        Hi everyone,

I’m new to binkybunny as a member (coming over from RO, but I like the no breeders thing going here) but I read often. Having a bit of a problem I need help with.

It rained hard the other night for the first time in a while in Texas. All of the sudden this morning, my partner woke me at 6:30 when she was going to work to tell me that there were ants all over the living room carpet.

Q-tip is a free-roaming bunny. We have a one bedroom 700 sq ft place that she has free hop. She avoids the kitchen and bathroom floors because she hates sliding on them, but that gives her living room, bedroom, and huge walk in closet that are bunnyproofed and hers for the hopping.

Thus, the ant dilemma. They’re in the living room carpet, not in the kitchen or somewhere that the bunny doesn’t go. Anything I put down has to be able to be ingested, sniffed, and hopped on by a very curious little mini-rex.

So far, I’ve been spraying with ACV to no avail. I finally put a trail of lemon juice between the living room and bedroom, hoping it would keep them out of the bedroom.

What else can I do that will be safe for Q-tip but effective on ants? Cornstarch? Cinnamon? Lavender essential oil? Do others use other things that could work? I’ve yet to find where they’re coming from; it seems  they’re just popping up from the living room carpet, so I can’t even get them at the nest….

Thanks so much for the help!

          Welcome to BB!

In an older post here about this someone used the the borax/sugar method successfully.

I’ve also heard that you can use corn meal to kill ants. They carry it back to their nest but they can’t digest it. Vinegar is supposed to work as well.

          Best of luck!

But can bunnies eat it? I considered putting down cornmeal, but I was worried that the squishybug would decide it looked like treats and lick it. So far vinegar and vacuuming….

You wouldn’t want her to ingest a large quantity of it but it’s not toxic. Are the ants only in the living room or are they in the bedroom as well?

You can also use dust http://amzn.com/B000BX1KLE

Or, corner off by girds or something, an area and put ant bait in the cornered off area. The ants will take it back home and your bun can’t get to it.

To further exacerbate your problem… it will be at least a few days before there will even BE a nest. All that rain, I’m sure, has flooded out their old one. That’s why you would see them all over and not just a trail, they are looking to set up camp. If you are able to look around the foundation and see where they might be coming up into the house you could put down bait of some sort right in their path. You may even have to look around under the house around the foundation. This way it would be all hands on deck grabbing as much as they can on their way to finding their new home and encourage them to make their nest close to the food source. Unfortunately, I still think you will be stuck with the vacuuming until they figure out where they will call home and everyone gets the memo.

Just buy some TORRO liquid bait traps. They will come out of your carpet to grab it and kill the entire nest worth within a few days. It’s the best ant killer I have seen. We had them HORRIBLE here when we moved in – they broke our A/C unit nesting in it, they took over our mailbox, they were on every flower outside, it was like invasion of the ants. You can easily keep the bait traps away from the bun and the small amount the ants themselves will have on them won’t harm a bun if the bun decides ants are tasty and one wonders into the cage area. If you live in a house not an apartment, you could get the outdoor traps as well, to prevent any more coming in. Within a few days of using that stuff, we went from ants everywhere to no ants to be seen. I just rebait the outside every summer and haven’t seen an ant since.

Just a note on the product miaeih linked. For anyone using something like this, make sure the diatomaceous earth is the food-grade one.
