Bella and Lionel both developed sneezing and nose discharge around a week ago. We took them straight to the vet, who diagnosed them both with a mild case of pasturella. Both my bunnies are very sensitive, so the vet said since it was so minor, he would not prescribe anything and see if it would clear up on its own, with the instructions to come back if either bun showed any lethargy, grumpiness, less interest in food. It looks like it has almost all cleared up, but they still sneeze 2-3 times a day. So here’s my question… Do I go back and get some baytril and take the risk that it won’t be tolerated well, or wait a bit longer? Both bunnies eat and poop well, have lots of energy, etc.

I also just want to say thanks to everyone for being patient with me while I try to figure out how to use this forum.

Did the vet do a culture and sensitivity test to determine that pasturella was the cause?

Also there are other medications that your vet can prescribe other than baytril.

If it isn’t improving on its own, then it would be a good idea to do what Sarita suggested. Sometimes things seem like they are getting better only to suddenly take a turn for the worse.

Yes he did do a culture and sensitivity test. I will call the vet tommarow and ask about getting the Meds. What other Meds can be used and what do you think is the best for a VERY sensitive bun????

I would ask him what other meds came back from the culture that are rabbit safe. Baytril is very safe for rabbits though – what kinds of problems did you have with this med?

I’m not entirely sure I know what you mean by saying they are “very sensitive” bunnies. Have they had adverse reactions to Baytril in the past? Or do meds in general seem to make them sick? I know some bunnies may not react very well to meds (there may be diarrhea or looser poop and a general indifference to food), but since the treatment is only short-term, usually the benefits outweigh the risks. Not treating an infection will cause more damage long-term.

Bella has bad reactions to most Meds she’s ever taken (diarrhea, less interest in food, less active). I called the vet this morning, but he was in a surgery, so I will call back this afternoon. I hope I can get something that would work for my bunnies, I don’t like seeing them sick.

Let us know what the vet says. Hopefully you can find a medication that will have less side effects.

Just talked to the vet. He said we will try ciprofloxacin, as its like baytril, but not quite. Going to take the bunnies in and get a recheck, I will talk to the vet more then.

Oh good! Hopefully that agrees with them and helps them feel better. :o)

get a probiotic too, that helps keep the good bacteria in their system, so their digestion doesn’t get messed up.
