I’ll be going away for five weeks (to another country) and my bunny, who is almost 2 isn’t coming. He’s very clingy and friendly and I’m not sure if I should leave him with my father for the whole time, who won’t cuddle him and only ‘half’ play with him. My bunny, Louis, likes to run around with sweat bands in his mouth while you chase him and get them off him, then he tries to get them back. He also likes to be patted all the time and playing chasing. But I don’t know how much of that my father will manage on a regular basis.

My other option is to take him to my sisters where he’ll be played with and looked after. It’s about 40 minutes drive away and she can always bring him back home after two or three weeks?

Louis gets really excited being in new places so I think he should adapt okay (he recently discovered downstairs and is loving running around and exploring). He’s never been to my sister’s house before though. I am also worried leaving him for so long that he’ll forget me or like me less. I get the most licks and followed around the most.

What do you guys think? Will he be okay?

I think first, he will be fine. I know it is scary to leave our fur babies at home while we are gone. Like anything it will be an adjustment for him and when you come back he will adjust again too. Just don’t expect things to go back to normal right away. Give him time to settle back in. I think that your sister sounds like she would be providing similar care to the care you provide so that would be my vote. Is there anyway you could go there and stay for a day or two with him before you go so he is introduced to that environment while you are around?

I heard that sometimes they great really angry or grumpy to their temporary carers? Is that true? He gets upset when we’re playing and I leave the room and will wait in the doorway for me to return (he knows he’s not allowed out in the hallway).

I am leaving tomorrow but we are taking him over tonight and staying there for a few hours, so hopefully that will give us enough time to introduce him to the place. Thankfully it is a lot smaller than our house.

Thank you so much for the extremely reassuring reply!

I left for a month and took my two buns to a friends house. When we brought them back home it was like we started where we left off. They almost seemed relieved to see me again because when they were at my friends house they never came out of the cage whereas here at home they are out a good 12+ hours a day.

Some buns give their owners a grumpy attitude after a vacation but they usually go back to normal pretty quickly. But you don’t have to worry about him forgetting who you are. That was my biggest fear with Sally and Harley was they would forget and we’d have to rebuild our relationship but nope! They remembered me. Now, Sally gave the bun sitters a sour attitude and wouldn’t let them pet her and was fearful but Harley acted normal with them so that just depends on the buns temperament on how he will handle your sister taking care of him but I’m sure he’ll warm up quickly. He seems pretty easy going.

It depends a lot on your bunny and their individual personality. I went on vacation for 2 weeks over the summer and had a house sitter come and stay with my little brat. From what the sitter told me, she was quite the stuck up little diva for the first few days, but after the two weeks were up, the sitter was considered a new friend. She did give me attitude for the first few days I was home (because my bunny is a brat) but it didn’t last long.
Your little guy sounds really chill so I wouldn’t worry too much. He will have to adapt either way but the set up is only temporary.

I would probably go with your sister, since your bun is obviously used to lots of attention. Make sure to give her a detailed care list along with letting her know about signs of illness and vet numbers.

The longest I’ve been away from my buns is 8 days. I thought they would be super happy to see me but, in truth, I think they were much more excited about the treats I brought them. Many members report gettin “the bunny butt” after a vacation away but the buns get over it.

I just came back from leaving him with my sister.
At first he was really timid and stayed at the very back of the cat-carrier that we had borrowed from a friend, but he then started to get restless and even tried to pull his sock (a very favourite toy) into the cage through the bars so I opened it up. He attempted to get out and explore several times but was too shy to fully come out. So I picked him up and took his carrier away and he started to jump into his litter box and the box I had brought that contained all his toys. He started to do a bit of a low, curious crawl as he explored a tiny bit of the house, then we both shared times with him on our laps while watching tv and patting him because he was very tired (he usually sleeps in the afternoon but couldn’t because of his trip).
All the while we fed him one of his favourites, snow peas.
He seemed fairly happy after a while and when we put him in his cage outside he seemed to adjust just fine!
I got plenty of licks and so did my sister!
I made a 9 page instruction manual with him, including an image of him sleeping because we always think he’s dead – he’s such a deep sleeper!
Only problem now is that I’m not sure that I will adjust to him being gone! I miss him already!
Thank you so much for all your lovely replies, it really does make me feel better!
                    Thank you!!

I don’t have anything else to add other than how cute the description of your bunny is! I wish mine carried socks and liked playing chasing games I’m sure he will be fine anyway!

The first rabbit I had, before Louis, was a ‘normal’ breed of rabbit and all she did was chew books, occasionally pee on books and sit around. Where as Louis, a boy mini lop, is the exact opposite. I had no idea he was so playful until one day he picked up a discarded sock and started to run with it! He once tried to take one of my slippers!

Got a text from my sister the morning after, she says he’s settling in fine! Hurrah!
