Happy Friday Everyone! I am just waiting out the last couple minutes of work and I can’t waitttt to get home to play with Simba. He has his first vet appointment scheduled tomorrow for a general check-up and nail trim!! I don’t live close to any of the HRS recommended rabbit vets, but this one was recommended by a local bunny forum I’m on that’s just 10 minutes away so I hope he’s rabbit-savvy as claimed! I’m sooo nervous about how it’ll go and how Simba will react to it… but I’m so excited to find out and make sure he’s in good health and comfy with trimmed nails!!

I hope he does well – my vet isn’t listed on the HRS website either. And she is WONDERFUL. If you don’t end up liking the way he/she handles Simba or anything like that… or if they seem to tell you things you’re not too sure about, you can check on here and just find another in the area if this one doesn’t satisfy you.

He will probably not be very happy with this adventure! The first time all my buns went they clinged to me like their lives depended on it so it was extremely cute and adorable – although they were stressed about it.

How did Simba’s vet visit go?

Thanks! I think it went well! The vet had a vet tech in the room to hold onto him while he checked Simba’s weight, eyes, ears, teeth and temperature. Simba was definitely scared but fortunately stayed incredibly still from being scared instead of running bezerk. =P He also checked with me Simba’s diet and any concerns I had and provided me with a care sheet from Oxbow as a recommended brand for pellets and hay. (Also confirmed he is DEFINITELY a boy lol) The only thing I found odd was that he said fresh veggies should be considered treats which falls into 5% of his diet (I told him he’s currently having yu choy, basil and arugula). I know it wouldn’t be as much as the hay that would occupy most of his diet, but I didn’t think fresh veggies would be in the treat category.

Simba’s funny though, I’ve learned that this bunny is either easily amused or just curious about EVERYTHING. He went from scared in the carrier during the car ride, to wanting to check out the scene when we were waiting, then just excited for his treat when I brought him back to his cage when we got home and did crazy binkies when I let him out in his play area. =D

My vet is an exotics vet, but he’s not specialized with rabbits. I was originally hoping he could tell me Simba’s breed. So from this visit, I know he is 3.7 lbs at a week away from being 5 months old. Anyone want to take a shot at what type of lop Simba is?? Hehe

You know… contrary to what I always hear my vet doesn’t say they’re treats but she says veggies are not necessary since the Oxbow pellets provide all the vitamins and nutrients they NEED. I however choose to give them about 1 – 1 /2 cups a days each of veggies. She is very much an exotics and very knowledgeable rabbit vet despite not being listed on the website… so I don’t think your vet is far-fetched in saying that. I wonder if he just meant that it’s not necessary.

Personally, I told her I prefer to give them because I want them to experience and have the different textures/tastes/smells of different vegetables. But I mean she is right…except for getting extra water from the veggies – they are already provided in their normal pellet intake every day.
