Yesterday, around 1:00 PM was my first GI stasis scare.
Cosmo was lying down in his hidey house (which is not abnormal), and I put some veggies in his cage and went out for an hour walk, when I came home he still had not eaten his veggies (VERY abnormal). I tried offering him some apple, and he slowly, unexcitedly took a few bites and left the rest (VERY VERY abnormal), he also seemed extremely lethargic, and his eyes were only half open, though he did not seem like he was in pain.
Without waiting to see if he could recover on his own, I took him straight to the vet, who said it seemed like he had very early stages of GI Stasis. His temperature was at the low end of a normal range, and he was a little dehydrated. He spent the night on pain meds, and fluid under the skin, and by 6:00 AM the next day (today) he is back home, with a normal temperature.
He is eating PLENTY of hay on his own, and already has a piece of wet romaine lettuce. He is on small amounts of critical care for 2 days (every 8 hours) and has 2 nights of Metacam Oral (given every 24 hours). He hasn’t had any water yet, but he is pooping, though they are small and dark, they are not rock hard (and I guess some poop is better than none) =)
Needless to say I am very happy with his speedy recovery, and hope I never have to go through a scare again! (Still unsure of the cause though)
