When I was at work Faxon (my dog) pulled the top gate between her room and the rabbit room down, jumped bottom gate into the rabbit room and then the gate between the rabbit room and the living room into the rest of the house. This is the third time she's done this (I THINK i've finally fixed the issue) since I got Mako. Luckily she has zero prey drive and doesn't mind Mako. The other two times Mako seemed fine when I came home but this time she definitely seemed on edge and didn't come right up to me. There was also bedding all over the floor where it looked like she may have run through her litter box at high speed (in fear/startled?). So my question is: Just now, she started running wildly around the room. I wasn't sure if she was playing or scared but she definitely seemed scared. Do you think she's still shaken up from the dog?

edit: Ugh yeah I can tell that she's pretty upset, she's hiding under the table where usually she's just sprawled out in the middle of the room…

Is there a way you can close the door instead of using baby gates? Even the most secure gate can be yanked down by a determined dog. Even with no prey drive, the bun is obviously scared and running scared like that can cause them to injure themselves – even if the dog is just trying to play, or sniff the bun, just the running could break a leg or even her back. And with you not there potentially for hours, any injury could be fatal if it happens (or the injured prey animal could trigger the dormant prey drive in your dog).

She should calm down in a day or two, buns hold their freak outs for a while. Craisins help mine.

I don't have a door there, hence the problem. I'm thinking I might need to get a crate now. The baby gates worked for months so I'm not sure what changed, but I think I secured it better this time. If not I'll start putting her in the bathroom until I figure out how to fit a crate her size into my already crowded house. It's weird Mako got so freaked out this time–this is the third time she's escaped and Mako cuddles up to Faxon on the bed almost nightly while we watch movies together and she generally has no fear of Faxon then either. I'm wondering if the crash is what did it–the last two times Faxon squeezed thru a gap between the two gates, thus less noise etc. than this time where she actually tore one down. The issue was a "bumper" i had put up to try to secure the gate better which obviously backfired so maybe now they'll be good.

You never know what can startle a bunny. Rufus is so ridiculously self assured 99.9% of the time, I thought he was completely unflappable. But twice I’ve seen him get a fright and he went rigid and thumped and then was shaken. I have no idea what happened! Once was outside in his (covered) x-pen and once was inside running around the living room. I’m guessing it was a noise or something I couldn’t even hear. He came good again within an hour with a lot of cuddles and Craisins.

I hope Mako is ok and goes back to normal quickly!

I decided to go ahead and try putting Faxon in the bathroom and it worked and I didn’t have to spend the whole work day worrying about Mako
