Conjuctivitis and cataracts!!!!
I feel horrible that I did not notice this huge abscess/cyst type thing which is by his shoulders and on the same side as his big old ear infection. The vet could not really get anything other than some fluid out of the cyst. His paperwork states it is a 3 inch subcutaneous mass w/deep tissue attachment to the scapula. She said it is fluid filled and we just don’t know at this point what it is.
So we are doing Zequin for the mass and ears, ear drops and eye ointment.
Luckily he’s still eating.
She’s not even sure if it is something that could be removed at this point and he is 12 years old too so that is something to consider…we will see if the Zenquin shrinks it any. I asked her if she thought the ear infection and the shoulder mass might be related since they are on the same side and she does not feel it is.
The problem is that he is so easy going that I never noticed any of these things – just glad I took him in.
Bobby got his teeth filed and all is good and he’s up to 1.76 pounds…he’s gained weight. Cutting back on the treats for him.
Oh Sarita, it’s like you can’t catch a break! I suppose health issues are more frequent in the older buns.
{{{Vibes}}} for Bogie.
Poor Bogie! Don’t feel bad, Sarita. You are dealing with a lot and you are one of the best bunny Moms around.
What are the drops you are using for his ears?
Sending Bogie many, many ((((((Get Well Vibes))))). I really hope that mass starts shrinking soon.
LPT – it’s called Tresaderm – thiabendazole, dexametosone, neomycin sulfate solution.
Oh no! Poor Bogie. Keep us updated. Hopefully it’s not bothering him.
(((((vibes!)))))) for Bogie
Hope the meds help!
I’m not familiar with Tresaderm. Although, it’s very possible I’ve used it in the past. I’ve gone through so many different ear meds it’s hard to remember them all.
How is Bogie doing?
I’m sorry to hear about Bogie, Sarita. Sending healing vibes and prayers with all possible speed for him. And ((((((hugs)))))) for you. xx
Twelve years old! That’s magnificent! A testament to your care. ![]()
Oh my gosh Sarita. I’m sorry. I ditto LPT. It’s completely understandable. Especially being near his shoulder where you would expect the bone to be. Being that he is 12 years old, his immune system is weaker and so he will definitely be susceptible to all of this no matter what. I do hope that Zequin, ear drops and eye ointment helps. I know that is a lot for BOTH of you. Hang in there. HEALING VIBES!
Please send some vibes to Bogie. He doesn’t appear to be any better and the lump/abscess doesn’t appear any smaller…he also does not have his usual good appetite which may be due to the Zenquin…poor Bogie.
(((((vibes for Bogie))))))
Feel better little guy!
I am so sorry you and Bogie are going through this Sarita. I have been following your thread and sending well wishes. I know what it is like to have a sick bunny and it is awful.
I don’t know if this is helpful or not- but in people, antibiotics alone do not cure abscesses. Antibiotics get to infected tissue via the blood stream. Their usually is no blood supply to an abscess. It is just a fluid filled sac- like a water balloon- except that the fluid has gotten contaminated/infected which is what makes it an abscess. In people, we do what is called an I&D- incision and drainage, because that is the only way to get the pus out. I don’t know if they do that for rabbits- but perhaps it warrants asking your vet?
I am sending you both heLing vibes!
{{{{{Bogie}}}}}
Oh poor Bogie
I was hoping the meds would have some effect.
Has your vet said anything further about removing the lump? I realize he may be a bit old for a GA. If she could get fluid out before then maybe she could drain it completely now? Has it gotten any less firm?
Sending massive ((((((((((((((((((healing vibes)))))))))))))))) for your boy. And (((((((((((((Huge hugs)))))))))))) for you. xx
{{{Bogie!}}}
Sarita, any more clue on what the mass is? Is it at a site where he’s had shots or subQ’s? Or could it be odema? (I don’t know what that would look like in a rabbit).
Sorry to hear about his appetite. I know that certainly adds to the stress. Perhaps an anti-inflammatory might help?
. I was really hoping for a positive update. Come on, Bogie….you can beat this!!! Gotta get well for your Mama!!!!
Is there anything else the vet can do?
((((Bogie))))))
Thank you for the good information Irina. I think part of the problem is that she is not entirely sure what it is at this point. She just wants to see if anything at all happens with the antibiotics.
It’s right behind his ear on his neck area too so I think that is a concern. She wrote on his report card – “a 3″ firm subcutaneous mass with deep tissue attachment to the scapula on left shoulder. The cystology sample showed the mass to be fluid filled (straw colored)”.
I think it’s just a wait and see at this point. He did seem to be eating better though so that’s good.
Did she send the fluid for a culture to see if they can find out which bacteria it is? Also, an ultrasound can show if there are any sold structures within the mass- as in a complex cyst (which has solid and liquid) vs a simple cyst which is just liquid. That may help with the differential diagnosis.
Good luck! Rooting for you both!
She didn’t send it out. I’ll mention the ultrasound although it is so expensive I’m reluctant to spend that kind of money – I know that sounds crass but I have to consider the cost, his age, the possible outcome if it can even be removed surgically which I am reluctant to do at his age.
I know an x-ray would not show nearly what an ultrasound shows, but what are your thoughts on this? I’m thinking she may have to put him under a light anesthesia for this.
If it was one of those fatty masses that wasn’t attached, I would definitely consider that because I’ve had a number of rabbits have these successfully removed.
I felt it this morning and it’s just hard as a rock.
That sounds so bad, I hope every think comes out ok for you. I am glad to here he is eating again. sending wisdoms to help you and the doctor figure it out, so bogie can be heathy and happy once again.
An X-ray primarily shows bony/dental details. It would not help sort out a soft tissue mass. If it is hard as a rock- it is either under a lot of pressure from the fluid/infection- or it is it all
Fluid. The management depends on what kind of mass you are dealing with. Are they convinced it is an abscess? I would not think they need to an aesthetic for an ultrasound of this sort because the bunny could sit on your lap while they used the probe. I don’t know- I can only day what we would do with people. Sorry I am not more helpful. I am sending good vibes your way and wishing for a full recovery for Bogie!
Thanks Irina – that is very helpful. I don’t think she is convinced of anything at this point. He has a recheck on Wednesday. I did ask her if it could possibly be cancer and she said it’s possible at his age but she didn’t want to make a definitive diagnosis. I think she wants to see if there are any changes from the last appointment. Thank you for the vibes and good wishes.
(((Vibes for Sarita and Bogie)))
Perhaps a biopsy if the mass can be taken (simulate to aspirating fluid) and sent for pathology- to determine what kind of cells are present. It could give you a definitive answer. Wishing comfort for both of you. Will be waiting for updates. ?
Just an update on Bogie.
He’s having good days and bad days. Went for recheck on Wednesday and the vet noticed he was breathing heavy – I had noticed him making some rattling sounds when breathing like snoring but didn’t think too much of it. She took a few x-rays and sent it to a radiologist. She thought either heart or lung problems but even the radiologist could not conclude but thought probably not heart.
The mass is the same in size.
All we are going to do at this point is try some new antibiotics and give him metacam and continue with ear drops and eye ointment.
I think it will just be a day to day thing. Some days just seem better than others for him.
{{{Bogie}}}. (((Sarita))).
Sorry I missed this update.
Sending (((((((vibes)))))))) for both of you. xx
Thank you.
He is hanging in there. I’ve been trying to clean his crusty runny eye and know it hurts him but I’m hoping I can totally clean away that crusty fur – it’s just taking time as he is so sensitive – well, it’s red and it does hurt.
I do have to wonder if the eye problem is due to tooth roots…have to see what the vet thinks – maybe that is also causing the heavier breathing.
Abscess/tumor thing – seems bigger.
oh, things just keep getting worse it seems. poor bogie!
((((((healing vibes))))))))
Just an update on Mr. Bogie.
His breathing seems better although he does still make noises when he is sleeping but the vet was pleased his breathing was better.
His left eye – still watering – I am now doing a different eye drop instead of eye ointment. We’ll see if that clears it up – if not then we’ll do some x-rays and eye flushing and see if that helps.
His left ear – it was still gooey so the vet cleaned it and then gave me an ear drop cocktail she mixed up.
His abscess/lump seems bigger but the vet said it cannot be totally removed as there is too much tissue/veins involved – she could remove a portion of it and make it smaller but that doesn’t make sense to put him through that if it doesn’t completely eliminate the problem and it continues to grow.
Overall he seems like he has more good days than bad days so we continue on.
(((( Hugs and More Well Wishes for Bogie)))))
I’m glad he is being a little fighter.
What a fighter Bogie is!
I’m glad to hear a few issues are doing better.
What kind of drops are you using for his eyes, Sarita? Is it just a dry eye problem he has? Because Mimzy has a lot of that hard gunk in the corner of his eyes and the vet ophthalmologist told us to use Genteal blue label/mild to moderate drops and a saline solution to wash the eye with. He still gets a bit of crusty stuff even with these, so I’m still searching for a good eyedrop for him. I have to say this one has made a big difference for him though.
I agree. He must be a strong boy.
You must be relieved to see those good days!
Continued {{{Vibes}}}
Thank you everyone for the continued vibes.
MM – it’s for a runny eye – it’s Oflaxacin Opthamolic Solution.
Bogie’s eyes and ears seem to be clearing – we are going to continue eye and ear drops for 7 more days.
She measured the abscess/lump this time and in a month she will take a look at it again – it’s not shrinking for sure but she want’s to see if it increases.
He seems in good spirits and does his bunny shivers!
Dexamethasone is a steroid (or at least it is in humans, we prescribe it where i work!) so that should get his ears working again and healing! x
I’m glad to hear Bogie is doing better.
Bunny shivers? Is that like the bunny butt twitch? ![]()
Glad to hear there is improvement. Hope he keeps improving so he can have a Hoppy Holiday!

I feel like I may be having to make that decision for Bogie very soon and it makes me sad. His tumor is getting bigger and I can really feel the heat from it when I touch it and I know that is not a good sign and he must be suffering – its right by his neck/head/ear area and it just has to be painful. I just have to think if that was me, I wouldn’t want to be in pain any longer.
I know when he’s gone Bobby will miss him – they aren’t bonded but I know they keep each other company.
We go back a week from Monday (unless of course he takes a big turn for the worse) and Dr. Tate and I will have the discussion…I would much rather let him go sooner rather than later to ease any suffering.
been there and it sucks, im sorry
I know you’ve had to make this choice a couple other times recently.
It just sucks. You and Bogie are in my thoughts.
I am sorry to hear Bogie isn’t doing well. I know it must be difficult to go threw this. Its never easy to let go.
Keeping you and Bogie in my thoughts…
You have done so well by him Sarita, I know it will be a sad day if you have to make that decision, but he has known great love thanks to you. ((((((Hugs))))))
Thinking of you and Bogie and hoping for more comfy and happy times for you both together yet.
I’m so sorry to hear that Bogie is not doing well. He’s so lucky to have a person that cares about him so much. Will be thinking about you both. (((hugs))))
So an update on Mr. Bogie – he’s still hanging in there and we are basically in just maintenance mode here. He got more meds and his eyes were running again. He is snoring very loudly – he is upstairs and we can hear him in the kitchen. His abscess is getting much larger though and he is still eating but he is slowing down eating recently too.
Aaaaaw sarita! So sorry! Thinking of the little mister and wishing for a painfree remainder of his life!
I am sorry he isn’t doing better. Your in my thoughts and I also am wishing him to have a pain free remainder of his life.
I’m sorry Sarita.
I’m so sorry Sarita. You and he will be in my thoughts. Sending some (((Hugs)))) to you both.
What happened?
Yeah, any changes?
{{{Bogie}}}
Thinking about him and wondering how you and he are doing Sarita.
Sending virtual (((hugs))) your way.
Thanks everyone – my little old man is still hanging in there. We are pretty much in maintenance mode at this point. His appetite is good and he seems to be maintaining weight.
Sending lots of (((((Love and Hugs)))) to Bogie!!!!
Sending {{{Vibes}}} for Bogie!!
Always have some (((((((vibes))))))) in my pocket for Bogie. ![]()
Aw, he’s a fighter! Continued feel better Vibes!
Poor Bogie! At least he is maintaining his weight! That’s a blessing! I’ve had to use Tresaderm a few times before and it’s been successful for me. I hope you have better luck! It’s one of the worst feelings when our fur babies are sick![]()
