I got Tinkerbell spayed this morning and picked her up at around 4pm, the vet said she had eaten a bit of the food I had given (but it looked like she had barely touched it). Tinkerbell came home and ran straight under my bed where she usually sleeps and likes to relax, and she has not come out all evening and it is now coming up to midnight. She hasn’t eaten or drank anything, I’ve given her a hot water bottle and a blanket and she is currently snuggling in the blanket and up against the bottle. I’ve been given medication to give to her but I just can’t get her out to give it to her and when I try to do it while she’s still under the bed she turns her face away.

She’s returning to the vet tomorrow for an appointment at 4pm but I’m going to take her at 8am if she does not eat whatsoever by then. I’ve even moved her litter tray and food and water bowl into my room next to my bed so she doesn’t need to go too far to get them. I just want to know if this sort of thing has happened to other (female) bunnies and is there anything I can do now? I feel so bad for putting her through this pain.

I had a bit of difficulty getting my little one to eat the day after her spay. Offer her all her favorite treats (fruit and or vegetables) and maybe a little diluted fruit juice. My girl was quite picky about what she would eat for that first week (she mostly ate spinach) but just try anything that’s safe for her to eat. When they aren’t feeling well they tend to avoid the usual sweet treats so it might surprise you what she goes for in regards to food for a few days. I’ve also read that the more fragrant things like mint or cilantro are good options to wet their appetite. It’s also very important to get her to take her medicine. She doesn’t want to eat because she’s in pain and uncomfortable so taking her medicine will help ease some of that and make her more willing to eat. You could try syringe feeding her some water but I would hold off on that until after you’ve given her the pain meds and given her a chance to eat and drink herself. If she doesn’t come around then definitely take her back to the vet early. Better safe than sorry.

It can usually take a full day for them to start to nibble on fresh greens.

Usually right after they get home, they just want to be left alone so I wouldn’t fuss over her right now. This is not unusual. They give them some heavy duty pain meds and the anesthesia. Just let her be for now.
