while I’ve read on some of these forums that it’s normal for a bunny to spend a lot of time in his litter, is it normal for them to sleep in it too? He seems to not sleep in other places aside from my lap when I’m holding him but he prefers his litter box

. Now while I clean it everyday, leaving just a little droppings and a urine spot, I still feel as though it’s not hygienic for him to be sleeping in there all the time. Is there something that can be done?

Leopold loves to sleep in the litter. I think it’s pretty normal. It’s soft and makes a good “bed”. Does your bun have a fleece blanket they can use?

It’s normal. As long as you’re using a good litter and cleaning regularly it shouldn’t cause too much of an issue.

Here’s my bunny sleeping in his litter box. I use wood stove pellets for litter, cover it with hay, and change it every other day. He doesn’t get dirty, stinky, or stained from snoozing in there.

I use Super Pet critter litter as my vet recommended it until he gets older. It turns the balls into clay when he pees and all but just feel as though he’s getting dirty despite cleaning it daily.
I haven’t thought of using a fleece blanket as it’s kinda warm in my state and figure I don’t want him to overheat?

Baby rabbits don’t need special litter so it won’t hurt anything to switch if you’re not happy with what you’re currently using. Carefresh, wood stove pellets, and yesterdays news are popular. You could put down fleece and see if a comfy alternative entices him. If that doesn’t work there’s not much you can do to discourage him from hanging out in there without running the risk of setting back his litter habits. It really is completely normal and okay.

I would try a comfy alternative. And, like MD said, if that doesn’t work then don’t worry about it. Sleeping in the litter box is not a big deal. Plus you don’t want to somehow discourage his use of it.

I would switch from teh clay. Bunnies, especially babies, like to taste test things, and clay can cause major blockages in their digestive system.

It’s really fine (and a GOOD thing!) if he likes hanging out/sleeping in his litterbox! It’s ONLY a problem if he loves sleeping in there so much that he chooses to not dirty his “bed” with poop and pee. But as long as he’s still using the box and it gets cleaned regularly, no harm…

I agree with Monkeybun, don’t use clumping litter. It can easily cause a blockage.

I tried switching litters and now he just digs away at the litter instead of using it.. Is that normal?

What litter did you switch to?

My rabbit will sleep in his litter box if I don’t put a towel or rug in his crate. As soon as I put a new towel/rug down he will lay on that instead.
