This morning I awoke to hear an odd “screaming” noise coming from my front yard. I quickly jumped out of bed to investigate and found my neighbor’s car attacking a small (about 4-6 month old) wild bunny. I immedieatly scared away the cat, got a shoe box, and found a towel and put it in the shoe box. The injury was awful. It’s leg bone was literally snapped in half. It was in shock and had blood and holes all over it. I went online and found a local veterinarian’s number. They told me when I got to the clinic, they were probably going to have to euthanize it. They suggested I clean the wounds with hydrogen peroxide and antibiotic ointment until I could take it to the 24-hour clinic. My mother was at work at the time, so I had no way of getting there. I quickly went down to my friend (and neighbor)’s house in hope her mother or sister could drive me up there. Her mother was away at a wedding and her sister was about an hour away. My friend’s family is very animal compassionate, so her sister said she would drive back home as fast as she could. We had no idea what to do. We sat there, making as little noise as possible to avoid it going into further shock. Finally, after an hour and a half, her sister arrived and it was going to take us another hour to get to the nearest 24-hour clinic. To add time on top of that, we had no idea where we were going. We spent about an hour longer than what it was supposed to take to get there because we were literally driving around in circles. We finally arrived at the clinic and the nurse took the box back to the vet. We thanked them, and that was the end of it.
Now you may ask, “Why go through all that trouble for a little rabbit?” Well, I was not going to let it suffer and pass in that box. I’d rather that it go peacefully and humanely. To me, it doesn’t matter what animal it is because we all feel pain.
