Gandalf is 7 months old and he’s sneezed ever since the day we got him. He has been on antibiotics 4 times now but as soon as he finishes his medicine he starts sneezing again! He sneezes so frequently that his paws have become matted from wiping his snotty nose and as soon as I clean them for him they get dirty again. He’s still very happy and cheeky and he doesn’t let it get him down but surely there must be an answer to constant sneezing? All his bedding has been changed and we don’t use strong fragrances in the house. Can someone suggest anything?

What anitibiotics has he been on? What does the vet think the problem is?

The vet has always been sympathetic but doesn’t really have an answer, they just say ‘maybe he’s just a sneezy bunny?’. They have suggested to get his nose cleared out in case he something stuck up there? And I’m not at home at the moment so I can’t check the bottle but they are the only ‘rabbit safe antibiotics around’ apparently. He takes 1ml in the morning and 1ml in the evening x

Probably Baytril. There are other rabbit safe antibiotics out there though. Baytril is probably the most commonly used.

Does he have a snotty nose, clear or white? Kinda sounds like pasturella, kinda doesn’t.

edit : wanted to add, it doesn’t really sound like pasturella if there’s no snot. It could be allergies, something in his nose for a long time (have you cleaned his nose?).

Baytril is the most commonly used, but it doesn’t treat _every_ URI. There are other treatments if Baytril doesn’t work. Has your vet run a culture or any other tests ?

                  Also, have you considered allergies?

Yes, he’s on baytril. He has a VERY snotty nose, bless him. Its white/creamy. His poor paws are all matted because he keeps wiping his nose.
We have considered allergies, when he first started sneezing we changed all his bedding from woodshavings to paper bedding, we use dust free hay, and we don’t use any strong fragrances in the house. Surely if he had something up his nose, like hay, wouldn’t it have come out by now?

Seems to me your vet is not very rabbit savvy or they would be trying to find a solution. There are several possibilities, could be bacterial like Pasteurella, in which case a culture would need to be done to determine the presence of the bacteria. Or it could be some type of infection, like sinus or respiratory.

Is there another vet in your area you could see?

I feel bad for your poor bunny.

It’s a shame about the vets because they are always so lovely in there. I’m gonna try one last time. I’ve booked him in for an emergency appointment and made it very clear he needs a closer inspection. Bless him though, he is a trooper! I will suggest to them what you have said, and make sure I come out the vets with more than just MORE antibiotics!

I would suggest them doing a test also.

I have one bunny prone to sneezing with NO discharge and one that has recently begun sneezing excessively WITH the discharge. He has been on two antibiotics (baytril and zithromax) and neither worked. My vet believes he may be having trouble getting the gunk out of his nose which is causing the bacterial infections to begin because he’s not flushing any of the bacteria out himself. We have started to do simple nose flushes (vets orders) on him once a night to see if it begins to help him.

I would suggest having your vet trying going on VIM and looking up information on how to treat. Even if he’s not completely rabbit-savvy, there are other ways for them to look up more information on this issue. VIM is a great vet resource – I would ask if he has access to it.

I went to the vet last night for a proper consultation. These were the options given to me: A culture and sensitivity test, Eye drops to flush out the nasal passage, Penicillin injections, X-rays to see if there is a blockage or to be referred to a specialist.
We have decided to go with Penicillin injections because after much research we think this will be the best option. I want to go for eye drops but I don’t think I could successfully get something in his eye every night, so to guarantee him getting better we think the injections will work best. We were about to do a culture and sensitivity test but was told it was going to cost £75!
Do you think we have chosen the best option?

If the penicillin injections don’t work (which they might not) you WILL NEED to do the culture to see once and for all what you’re dealing with.

Please read this article about C&S tests… this will explain why the test is so important when an initial round of antibiotics don’t work. http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/culture.html

I think it’s a good option and I do hope it works.

Thanks for the link Beka27, it was really interesting! I agree that the test is very important, I just wish they had a special NHS just for animals so that they get good quality but free care like we do!

Haha! Oh I hear ya! Wouldn’t that be nice?! 🙂

Hopefully the pen injections work! Keep us posted!

Interesting. Do you know what the eye drops were? Curious because my vet has us doing nasal flushes with eye drops saline solution (or rather contact solution). We don’t put it in his eye though, we put it in a syringe and squirt it into his nose to flush the nose.

He described it at Dacrocystitus and eye drops would have to be used which would flush out his nasal passage and relieve any blockages. We only decided against it because I couldnt image successfully emitting eyedrops every night, haha! x
