One of my new rabbits has the most beautiful blue eyes and I would love to be able to get pictures of his eyes, but the color isn’t showing up well on camera. Does anyone who owns/owned a blue eyed rabbit have any tips for taking cute pics of their rabbit where the blue eyes are showing? Is it just camera quality or is there really a trick or capturing the blue eyes?

It’s lighting and camera quality. You can’t really use a flash if you’re trying to capture their eye color. And you want the light to bounce from something onto the subject rather than directly onto the subject (which is why photographers use those white umbrella looking stands).

Hmm, the blue in Wooly’s eyes shows up just fine. I just have a lot of trouble with red eye. I try to get him in natural light and without a flash.

Ok, thanks I’ll try different lighting tomorrow and see if that helps. Thanks for the tips!

I had a lot of success using macro with flash for my new blue-eyed boy.

Here is an article that gives examples of different types of lighting specifically on photographing the eyes. Might help you to capture your blue’s eyes with that sparkling, clear color. Obviously a little difficult with a moving subject, but gives you the general idea for the best environment to capture the eyes.

Stickerbunny – Yep, that’s why I’m always having to kick people out that come to take pictures around 5:00 (the same time we close where I work). The low natural light photographs better.

The lighting is definitely important. I have hundreds of pictures of Alvin, but only a handful of photos actually show the deep blue in his eyes, even though I try specifically to get it to show up. The position and angle of his head and body are important as well, if his eyes are in even the tiniest bit of shadow, the blue won’t show up, or if the reflection/glow in the eyes is captured then all I see is eye shine in the photo. I have lots of photos of him with glowing eyes!

Thanks so much for all the tips!
Ava- Is there a particular lighting or angle that you have found works best? Like in front of him, standing up, on his level, etc?

My rabbit Usagi has blue eyes and they don’t show well in photos unless they are taken from the side or up close. If its from a distance you can’t tell what his eye color is.This is just from my experience. In my welcome topic I posted a couple of days ago. one was of him close up eating lettuce and his eye color showed really well the other picture of him was at a further distance and you couldn’t see his eye color that well. I also get a lot of red eye that my darn camera doesn’t seem to get rid of. hehe Best of luck with your photos. =)
