My, or our (why do I always consider them “mine”?) bunnies Nelli and Malla got their new cage setup quite a long time ago. There are pics here in BB in the habitats section – a bunk bed and the cage built under the bed. Anyway, ever since then I had been planning to buy new litter boxes.
In the very beginning when we got the buns and I started litter training them I bought them a cat litter box. They got the hang of it really fast, and used that box nicely. When they reached maturity they had some territorial issues, and one of the buns ended up peeing somewhere next to the litter box as the other wouldn’t leave the box and let her sister use it. So, I got a similar size plastic box, something you can use in household work (compared to the almost 7 euros it was less than 2 euros). It took the bunnies ages to accept the new box.
When we got this new bunk bed cage setup done, I still used those litter boxes. The bunnies were kind of upset about all the changes, so their litter habits were shot to hell… haha. I guess a territory marking contest was going around. Well, now that they seem accustomed to their not-so-new-anymore cage, I thought I’d get them bigger litter boxes, better suited to their huge cage. The old ones were also kind of destroyed with urine. Anyway, I kept putting it off, as I was afraid they wouldn’t use them like they didn’t use the second one for a long time at first.
BUT! Then, during an unplanned household detergent shopping spree (
) I just went and got them the new boxes (plastic square boxes meant for rinsing dishes in), and they use them! And not only do they use them, they seem to prefer them, as there is a lot smaller amout of scattered poop around the cage! I’m so very happy
Plus, there hasn’t been any peeing outside the boxes at all. It’s not the money that bothered me in this case (as the boxes were about 11 euros total), but I didn’t want to start mopping pee off the cage floor and being afraid the buns would get themselves soaked with urine. And, as the boxes are bigger with higher edges, cleaning is even easier!
I’ll try to post a picture later, just wanted to share!
