so polly has not eatin as much as usual and seems reclussive today. she did eat a little parsley and i think she ate pellets this morning. ive let her out of the cage with the rest of her vegies and a litter box. im going to monitor if need to although its 11:30 here and i have school tomorrow. could this be like a gi stasis? i wont be home till 11:30 tomorrow so i cant do anything like meds or anything until saturday. i can try to rub her belly or something to see if it helps. any suggestions? i definently saw her eat parsley so she has some food and water in her. will she be ok till saturday or what should i do?
Shes definently drinking water.
It could be gas or it could be the beginning of stasis. Do you have any simethecone (baby gas drops)? That can be given with no adverse effects.
If she’s eating something, that’s good. Give her some extra veggies for over night if that is all she seems to want.
Reevaluate her in the morning. Is there someone who could take her to the vet in the morning while you’re at school?

i dont but i could run and get them in the morning at like 6 if thatd work. how would i give them to her? no we are in a big financial issue right now with school and my stepdad being fired. if it had been any other week itd be fine. will gas pass?
If you rub her belly and give simethicone, gas can pass. How does her poop look now? Is there any? Sometimes the droppings become very small like black pepper-corns if there is slow motility of the gut.
Simethicone (liquid) can be given from the bottle if it has like a spout, you should only give a few drops. Insert the tip of the bottle behind her front teeth. If you have a syringe, that would probably be easier. They tend to hate simethicone but don’t let that stop you. Some bunnies will eat f ex a piece of papaya or other treat with simethicone on it, but if Polly has lost her appetite perhaps she’ll refuse it.
Please read this if you haven’t already, and follow the advice given: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html
And best of luck, please keep us updated!
OK I’m going to run and get in a min. She didn’t eat her veggies but she has pooped and they are small but I figure its better than no poop.
How is she this morning? I fell asleep shortly after I posted this, so I didn’t see your update.
I’m sorry to hear you guys are in a tough spot right now… I assume that getting a third rabbit has been put on hold. You wouldn’t want to end up stretching yourself further.
Yea we won’t be getting a third one till we get stable in a week or two. She is pooping but they are small or mushy. She’s gotten 3 doses of 20ml or the baby gas stuff every hour should I continue?
Has she eaten anything yet this morning? Is she still drinking?
Did you read the article Bam posted last night? You can give the gas drops safely (they can’t overdose on them). Follow those instructions.
The article also talks about how to give a tummy massage.
Beyond that, if she hasn’t been eating for close to 24 hours, we have to urge you to take her to the vet. Sometimes doing a couple home remedies can help, but if it’s progressed too far, gut motility meds and fluids are going to be necessary.
Today is Friday. Going to your regular vet today during business hours will be MUCH less expensive than if you have to seek out an ER vet overnight or during the weekend.
She hasn’t ate but has drank. I’ll see if my mom can do a tummy massage I won’t be home till 12 tonight
12 tonight! Ok, I misunderstood, I thought you meant that you’d be back at about noon.
Yea. But she’s still pooping which means she must be eating hay.
Should I feed pellets or anything?
I would give her everything you have. Refill the hay, give fresh veggies, and measure out a small amount of pellets.
OK thanks! I’ll see if she will eat the pellets.
What about baby carrot food.
If it’s just mashed boiled carrot, no flour etc in it, I think it would be fine. She needs to eat, does she like to eat carrot babyfood, then at least that’s sth. Since shes pooping still it doesn’t seem like a total blockage. The gut is stimulated by food-intake.
She ate more vegies last night and drank most of her water last night.
How do I help her get to pooping normal? Now that she’s eating and drinking. I was thinking papaya pellets?
Try to get her to eat more hay or green veggies. Papaya pellets have very little of the active enzymes. Also get her moving and try to get her to drink more.
Shes moving about as much as normal. She’s lazy. So give her more veggies? I don’t really know how to make her eat hay.
Try to make the hay more interesting. Stuff grass balls or paper bags with hay, have some in her litter box, and once she’s feeling better, work towards decreasing her pellets (unless she’s already on a minimal amount), so she will need to eat more hay. Have multiple kinds that you can offer to peak her interest: timothy, orchard, brome, meadow, oat, etc…
I pucked up some timothy and put that in there I’ll fill some boxes and stuff with hay. Before this happened I gave them less pellets than usual u gave them half a cup and they usually got 1/2 cup each.
Could she have been eating sth she shouldn’t have? When I first tried to cut down on pellets for my then fat bunny Bam, he filled up on rag-rug fabric instead of as I intended, hay. That gave him the same symtoms your Polly is having.
If she wont eat hay you should give her lots aof leafy greens. It has fiber and the most important thing now is for her to start eating and moving about like she should. I had to search a long time before I found a hay that my bunny liked. In the meantime, I gave him twigs and leaves from trees and herbs and dandelions greens etc, all bunny-appropriate of course. Leaves like apple, hazel, willow are good, they have good fibres.
She really never ate pellets that much. She always had left overs when she was alone. I’m assuming peetas finishing hers off now.her activity is pretty much normal even the rescue said she was a lazy bunny. I’m going to make sure they eat hay and monitor it more closely. I’ll mix hay with their pellets and put more toys with hay in it. Her poop is returning to normal. When should I be able to put her back in? There’s still a small amount of abnormal ones but that could be from earlier last night. I’m assuming her litter habits will come back when she’s better? She’s peeing in the litter box but poop is everywhere.
