first shot of a 7 day course last night and it was pretty easy. I’m expecting that by the time we get to day 7 it will be harder because he’ll know what’s happening and try harder to resist.
