My bunny has only been with me for two weeks, and he has started to get an attitude. He was born in June, and is not neutered. He was very sweet at first and cuddly when I first got him. Now, he will still cuddle and give me kisses, but out of nowhere he will bite my ear or my neck. I was petting him for a long time yesterday, then he climbed up my chest sniffing…thinking he was going to give me kisses, I stayed still. He sniffed up to my neck and then bit it, twice, hard.

I jump every time he does this and say “ow” in a deep voice (my initial reaction), and he usually jumps out of fear. Then a few minutes later he will do the same thing. Why is he nipping me out of nowhere like that? I have two marks on my neck now that look like a hicky….great.

This is my first time ever owning a bunny, and I am trying my hardest to understand them and their actions. Help me think like a bunny so I can bond with my little guy!

It sounds like he is hitting puberty. Nipping is not unusual. When he does it, try squealing in a high pitched voice. It will sound to him like a bunny screaming, which tells him he is hurting you. Most bunnies get the hint, but it is probably time to get him neutered so having that done would probably help more.

Agreed-definitely puberty, sounds like love bites (because a real bite and you’d be yelling ouch for sure!) When is he getting the ‘big snip’? If it’s sooner, that’s better, he’ll be less likely to keep nipping after.
