Our house bunny has crusty sores in the corner of his mouth. We noticed this about a month ago and brought him to the bunny vet. She does not seem to think it is syphillusand honestly has never seen it before. She gave him a shot of antibiotics and that has not cleared it up. I find other people on the internetwith the same question but no answers……   He is our only bunny, is indoor only and unless there is a change in the batch of hay we have not changed his diet….  Can anyone please help us out?

I know someone posted something similar not that long ago… (Earlier this year) I will see if I can find it for you.

OK… There are quite a few. Go to the top of the forums page. On the right you will see three options in orange Forum Preferences, Search and members… Click on Search and type in Mouth or sores. Hopefully one of the others that have been through this will respond shortly.

                Anniecan,
It looks like you double posted the same question, so I am leaving this one here and will delete the post in Diet & Care.
I’m also thinking that you might check out the posts to find exotics vets in your area and possibly try a second opinion. I don’t think, if a vet is stumped, that many of us will be able to assist in a diagnosis here. Try to find another vet that may have come across this condition.

I don’t think one single dosage of antibiotics is going to clear this up – I recommend you either go for a second opinion or take him back for a recheck to the original vet with your concerns for further diagnostic testing. I also recommend the vet do a dental check – perhaps he has some dental problems.

                    Any new chew toys recently?

Does he bite at anything (like pen or cage bars) that might cause irritation?

What antibiotic did the vet treat with?

He chews on his cardboard box but does not bite on cage… and no new chew toys… but a new water bottle.. same
material and I did wash before use but I can’t recall if the timing was that close as to when we switched that and when we noticed
the sores. I honestly don’t remember the antibiotic.. it was in injection….Thanks for all your input.

So frustrating because all the posts regarding this all sound the same.. the vet is stumped and the sores come and go and syphilis and fungal tests are negative. I guess we will be returning to the vet with another stack of cash and a prayer….

It’s really hard to say online, which is why I thought a second vet might help.
If you think it could be related to the water bottle, you could try a crock (or heavy dish) of water instead and see if he likes that better and keeps dry more.
Sarita’s probably right – that one dose wasn’t enough to eradicate it completely.

I definitely don’t understand why your vet only gave one dose of antibiotic….why bother. I think you need to get your vet to take a more aggressive approach – many times that is what you have to do.

Yes, regarding syphilis, it requires 4-6 doses of injected penG.

PenG would treat a range if things even if its not syph. If your vet thinks it wise, you could try a course of it. You can give the rest of the shots at home yourself so you don’t have to keep going back into the vets. It’s not as low risk antibiotic like baytril but its used more and more in rabbits (injected only).

So frustrating because all the posts regarding this all sound the same.. the vet is stumped and the sores come and go and syphilis and fungal tests are negative. I guess we will be returning to the vet with another stack of cash and a prayer….

I don’t know which threads you read but you probably came across some by bunnytowne about her rabbit Cotton. The conclusion was a new vet finally did treat with penG and the problem cleared up.

We cannot presume it is rabbit syphills but it shouldn’t be dismissed either. This quote is from the article I’ve linked below. You may have already seen it in your research.

Over the last years, an atypical form of treponematosis has been observed in rabbits, in which clinical signs are seen only on the face and not on the genitals/anus. The affected area will exhibit lesions that will develop into crusts and, if left untreated, will spread. The lesions may become raw, inflamed, or may bleed or exude a discharge.

The full article in case you or your vet would like to read it.

Update.. after confirming on her own veterinary forum, our doctor is taking the advice given and trying the three Pen G shots- a week apart. Wish us luck!

That still seems pretty conservative to me but I hope that works!

That’s great! Keeping my fingers crossed for you Bun.

If your rabbit is handling the antibiotic well, doing some extra should really knock the infection out.

It is cleared up!! One final shot on Friday and hopefully it does not return.. He is acting much more himself… throwing his dish around when he wants a treat… more binkys and I am so thankful for everyone’s good thoughts and the fact that the vet was willing to try this approach…… God Bless the Bunnies and those who love them!
