› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › UPDATE: Jo-Jo not eating, tooth grinding…
Well, it’s only been 48 hrs since she was spayed, so I guess I shouldn’t expect too much, but she has not eaten anything of substance yet. (She ate, literally, ONE piece of hay and half a banana slice since coming home.
. Drinking water, pooping & peeing. Moving quite a bit better – a slow, cautious hop. But really worried about the no solid food thing. Hubby checked her incision and said it looked great, then, while he gently held her, I forced some Critical Care into her mouth. This royally pissed her off and she started to struggle, so hubby (the veterinarian) said to stop so she didn’t hurt herself. She hopped away (slowly, poor baby) and is hiding behind a chair – grinding her teeth! She has never done that before.
. I think I’m gonna lay off the force feed for now… Hasn’t had pain meds today – was hoping maybe once the meds clear her system she’ll feel more like eating.
Thoughts? Advice?
She needs some more pain meds. You want to keep her out of pain (or in very minimal pain) so she will eat.
I agree with Beka. She won’t eat if she’s in pain.
(((Jo-Jo Feel better Soon Bunny))))
You guys are the best! Thanks for the speedy replies! I was able to catch hubby before he left for work and he gave her her pain med injection.
I really appreciate the care and kindness you all show for everyone’s buns! (Did that sound weird?) thanks a lot! Will keep you posted.
Continued vibes to Jo-Jo. Hopefully the pain injection will help. If it continues you may want to see if your husband can also do some sub-q’s tonight as well.
Still not eating, not moving around… When I offer her food (and I’ve tried everything) she turns her back to me.
. Hubby is bringing sub-q fluids home. Should I try and force Critical Care? Don’t want her to hurt herself.
I think trying some critical care is a good idea.
I have sometimes waved greens in front of their nose too to kind of irritate them and get them to snap at the food and hopefully eat it. Try breaking some cilantro or parsley to get the aroma going and wave in front of her face. Also try kale that seems to be pretty successful too in getting my rabbits to eat.
Will do…
Grrrrrrr…. Nothing.
On Dana Krempels (PhD in Biology, general rabbit expert) site there’s an article about GI Stasis she mentions appetite stimulants. I’m wondering if this is something you could discuss or have your husband discuss with his partner?
E. Appetite stimulants.
B-complex vitamins, administered orally or injected, or Periactin (cyproheptadine) can be used to stimulate appetite. The former not only help stimulate appetite, but might also help supply what the bunny is missing by not producing or eating his cecotropes. Periactin is available in 4 mg tablets or a 1 mg/ml liquid suspension. An average-sized (4 – 6 lbs.) rabbit can be given 1mg by mouth, twice per day. It is vital to keep the bunny eating, even if you must force-feed. Anorexia can rapidly result in gastric ulcers and serious liver degeneration.

I really don’t know anything about this other than what’s in the article but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to mention it.
(( Vibes for JoJo))
Thanks! I’ll look into it.
Managed to get about 3 tsp’s of Critical Care into her… By myself, and she’s a flemmie, so it was a wrestling match. Hubby is bringing home a boatload of stuff – Baytril, Metacam (what is the dose for a 12 lb bun? He wasn’t sure), B-12 etc. hope she hangs on that long… She looks terrible!
UPDATE: No change… Very weak. Ears are cold. Been forcing Critical Care, Sub-q fluids, giving Metacam, Baytril & Reglan… She doesn’t fight anything, just sits in a loose meatloaf, grinding her teeth. Drinking & peeing but not eating or pooping. So sad. Keeping her warm. ![]()
Poor Jo-Jo. I really hope she feels better soon. Make sure you look after yourself as well as her!
Thanks, Rufus. <3
OK, Worth a try as it can’t hurt and might help…. What do you know about reiki… I have used it on my cats but never needed to use it on my buns yet…. Reiki is a therapeutic massage where you don’t actually make contact but use the energy fields of your body. Take some deep breaths and find a calm place, rub your hands together quickly till the palms are warm then place them over your bun leaving about an inch space between your hands and Jojo…. The idea is to draw away the bad energy and replace it with your positive charged energy (sorry this sounds a bit kitch but I am trying to frame it in layman’s terms as I don’t think we have tie to go through the whole training process). A lot of it is instinctive, you will be able to sense warm and cool patches over Jojo’s body the extremes are the points to focus on….
Have been massaging and trying to kinda focus my energy and pass it to her to help her heal… Can’t hurt!
Awww i’m sorry. I know how stressful that is. Hopefully some of the stuff your husband brought home will make her feel better soon so she will start eating. Just try lots of different veggies, even ones she normally doesn’t care for. I remember with my little girl, she wanted nothing to do with her favorite veggies after her spay (bok choi, kale, carrots – she wouldn’t even look at them). The first thing she ate was broccoli (after I annoyed her into taking a bite) and for about 3 days straight the only thing she would touch was spinach.
Maybe you could check with your husband about giving her a higher dose of pain meds? I know for me that was the biggest hurdle to get over before Min would eat again.
vibes for poor Jo-Jo…
Keep moving your hands over her body… When you sense a patch that feels like it is too warm or too cool place your hands together one over the other and work them over the area in a circular motion. Focus on warming the cool and cooling the hot… Focus all your love to that area and imaginge a pink cloud of healing and love surrounding her.
Ohh, this is such a stressful situation and it should have gone so smoothly.
((Get well soon JoJo))
And try not to worry too much Cheri!
Thank you all. Jo just seems to want to snuggle – and I have NO problem with that! <3
Sorry to hear about your poorly bun Cheri, it sounds like you are doing all the right things. These bunnies can be worrying little critters, but things will be ok. Sending warm cuddly thoughts to you both xx
Big {{{VIBES}}} for big Jo-Jo!
Could she have developed some post surgery adhesions? It can happen fairly quickly i had read. I’m not sure how they’d be able to check…
Keeping her warm and managing pain is good. I hope you start up see an improvement soon. Between you and your hubby she is in good hands.
Thanks for the vibes! We snuggled for over 2 hrs and then we gave her more Critical Care and put her back in her cage hoping she’ll feel the need to use the litterbox but nothing… Gonna add simethicone… See if that helps… Dosage, anyone?
Awww… Sorry to hear she’s not feeling better today!
B. Simethicone
(liquid, pediatric suspension or tablets) is essential for the relief of gas pain which usually accompanies ileus. For relief of acute gas pain, 1-2 cc (20mg/ml suspension) can be given as often as every hour for three doses, then 1 cc every three to eight hours. This substance has no known drug interactions, is not absorbed through the intestinal lining and acts only on a mechanical principle: it changes the surface tension of the frothy gas bubbles in the gut, joining them into larger, easier-to-pass bubbles. Simethicone is practically inert, and is safe to give, even as a precaution, as long as it is not given long term. (Note: liquid suspensions of simethicone are relatively expensive. Less expensive versions, such as 125mg gel capsules are equally effective. A bunny can safely receive the contents of half a capsule at the rate described above.)

I am going to lock this thread. There is a new thread in the Rainbow Bridge section. Please refer to this link to further support Cheri:
