About a month ago I adopted a 6 month old nuetered male rex. As of so far, he has been for the most part very well behaved, aside from some mild digging in the corners and the occasional misplaced dropping for the first few days after we got him. However, my wife and I got her a new desk a few days ago, which he has decided is a great place to drop a ton of pellets. I've tried spraying the area down with a scent he doesn't like (first vinegar and then garlic) and returning his pellets to his litterbox, but he insists that that area is his. What can I do to convince him that he needs to be dropping his pellets in his litter box?

He’s just upset by the new smells, the spot no longer smells like home, so he’s fixing it. Only thing that works for mine is to block the area for a while until they lose interest.

That makes a lot of sense, actually. Unfortunately I don’t have the option of just blocking the space off, as we live in a rather small apartment and her ‘office’ is really just a part of the living room. However, there are a couple of smells we like to scent our house with: namely sage, vanilla and nog champa (incense). I just finished spraying the desk down with ‘the smells of home’, which hopefully should get him to calm down about the new smells. If this continues for too much longer I’ll start looking into ways of keeping him out of the area, which will be difficult as I don’t want to have to confine him but also can’t watch him with complete attention all the time.

Would it be possible to temporarily block the desk off with baby gates or NIC cubes? I just throw up a baby gate barrier usually for a few weeks and then the area loses whatever smell was bothering them and I can unblock it. Might be a bit annoying to have the desk “caged” for a bit, but better than having it be a litter box anyway. The more he marks, the harder it’s going to be to get the smell out (to his nose) to avoid remarking.

Another thing that helps with mine is I clean the spot with pure vinegar, not 50/50 vinegar/water. If I use the 50/50 mix it doesn’t take the smell away enough for them and they remark it.
