Soooooo…..having a Flemish Giant who can jump over 3 feet in a single bound and grows like a weed presents some interesting (and expensive) challenges for housing. First it was the Super Pet XXL JUMBO GIANT REALLY-FRIKKIN-BIG cage. That lasted 2 weeks. Next was the ginormousest dog crate on the market. Lasted 3 months. Now ~ TA DA! I think I have the solution. We got the 48 inch tall X-pen, built a base, applied peel & stick tiles for flooring, zip tied the pen to the base, built in a step system and added a 2 foot by 4 foot “bunk bed” shelf. I have also ordered the screen top, but I’m hoping I won’t have to use it because being able to just walk right in to her cage to clean and be able to stand up-right (at 5′ 11″) is a blessing. She supervised it’s construction and placement and even hopped inside a few times while I arranged stuff and installed her steps and shelf. She hopped into her litter box but did not pee or poo all day – I think she was holding it for when her “REAL” cage came back! When it was bedtime, I lured her back in with her night time veggies and closed her door. She looked at me like “Um, Mumma? I fink you wocked me in by miftake!” (In my head she has a slight lisp) But I just did our normal routine, locked up, lights off…
About 45 minutes later I snuck down the stairs to peek at her. Dark in the room, a little light from the stairway… No bunny. Whaaaaa??? Came closer, really looked carefully – she had climbed up on the tiniest little spot in the farthest corner under her shelf and meatloafed herself on top of her toy box. Dang. Clearly she’s pissed. Well, she better get used to it. Back up to bed I go. Feel guilty. Come back down an hour later and she’s all spread out on her doggy bed, poops & pee in the litter box!! YAY!!
She was her usual happy to see me this morning, I opened her door and she came out for veggies and seemed no worse for wear! Even went back in a couple of times for water & pellets & poops! AMAZING how adaptable they are when they trust you.
