If you want to post links to the ferret cages you’re considering we could give you opinions on them. Generally I think a NIC would be cheaper and provide larger space than most commercially sold cages around.

Edit: I forgot about the hocks question. Vinyl flooring should be fine it’s a pretty popular flooring option for NIC’s. 

 Here’s our bunny condo.  They are NEVER locked in there….but if I were to lock them in, I would make the condo 3 NIC grids wide vs. 2 and add another grid to the height.  We just use it to store their grain – and it’s a favorite nap spot for one of our buns.  The top level, we actually used Xpen grids…and the front Xpen grid door swings open, for easy cleaning and access.

I put “finish” in quotes b/c It has gone through plenty of alterations since then. Most of them were minor, like changing out the cardboard on the ramps for carpet. The big change was when we added Porky’s “front porch” area.

These photos aren’t great since most were taken by my 7yo son, and none were meant to document the porch area.

As you can see in this photo, a small human can lay down in the porch area and hold his foot up in the air. I’m not really sure why he did this, but he can.

The porch has worked really well for Porky, b/c he can have exercise time on his schedule instead of ours. Before he often hung out in his condo when I had it open for him during the day, but then want out at night when I wanted to go to bed. He can now binky about in the middle of the night to his hearts content.

We needed to have him for awhile before we could do it though. There are some bunnies who are high enough hoppers that they would escape. It also works b/c Porky is completely litter trained (any occasional poops you see are from him scattering them as he hops in and out of his litter box.)

Ferret condos are generally a bad idea – ferrets are made different and have different needs – I find the condos too narrow and too steep for rabbits.

I had ordered a rabbit hutch off petsmart.com for $165.00 for my bunny and he loves it. It was meant to be an outdoor cage but that didn't happen. It is now in my room. I keep the cage door open and Ralphie gets to roam my room during the day (whether I'm home or not). I have a baby gate blocking off my door way so he doesn't leave because he tends to go under my parents bed and chew up all mine and my brother's art projects from elementary school and also to let my cats come in and out to play with him. I also have a fence around my bed to keep him from jumping up there – he tends to have accidents which he is potty trained and he doesn't have any accidents anywhere else. I've done research on why he would do that and supposedly it is common because 1) Your bed is comfortable and they want to claim it. and 2) It smells like human and they want it to have their scent.

I hope you get a bunny, they are a great animal to have. Granted Ralphie is my first bunny and I got him in June of 2013, but he is such a good boy and is really fun to have around.
