I can’t believe it’s already August! It’s scary how quickly time is flying by! So Brevin is starting to feel a lot better now. Can’t wait for his vet check tomorrow morning though to make sure he is healthy and ok. They aren’t going to be happy with the fecal ill be bringing tomorrow :p lol

LBJ I’m glad that the eagle is better! I was wondering how she was doing. Did you guys figure out what had caused her oddness? I love finding turtles! We find turtles over by where we live all the time. They seem drawn to streets and we always watch for them to make sure that they don’t get ran over. If the turtle is what you guys think it is what would you have needed to do with it? Do you bring it to a wildlife specialist?

The bf and I dragged the buns to the vet yesterday. They all got medis and pedis and let me tell you! They were not happy campers. I got the bunny butt from all of them. I was so surprised with how Tohka reacted! He flipped out so bad. I was right he has a little bit of an URI. So they gave us antibiotics with sulfa in it to give to him. Oh boy. He pitched SUCH a fit this morning when we tried to give it to him. He’s so tiny I don’t know how to get a proper hold on him especially when he refuses to be picked up.

I guess I was surprised about his diarrhea because Abbie as a puppy NEVER had soft poop. In her entire 4 years with me she has yet to have it so I got scared lol

Time is going by so fast. I feel like this year is zooming along and I’m being left behind.

I hope Brevin feels better soon and grows out of this mushy poop phase. It’s never fun to be dealing with poopy butt for long periods of time.

Skipper’s Mama: Poor Tohka! I hope he gets better quickly. How big is he now? Did they weigh him at the vet? Do you know how old he might be? Maybe him and Oscar are around the same age. Oscar turned 10 weeks yesterday and weighs 1.5 lbs.

Since he’s doing so well with his litter box, we’ve been letting him explore the dining room where his cage is located. He loves it, zooming and binkying all over the place. He loves to dig though, so as soon as you sit down on the floor with him, he’ll come over and goes to town on your clothes! The first time he did it to me I thought “Aw, that’s so cute! I know he’ll start to nibble when he’s digging, but he’s just a tiny baby, how bad could it hurt?”… Then he gave me a good chomp on my side, you can still see it. I won’t let him do that anymore, he’s got some big teeth in that little mouth!

Awww poor Brevin! Chance was found abandoned at the side of the highway and the woman that found him kept him overnight before posting him on CL (where I got him). No idea what he was eating originally, then food at the rescuers house and then a new food at mine sure gave him a nasty tummy. I still get sad thinking about those first few days.

Skipper’s Mama, have you tried bunny burrito? I used that to get the painkillers and antibiotics in Bromley. Have him sit on a lap or the couch, have one person lay a towel across him and hold it down so he can’t move and then shoot the meds in fast. A towel is harder to escape then our hands.

NBO – Hope Brevin’s vet check up went well!

Helo and Inara go in for their spay/neuter next Thursday! I’m nervous and excited all at the same time.

We actually just got back from the vet he has roundworms and tapeworms and we got him a pill to take care of the issue. Also got him his booster. She wanted to go ahead and do frontline and heart guard but Abbie is severly allergic to frontline and I just don’t want to expose her to it again. Plus, he’s so tiny! I want o wait until he is a bit older and bigger before introducing such a chemical. He doesn’t have fleas and we check regularly. If he comes down with even one flea, it’s a dawn soap bath.

I can’t believe they are already old enough for a spay! I feel like it was just yesterday you brought those cute little babies home

I have to announce that Bromley’s staples were removed from his neutering incision this morning and the vet said the incision healed fine! Such a relief since this whole process has been a nightmare! Another two weeks and I can take him to bunny speed dating! I’m just a little worried about how he will adjust to the 1-2 hour car ride. :S

For those that know my past dog, Bear. Just heard terrible news from his new family. The husband was given the wonderful news that he no longer had skin cancer. But on one of his check ups they found out that it has actually spread to his bone on his foot I’m so heartbroken for this family. They are such wonderful people and they were so relieved to know that he was done only to get this terrible news about now having bone cancer. Bear has been on him like white on rice. Bear knows he is unwell. The husband cant take anymore radiation because he has reached his limit. He couldn’t even fly down to california with his son and wife for an arthritis convention for his 7 year old because ther is small amounts of radiation in the air and he can’t even be exposed to that amount. So they did surgery on his foot to remove what they can and he is now on chemo and they just have to pray that is enough. Please, please pray for this very wonderful family that bears new daddy gets some strength and fights this cancer for the third time.

Thanks LBJ! yes he messaged me on facebook saying Bear was a great comfort for him and the best medicine I really feel as though this family was meant to have Bear. I sent them a “care package” last week and it had a skylander character for their son (he LOVES skylanders!) And 2 bandanas that were wrapped around 2 small bags of beef jerky for Bear lol they posted pictures of Bear tonight playing ball and he was wearing his banada! I was so excited it’s nice still being able to see him daily on facebook (they take LOTS of pictures of him) and I’m able to come over anytime I want to visit

So what happens if he is non-native? Are they going to try and catch Mr. Turtle from the pond he was released at?? Either way, I’m glad you were there at the right time for Mr. Turtle. I feel like those kids were most likely up to no good hmpf!

NBO: I’m sorry about Bears new Dad, I hope everything works out for them. I’m sure Bear is doing his best to cheer them up.

I just can’t get over how adorable Oscar is, I know you guys are probably sick of hearing it. We let him out to roam the dining room daily now, he’s not shy at all! He’ll come right up to us and either dig at our clothes or binky and zoom laps around us. He’ll let us pet him pretty much all over, the other day he flopped and Hubby started petting his belly, instead of freaking out he just rolled over so that Hubby would scratch his back instead. Yesterday Hubby was trying to get him back into the cage, Oscar didn’t want to, but he kept running up to Hubby at the cage door, just to run past him over and over, evading his hands. It was hillarious!

He’s not afraid of Lily either, she seems to be kind of disgusted with him right now but that doesn’t stop him from demanding grooms from her. When he comes up to her she’ll smell him and then make some sort of huff noise, somewhere between a sigh and a hiss, does anyone know what that means?

Wow a lot happens when you aren’t on the chat for four days.

 LBJ’s turtle discovery, reminded me of our encounter with a snapping turtle on our walk through the Nature park.  It was a pretty awesome experience.

This is what we saw.

Upon closer inspection – we noticed she was laying eggs.

So I ran to the nature park’s office – and they gave me flags, a note and rope – to keep people away from momma and her eggs.  Here’s my hubby putting up the boundary around her.

LBJ: That makes sense that she was in sort of a trance, as she did not react at all to us, as we walked around her. While we were there – she must have laid over 50 eggs. We’re not sure any of her eggs hatched….we think a raccoon got to her nest 🙁

Hi LBJ, In my experience when companies do this sort of thing and preselect it usually bites them on the bum and the person has something better lined up in the future… I am guessing this has happened to them and now they have to look for real… Do the interview and wow the socks off them.

What a day… Had an alleged Harassment Bullying interview… My BS Radar was already at full ping when I read through the initial interview/report… Can’t give out too many details but I am not a happy camper. Something wasn’t sitting right and I cornered the person making the complaint on several issues. Being was she directed to do task or labour that was not assigned to other people. she umm and arred and said no, just complained that she was not accustomed to manual labour. (That’s what the job is, light manual labour) Then the truth comes out. Some of our itinerant workers come over from Taiwan on working visa’s to build up a bit of a nest egg before or after studies.They’re great people and it’s mutually beneficial as they get paid a good rate and enjoy the environment. We recently had a large group return home so did not have the additional workers for about a week. This “person” slipped and commented that with the “Asians” not present she was forced to do manual work when there should have been “Asians” there to do the heavy lifting and dirty work… She is obviously not very perceptive or she would have caught the look both I and the Safety committee rep gave her. Most of her complaints were against her manager and supervisor, I must have been slow on the uptake today as the penny did not immediately drop as I don’t categorise friends and colleagues by colour or race. Suddenly the light went on and I realised that her manager and supervisor would look Asian to a bigot… I cannot recount all of the absolute vitrioal, lies and garbage that spewed from this woman’s mouth but having confirmed with my witness (who actually picked it up before I did) that I was not imaging things. I will be having a further word with the individual tomorrow and pointing out a few things in regard to the distribution of labour and how it is done. I think I became most aggravated when she pointed out that as a devout christian her needs and desires should be deferred to above everyone elses as she is on a righteous path but her big mistake was inferring I did not know what it was like to do manual labour. I then took it upon myself to point out that several years in the family florist and nursery, 10 years in the army and many years working in warehouses had indeed made me very familiar with manual labour and that once she had crawled through the bush with kangaroo and wombat poo under her fingernails at 5 am in the winter morning carrying a rifle and wearing a pack she would be welcome to comment on my past experience. I am still amazed I did not snap and tell her exactly what I thought of her, just arranged to move her to another department. I must be mellowing in my old age.

Roberta, my heart felt compliments on keeping your temper, … What A Treat! Because of personal issues I deal with prejudice and narrow minded attitudes quite literally on an almost daily bases and very few things press my buttons so effectively. Glad you had something so totally effective and discussion stopping to put on the table re manual labour, … bet she didn’t know how to handle that! (Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling just thinking about it, … thanks for giving my day such a nice start!) Good luck with her!

Exhausted per usual – but thought I’d get caught up on the chat.

Hazel, I had to remember what you said the whole way through reading so I wouldn’t forget to respond. About the digging! ARGH. ALL my Tans do this and it drives me absolutely bonkers. No amount of yelping, bunny butting them back, or ANYTHING seems to fix it. We have given up completely on trying to fix the behavior since I’ve completely ran out of ideas. If you have a specific thing that seems to get him to stop, LET ME KNOW! I’m dying for a new idea!!

So I’ve ventured out on a new .. business path? Sort of. I just started a bunny bonding “business”…. except doing dates over skype so I can help with any issues or problems you may be having! My BF actually thought of the idea the other day because I was helping 24 people bond over e-mail. Which he thought was insane. And he told me to try doing this – since everyone I’ve been helping has been having such good luck! And they all really seem to value my help. So I decided to try. The skype sessions will be charged sessions but email and phone advice and help is completely free no matter how long we go back and forth. Bonding has always been very intriguing to me (if you couldn’t tell with 5 bonded rabbits). And this way I will get to hear even more stories and get more experience and be able to help even more people. I set it up on my rabbit blog so it kind of goes a long with a lot of the bonding topics I’ve posted. A lot of which are important things I think people always forget. I’ve had a lot of positive feedback so I’m really excited to see how this turns out!

I just got mauled unintentionally by Ox. There is something about a golden delicious apple that makes him go INSANE. He was trying to get a huge mouthful of apple and accidentally bit my finger. I now have a cut in the shape of his lower teeth.

He seriously loves these things more than bananas. I didn’t think he could love something more than bananas.

tanlover: Using the cat as a decoy seems to work. Not for long though. He’s not interested in digging at her, so after a minute he’ll come back to us and dig away. I ‘m actually planning to offer him an old towel to dig at because you mentioned the Tans enjoying theirs so much. If I discover an effective deterrant I’ll let you know!

It’s funny how some of their behaviors seem adorable at first, then turn into somewhat of a nightmare…

The bonding buisness idea is great, if anyone is qualified to give advice on bonding, it’s you! You’re already helping 24 people, that’s awesome! Maybe you could even expand to “bonding” rabbits with other species, I could use help with that.

I have been heartbroken since yesterday. I have been gearing up to get a new bun in the next couple of weeks and been talking to a rescue, but I still go on the pet section of Craigslist for funsies. Well 2 weeks ago I saw an ad for these two spayed buns:

They are in an interim home where they are outside instead of inside. I thought, hey there’s not a big difference between 2 buns and 3, so I e-mailed the person. No answer, so I replied from a different e-mail address a few days later incase it got lost in a junk folder. I was a little upset that I still did not get a reply. Well yesterday at work I decided to check that e-mail address from my desktop instead of my phone and there was a reply! I don’t know why my phone never recognized it, but they replied last Tuesday saying they were still available. I replied again (apologizing profusely) giving more details of my home and gave my number for the woman to call if she still had them. About an hour later I get a reply saying there was a tragedy on the weekend and they only have the spotted one left and to call her as soon as I can. So I take a break from work and go call her. Ya, they had been keeping them free roam in the backyard and her husband did not pen them properly when a dog came to visit this weekend and the beautiful lop was killed.

I feel so sick! Don’t get me wrong, I know accidents happen, but they should have put the rabbits safely in their hutch, not just confined in the garden area with a little wire! And I know it’s stupid, but I can’t help thinking that if I would have only checked my e-mail sooner they could both be safe at my house. You know, where “being mauled by the dog” means kisses not death. And I was made even more mad when she told me that she had the rabbits temporarily because a friend got pregnant and decided there was no room for two young rabbits in her growing family (it sickened her as well). The rex is about a year and a half and the lop was under 6 months old! I said that I would run to pick up the rex straight after work, but she is busy gearing up for her daughter’s wedding so I can’t pick her up until Friday. It is going to be a long and nervous few days. Please keep the lop in your thoughts when you hug your buns today and send good vibes that nothing will happen to the rex before I get her!

Oh Valkyrie, prayers with the poor little one that was lost, and the one waiting for you. He must be so lonely and lost. He will be lucky to be going to a good home, … a long few days. Do let us know when he is safe with you. And in the mean time think of how happy and lucky he’ll be then!

The irresponsibility of people does not surprise me but still never fails to amaze me. I know of a poor rabbit who is the casualty of a divorce . Her rabbit, she left, and left the rabbit. Now why in creation would you leave Your pet when your marriage splits!?! Beyond me, … I’m so happy I don’t know her! Fortunately he was responsible enough to do the basics but he’s a long haul truck driver so the poor little love is left alone for long stretches. Friend of mine goes in to look after him, and luckily cares enough to have taken him to a vet recently when he noticed something wasn’t right. I desperately wish I knew somewhere he could go but the only two local rescues refused another rabbit. Some times it just hurts.

I can understand that some people don’t see animals as being the special creatures we see them to be because it is a preference, but don’t get one if that’s how you feel. Whenever someone I know if thinking of getting a pet I always tell them that if they can think of even one scenario other than homelessness or terminal hospitalization where they would rehome their pet, they don’t deserve one.

When I moved into my duplex last year my new landlord told me that I may have a cat trying to break in. The last tenant moved because he and his girlfriend split up and she left her cats behind. He didn’t want them either so he just left them there! Luckily the neighbor adopted them, but one disappeared right away.

I also feel bad that I won’t be going through the rescue after all. They already approved me and had a bun in mind, but I’m sure they will understand the circumstances. And since there is no adoption fee for this rex I am going to donate $50 to the rescue anyways – that’s their adoption fee.

Re the rescue you might as well look at it this way, if you aren’t saving this rabbit’s life (strong probability that you are!) then there is a good chance it would have ended up in the rescue eventually, probably after many more sad adventures. The donation is a nice thought, and you know that they will be screening other people so hopefully the rabbits with them have a better chance of a happy home. Dear only knows what might have happened to this little one without you!

 Phew this puppy is really keeping me busy! It’s amazing how much change happens in less than two weeks though! Look at this transformation!!! 

The 1st one was the first night we got him. The second was 5 days after getting him. 3rd on was 10 days after getting him and the fourth one is 14 days after getting him. How amazing is that!! He looks completely different!

I hate how tired work leaves me. -.- Working retail really makes me want to punch people sometimes. Sadly not because of my customers. They don’t bug me when they’re being rude. It’s like whatever. But it’s my coworkers that are killing me! I work my butt off and they barely do a thing.  I wish I could slack off but my mama taught me to be a hard worker and it physically kills me to slack off. The only thing that is entertaining at work is that there is ONE guy in the whole entire store that is on the younger side (in his 20s). And all the girls have this MASSIVE thing for him. I’m literally bent over laughing at how the girls act. They literally drop what they are doing walk over to the table that is nearest to him and say in this giggly voice, “Hiiiii Charlieeeee”. It’s super ridiculious but highly entertaining. Maybe I’m just wierd that I find it so funny.

Tohka is a little tyke! He’s a little over a pound. (I’m so bad. I used to be so zealous over the measurements with the buns and now I’m like ehhh. I can spot if they’re chubby or not.) He was about 8 weeks when we got him so he’ll be about 11 weeks tomorrow? He’s grown about a half inch to an inch since we’ve gotten him. I think he’s going to be on the smaller side more or less. At least not as big as Skipper. She was a lot bigger at 11 weeks. I love hearing about your Oscar! He’s so cute! I love the baby lop faces. They’re all cute and smushy.

I seriously wish I could use the bunny burrito on him! I use it all the time with my other buns when I have to clean ears, put on flea medicine, or give Skipper her ear medicine. But Tohka is just too dang tiny. Even using the little hand towels he’s able to slip on out of them.

And don’t feel about the buns! It’s not your fault at all. And don’t worry about not going through the rescue. Sometimes you just need to take care of a little bun that’s in a horrible situation. My boyfriend says, “it’s not the bunny’s fault that he’s in a horrible situation. All you can do is help save him”. Not to mention I feel like the buns at rescues go to better places than buns at pet stores or buns being given away on Craigslist.

Well I had a pretty bad day today. Had a meeting with my adviser and things did not go as I had hoped. I’m basically being stuck with no way to pay for my tuition and insurance now. I feel so utterly pathetic. I don’t think I will ever be able to finish. =( 



Sorry, that sounded really depressing. I’m just having a hard time accepting things at the moment.

Don’t feel bad! Everyone is allowed a freakout and a day to feel down/overwhelmed. I completely understand where you are coming from. I had a break down the other after work. My feet were killing me and my ankles felt so brittle. I just got home and cried my eyes out. I have a lot bills I have to pay back and am two months behind on some of them because I didn’t have a job for most of the summer. So I’m trying to play catch up now since I’ve been working again recently. And it all just sort of got to me. I know it’s not seemly but sometimes you just need a good cry or something. Don’t feel down though. I’m sure something will come along somewhere for you. So keep your head up! 

How’s the little snakey doing? Was he able to start his shed? It’s totally adorable that he rubs his head against you! I’ve always loved snakes but I can’t help but recoil at the thought of what they eat. If they had a vegitarian snake I’d totally have him/her as a pet!

So I’ve just had my week off and been relaxing and cleaning and sorting my whole entire room! I’m also trying to teach the bunnies to spin around in a circle but they just jump on my and ransack the treats! 

Ha! I don’t have a clicker yet. (Waiting till my next couple of pay checks to get one.) But I was trying to teach Tohka spin to sort of expend some of his energy since he’s jittery. He totally did the same thing! He was like, “Screw this Ma I see those treats in your other hand. Give them here now!”.

I’m glad the site is back to normal! I can’t believe some people. I love the metal video idea by the way. It’s really neat. And I love what you do for the foster buns. It’s great that you are able to give them such a nice temporary home. Why do you think that you guys might be adopting Clover?

Skippersmama – hmmm maybe I should clicker train… May have some more success for that. We need to train buttons to go home in the evenings. He does everything to avoid going back in his home. I usually bribe him with pellets but I went out last night and mum said she’d feed them and put the away. He had her trying to get him to go home until 11:30 last night… She was so mad.

Roberta – congratulations on starskys adoption! Although its sad to see him go he finally gets a forever home

Mike – awww! Congratulations! Wow do you have 5 rabbits at once?

*Sigh…. Starsky’s coming home again… The people are devastated.. It is a brother and sister that took Starsky and Binky and they were besotted. Sadly the brother has discovered he is allergic, and when I say discovered; started as sneezing and he has since puffed up like a giant red helium ballon and lost the ability to breath through his nose, his chances of surviving another night are not good…. Oh well…. I have a feeling I know someone that he will be good with.. I was hoping to introduce him next weekend then he was adopted. Now he is coming back to me…

Oh Roberta…. I really thought this was starskys time… at least he can stay with you a little longer and obviously is a popular bunny (((hug)))

Tohka is a little tyke! He’s a little over a pound. (I’m so bad. I used to be so zealous over the measurements with the buns and now I’m like ehhh. I can spot if they’re chubby or not.) He was about 8 weeks when we got him so he’ll be about 11 weeks tomorrow? He’s grown about a half inch to an inch since we’ve gotten him. I think he’s going to be on the smaller side more or less. At least not as big as Skipper. She was a lot bigger at 11 weeks. I love hearing about your Oscar! He’s so cute! I love the baby lop faces. They’re all cute and smushy.

 

So Tohka and Oscar are just a few days apart.  I guess that means we get to experience raising a baby boy bunny together! Teenage hormones, here we come!

Oscar is actually not a lop, he’s a broken black Rex mix. Maybe you were thinking of a different bun? I agree with you though, baby lop faces are too cute! He’s also a piggy, he eats all day long. So it doesn’t surprise me that he’s a little bigger than Tohka. You need to post more pictures of him, he’s beautiful!

Your story about the girls at work made me laugh, sounds like High School.

Roberta: I’m sorry Starsky’s adoption fell through. I hate it for you as much as for him, it’s bad enough having to give him up once, you seem to be going through it over and over. I guess the bright side is you get to spend some more time with him.

LBJ10: I’m sorry you’re having a tough time, hang in there!

Hannaroo you should try clicker training. I’ve read and seen some really positive behaviors that can come about from clicker training. I had originally had issues with getting Skipper into her condo too when she was younger. I would make night time veggies for her and click my tongue to get her attention and yell, “Veggies” to get her attention. It took her a little bit to learn but she does realize now that bed time = veggies and she comes along when I call her. When I got the boys, however, things changed since I had to get the little ones out of their homes with carriers. I have dried cranberries that I taught them to jump into the carrier and they will get a treat for it. So when I bring out the carrier the buns know to jump in for playtime or to go back home. It did take some time for the buns to learn but I noticed clicking noises really does help with the association.

LBJ I’m sorry about how sucky school is. I really hate the way they have the education system set up. But don’t get me started on it because I could go on for hours. =p Awh! I’m glad that he’s looking pretty! =]

Roberta I’m so sorry about Starsky! I wish I lived in Australia I would come and adopt him for you! He seems like such a sweet snuggle love. Maybe this is the world’s way of telling you he still needs some loving time with you.

Oh yes, that was a picture the rescue sent to us. Sometimes he puts his ears wayyy back, it sure does look like he could be a Lop there.

I’m not looking forward to the hormonal phase either, just today he started giving Lily some attitude. He charged right under her belly a couple of times and grunted at her. Poor girl, she was being so nice and good with him today (giving her treats helps a lot).

LBJ, don’t just wait on your adviser… you need to be proactive, it’s your thesis that needs to get done after all If they want you to show more progress, then get your butt in gear. They expect you to finish while stressed, because thats just how it is. Everyone gets stressed, just gotta work with it. Not finishing it will be more stressful than working on it more, as not finishing it will mean a ton of wasted money on the education. I suspect you aren’t the first student your advisers have had that is stressed, so don’t count them out yet. They know what they are doing You need to be more sure of yourself, and what you have learned, missy!

Looks like I have a smart puppy on my hands! Brevin is pretty much house broken. He goes to the door and sits to go outside. He has also learned the commands sit, lay down, and roll over. Not bad for a puppy who is 9 weeks old! Super proud of him and I decided I will continue teaching him more things! He reminds me of my first puppy I ever had, Tooter. I taught Tooter sit, down, roll over, play dead, army crawl, shake, pray, dance, speak, go lay down, sit pretty, balance a treat on his nose, balance it on his actual mouth by him holding his head back and me placing the treat on his lips and then catching it when I say so, holding a treat in his mouth until I say so, lining up toys and him grabbing the particular one I ask for. When he played dead I took it to the next step and he would play dead and I could flip him around and carry him to a different place and lay him down and he would continue playing dead until I said, “Tooter, you’re ok!!!” And he would snap back up lol there were probably more tricks but with so many it gets hard listing them all. Anyhoo, I taught these to him before he hit 6 months!
I went home this summer, 8 years later, and I was sitting on the deck and Tooter was walking by me and I go, “Tooter” and he stops to look at me and I hold my hand up like a gun and go “bang” and he just fell over dead! I was surprised he still remembered! Lol

Tooter and I have this odd connection. It is like he understands exactly what I am asking and just does it. When I was home there was this very very big cricket thing and it jumped around and I started FREAKING out and I was like Tooter! Help, get it get it! So he ran over and started killing it! “No, don’t eat it, stop! I said and he stops. It starts moving and I was like “jk, get it Tooter! Get it!” And he starts getting it again and I was like “stop, no more dint!” And he stopped and it started moving again and I was like “get it again!” I was freaking out! This went on a cew more times. Lol I was screaming and I didn’t want him to eat it but I wanted it dead so I kept telling him to get it, check to see if it were dead, if it wasn’t I had him continue getting it until he killed it and threw the thing away. The cricket thing was like as big as my palm! Hit me square in the head!

Sorry everyone, I have been gone too long to respond to everything!

I know I said I would give an update Friday night when I got the new bun, but that didn’t happen due to a horrible allergic reaction. Saturday I woke up covered in hives and Sunday my face was so swollen that I could barely open my eyes. The ER wouldn’t do anything Sunday night (I had the swelling for over 12 hours at that point and couldn’t get it down any further myself) and told me to just keep taking Benadryl and antihistamines like I was medicating myself with. I guess because I wasn’t having trouble breathing they weren’t concerned. But Monday it was worse again, I guess the medication wore off during the night, so I went to the clinic. They gave me Pregnazone and I have to carry an epipen now. We still don’t know what caused the allergic reaction, one of the doctors thought I might actually be having two different reactions fighting for supremecy. My closest guess is that it was from rescuing the new bun. The custom hutch that she came with was not cleaned and full of moldy, dirty straw. I happen to be allergic to mold and straw. They pulled most of the straw out before loading it into my car, but I guess driving almost 2 hours with it in my car with the windows up (had to use a/c so that the bun wouldn’t be scared on the freeway) was all it took.

But anyways, onto the bunny news!
What a mess! I got off work early on Friday and arranged with the woman to pick her up at 4:30. I arrived at 4:30, but she wasn’t home. She said she was just a couple blocks away organizing for a party and to text if I beat her to her house, so I did. At 4:45 she texts me back that she is on her way. When she gets there, she takes us to the backyard and starts calling the bunny and shaking her food dish. THE BUNNY WAS STILL FREE ROAM OUTSIDE!!!! It was hard enough to believe that she didn’t catch the bunny before I arrived, but keeping it loose after the other one had been killed?! So she chased out from between two sheds, through some bushes, and into the garden where she was finally caught and put in my cat carrier. Good thing I brought my cat carrier and not my bunny carrier because she is not a small bunny! Then the woman goes to show me the hutch WHICH SHE NEVER CLEANED OUT IN ADVANCE! I could have forgiven a bit of a dirty hutch if she had at least been keeping the bunny in it, but nope. And it is filthy and smelly! It is still in my backyard waiting for a deep bleach clean and power washing, but that will have to wait until the weekend. Since there is a chance that the hutch caused my allergic reaction, my husband won’t let me near it and has offered to clean it himself. So for now, the bunny is kept in my temporary cage while I am at work, but she doesn’t seem to mind it. I just feel bad because she is used to a big backyard, but so far she is pretty lazy.

She came with the name Professor, but it doesn’t really suit her (but it is funny since I work at a university). So we decided to name her Odette to match Bromley (any other Swan Princess fans here?), but also call her Odie for short or Professor Odie. Odie also works because of her huge ears. She is already getting along with Gypsy and let’s her hang out in her cage with her. And to my great suprise, she is not afraid of Chance at all and will go nose to nose with him when her cage door is open. I thought she would be terrified because of what happened to her friend so I kept them apart, but whenever I snuck the dog past her cage she would reach out to try to sniff him. I had seen her interacting with the cats and small dogs in her last home, so I decided to let her meet Chance since she was trying. And sure enough, she gave him kisses and no signs of fear at all. Every time he walks past the cage she runs up to the bars and calls him over. She doesn’t get to meet Bromley until this weekend (it will then be one month since his neutering). I expect it to go smoothly since she just lost her bonded friend. And if he tries to get too frisky she is twice his size and can easily make him behave. And here is the best news: she went right back to her litter habits and has had no mistakes!!! I thought I would have to retrain her completely but she seems to remember her house rabbits days perfectly.

I got her to the vet Monday night and she is healthy. We discovered that she is missing one of her top teeth, but the other one has grown in a little crooked to compensate. The vet said just to keep an eye on it and make sure she eats her hay so that it doesn’t overgrow. She is also a little overweight, but I think she was getting too many raisins before I got her so that will drop off quickly with a proper diet. Her nails are also overgrown even when clipped so I have to train the quicks back. She was perfect in the vet though and never squirmed during her exam.

Here she is! I can’t wait to get better pictures once I am feeling better (today is my first day back at work and out of bed in general)!

Valkyrie you poor thing! I’ve had hives like that before when I was travelling around Argentina. It was awful. So itchy and painful all at the same time. I never worked out what I was allergic to. My Spanish wasn’t good enough! On the other hand Odette is gorgeous! She is so lucky to have been rescued by someone who will look after her properly.

NBO – you sound like a dog whisperer! I should get some tips from you for my parents. They have a 8 month old Great Dane puppy that already weighs 55kg (121 pounds). Trying to train her is a nightmare because she’s so big she just sits on you if she’s trying to keep you quiet She’s adorable though – very gentle and really really dopey.

Congrats LBJ!!!! That is way more than a little good news! My mom was bugging me again about going for my master’s but I was like ya, no! The university got enough of my money for now and they can just keep paying me for a change! XD (I work at the university that I got my degree at.)

I have decided that since I named the new bun Odette, I definitely have to get cracking on my bunny castle now lol!

Odette’s previous caretaker e-mailed me from an update. She is very happy that she seems to be fitting into my home perfectly, but couldn’t resist saying that she has been puppysitting the dog that killed Odette’s friend and it has been scouring the yard looking for bunnies. Excuse me while I get sick… I know it is natural for most dogs and I would never love a dog any less for acting on that instinct, but she doesn’t have to treat it like a joke.

Wow I can’t believe the previous owner had the nerve to tell you about that. Very insensitive.

LBJ, congrats! Don’t you just love ow when you feel like you are stuck in a room with no where to go and suddenly a door opens. I’m glad things are turning around for you

So Brevin has learned two more trick today. He can give his paw and spin in a circle. So that’s 5 tricks in his pocket at 10 weeks. I think the next trick will be speak and we’ll work on that tomorrow when he gets to be a couple months older I’m going to start doing the more complicated stuff like playing dead, praying, balancing tricks on the nose and such as that takes concentration and you just can’t get that very muchfrom a 10 week old puppy lol I know I want to start teaching him to bow that way at the end of his tricks he will do a now at the end haha I think that will be cute :p

NBO: Yep, he sounds like an agility candidate to me! I’m glad his training is going so well! I taught Chance like 5 different paw tricks when he was young just because I could. My mom thought that “shake” would be fine, but he loved it so much that I taught him a bunch of variations – high five, regular shake, touch an object, other paw, etc…. The newest one will only make sense if there are other Dragonball fans on here… I taught him to put both front paws in the air as high as he can to give his power to Goku.

Had a police standoff right by my house. Lots of police and guns a few yards next to me. When the guy came out the police rushed him with like 10 rifles in his face until he got on the ground to surrender. It was intense!

Well all I heard of from neighborhood gossip was that he was a part of a shooting. The police had him cornered but he slipped by and ran into the house. The police then surrounded the house and knowing he was a dangerous man, they feared he had a gun in the house so when he came out to surrender they treated him as if he had a gun until he was in their custody. The man came RUNNING out towards the police so I could understand why they reacted with guns up ready to shoot and yelling at him to get on the ground. You don’t just charge. You move slowly lol it was a pretty cool watch and I got front seats because it was so close to the house lol

But of course I want know the REAL whole story until it comes on the news or something. Because my neighbor was the one who said he was a part of a shooting the previous night or something. Like a robbery and a shooting type thing and left a man in the hospital.

So…When you say strange dutch rabbit, you mean a rabbit you don’t know just appeared in the room with them ? How on earth did it get in ?

Well, I’m back after a loooong break! I’ve been pretty much snowed in once more with homework. I swear they give it to us in waves, we have heaps, have a break of about a week…then another 4 weeks of torturous extra work! Grr! Either way, I’ve just hit my free week! :3 I had some stupid algebra test in math today and IT SUCKED. I’m not being a show off when I say that I got 7 A’s in my last report…I did get a B, in Society and Enviroment (Like geography and history rolled into one!) and a C in cake decoration, which is just an ‘extra.’ All the other subjects, English, math, science, health, physical education, performing arts and so on, were A’s. that got me my fighter fish I’ve been wanting for ages! He’s doing good btw! but does anybody else struggle with algebra? I’d really prefer it if English and math were kept SEPERATE thanks! >_<

Hehe I found a funny photo that was like ‘Then Satan said, put the alphabet in math.’ And I just thought it related so well to my situation! I feel like I’ve failed this test on algebra though…AAAAND I’m rambling because my brain feels like cotton wool….oops

usako had a seizure this afternoon and started doing barrel rolls like an alligator,, shana had to hold her so she wouldn’t hurt hurself for several minutes until she stopped, then we rushed to the vets

Oh no Hope little Usako is okay Healing vibes headed her way, and calming vibes headed to you and Shana!

we dont know what for sure caused it,, but she has always had chronic upper respitatory infections,, at the end of july she was getting really white-boogery and the nose drops were’nt helping and we were almost out of enrofloxyn. we got a refill for that and she was on it until aug 10th.
only a few days later it started to come back. we put her back on it yesterday morning a few hours before the incident. she didnt give any signs of anything being wrong, but she suddenly woke up and started doing these violent spins,, it wasnt just a stroke or vertigo because she was doing full 360s. shana grabbed her to hold her immobilized while i called the vets and got the carrier.
shana said her legs were stiff the whole time and suddenly after a few minutes she just stopped and went limp and exhausted.
when we got her to the vets she was still shaking a little but nothing like the convulsions. her temp was really high, but we have the house at 79 with fans blowing 24/7. 79 in low arizona humidity is more than comfortable. they covered her with cold washcloths and it brought her temp down about 2-3 degrees. she didnt break any bones which was shanas concern.

we are going to keep her on maintenence enrofloxin as well as penicillin shots 2x a week. probably for the rest of her life. they showed me how to administer them, i was really nervous that id hurt her so they actually had me give the first one at the vets office. she seems in control of herself now, but she’s just not as alert and responsive as normal. we dont know if this was the sinus infection that made its way to her brain or what. there could be some minimal brain damage if this is related to the infection. it could be a tumor of some sort.. but whatever it is, it was definitely neurological so its really hard to pinpoint without a full MRI. she’s too old to get e-cuniculi, because carrier rabbits would have shown symptoms long before age 9.5
if we get another seizure we’re going to have bloodwork done and add anti-seizure meds to the list.

LHM so sorry this is happening to Usako. My friend has a 12 year old rabbit that has been having seizures as well and her vet put Butterscotch on phenobarbital to help make the seizures less severe….that is interesting about the EC and definitely makes sense. I don’t think my friend’s vet knows the cause either and at her advanced age I think they just want to control the seizures if they can…I need to ask her for an update.

usako’s boogers have always only been in her right nostril for the past few years, so the vet thinks it’s something thats in the nasal membranes rather than something based in the throat or lungs. unfortunately that’s really close to her brain so if it flared up really badly it could travel. before they would reoccur once every 2 months or so and we’d knock it right out with a few days of antibiotics and she’d be good. this time i think we cant let up anymore. its not an issue of the money, but im just worried what happens once she builds up a tolerance to the meds. at least we work from home so we are able to drop everything and race to the vets if things take a turn for the worse.

we got Rini & Usako only a month after Shana & I moved in together in 2004, so It’s hard to remember anything from what it was like before them. we were pisspoor and i was delivering pizzas, but we had the bunnies

Hopefully the pen-g and enrofloxin will keep everything in check then. I think you will do fine on the pen-g shots. How did they give you the pen-g? Hopefully it’s not in the syringes already with the needle – I had the vet give me the pen-g this way before and I found that the needles got condensation on them and it was not possible to give the injection – it always worked with better for me to have the pen-g in a separate container and then fill the syringe on my own.

Bear’s new family can’t catch a break. First the husband has skin cancer and now their 7yr old son was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Prayers for them. Hopefully things start looking up for them.

Yes he does! I know they hit puberty between 3 and 6 months, but he’s only 13 weeks old today!   He’s not wasting any time, he started leaving poops all over the place yesterday. Up until now he rarely ever left a single one on the floor. I guess it could be worse though, at least he’s not spraying (yet).

As to that lady that keeps bugging you, I would just ignore her, if she actually asks your opinion, I would do what Roberta said and tell her you’re not allowed to discuss these things at work.

Mike: I’m so sorry Usako is having trouble, I hope the medications will do the trick!

LHM – sending lots of vibes! It’s so sad to see a bunny that’s been around you for so long get sick but I hope it’s treatable!

LBJ: I do not miss that about retail AT ALL! At least working in a university now, most people keep their spiritual or political comments to themselves unless it comes up in a class or you know someone closely. I live in what is known locally as the Bible Belt so I have been in awkward situations like that many times. I always found “Sorry, it is not appropriate for me to discuss these matters while I am at work” a very useful phrase.

NBO: That absolutely breaks my heart.

So I may not be on as much as normal for the next while. I am having a case of when it rains, it pours. Just as I was getting over that allergic reaction last week, my leg cramped up on Friday. I have had regular leg cramps since I was a kid so I didn’t think much of it. But when it wasn’t getting any better by yesterday morning, I went to the clinic. The doctor immediately sent me to Emergency in the next town over because they think it may be a blood clot. I spent all day in the hospital and the blood test did not come back negative. It can’t tell if there is a blood clot already formed or if I am at risk of one so in an hour I have to go for an ultrashound for confirmation. I am so scared!!!! A little over a month ago my cousin dropped dead from a blood clot at 39. I am only in my mid-twenties… The good news is that if it is a clot, they are highly treatable in the leg. But I don’t know how this will affect my future or what changes I have to make. Every time I get a leg cramp, will I have to race to the ER just in case? Will they decide I am at too great a risk of it reoccurring and can’t have kids? Will I have to stay on blood thinners and never get another tattoo? (I was supposed to get one with my husband in November for our anniversary. Plus I don’t have my Bunnicula one yet.) I have been crying pretty much non-stop. And I’ve missed 4 days of work now between the allergic reaction and this so I am stressing about my finances. And I had an interview this morning and it was really awkward limping in to it with my hospital bracelets. :S

Valkyrie – sounds like you need some healing vibes too! (((Hugs and vibes))) try not to panic at this stage, blood clots can be treated and at least they now know your a high risk for them and can monitor you regularly. I hope it’s nothing too scary or life changing xxxxx

LBJ: Ya I am on the pill, but they said that blood clots are listed as a side effect of the pill mostly due to people that take them and also smoke. I don’t smoke and apparently it is very rare for a non-smoker to get them from being on the pill. I asked the doctors about it and they said I should stay on the pill because it isn’t likely that they are the cause and the sudden change in hormone levels from suddenly hopping off of them could cause other problems.

Well yesterday’s ultrasound went well…I guess. They were able to confirm that there are no clots in my thigh, which is the high risk area. Unfortunately they could not get a good scan of my calf where the pain is occurring because of my ridiculously tiny blood vessels. So they cannot rule out the existence of one, but the good news is that it is a low risk area so I don’t need to go onto preventative blood thinners or off of the pill. I have to have another ultrasound on Tuesday to try again. I am also showing no other symptoms of a clot (no swelling, vericose veins, or difficulty breathing), so although they cannot rule them out there is a good possibility that there are none. The pain is also less today than it has been since it started last Friday and I am hoping that isn’t just because I spent two days on my butt waiting in the hospital instead of at work. Fingers crossed that it is just a really stubborn cramp!

Gosh I feel so guilty! Yesterday and today my husband and my shifts got out of wack and I unable to go to the store for veggies. So to kinda help I have been giving them dandelion greens, grass, raspberry leaves, grape vine, chocolate mint, grapefruit mint, and peppermint from the garden to feed them. I feel so terrible I allowed them to run out of veggies. I MIGHT be able to go to the store tomorrow but if not I will just cave in and harvest the chard and romain a bit early so they can have something. They have had a little bit of this stuff before so I know it’s not upsetting their stomachs but its definitely out of their routine because they usually have lettuces as the staple *sigh* I’m slacking!

It’ll be a week before i can get the veggies myself if i cant get them tomorrow and the lettuces are almost done anyways that’s why I was thinking of just doing it early. and I need to keep my grape vine at bay so I trim and give. And as I pick the raspberries I have to trim the bush so I give them those. The raspberry and grapevine they get is just from me cleaning up the garden. I probably have enough grapevine and raspberry leaves and mint to sustain them for awhile lol but I’m sure they would want something they really love, like kale! I hate having one car! I work at 6am-2pm everyday and then I have to rush home to let my husband go to work and he doesn’t get off until 11:30pm. Normally we have the perfect schedule where having one car isn’t an issue because we would both be off on mornings and work evenings and i just take him to work on my way to work and pick him up when i get off. but my occupation decided to just work against us this week lol do you think this diet will be ok for a week of it comes to that? I mean if not, I will just go to a 24 hour store in the middle of the night if I have to lol can’t have my babies go hungry!

Two coworkers went on vacation and another went on sick leave for 8 weeks and then one quit so I have been loaded with hours! I will enjoy my next couple of paychecks

Gosh Brevin had an allergic reaction to his puppy shots today throwing up and wobbly but nothing severe like Abbie when she went anaphylactic with her rabies a few months ago. Now I’m so nervous when he goes in next month for his final round and his rabies. Ugh they say allergic reactions with vaccines are rare. So how exactly did I get lucky with 2 for 2 dogs that are vaccine sensitive! Vibes for Brevin as he isn’t feeling well. He’s in his crate right now sleeping the effects away. Poor guy

Oh and he also has a hernia too. They will fix it when he goes to get neutered

Oh no, poor Brevin. Do your vets not offer a pre-shot for vaccines? My mind’s gone completely blank on what it’s called but it reduces negative reactions from the vaccine. Tribble always has to have one before any vaccine or else she has a reaction. I’ll let you know what it’s called when I remember the name of it, that way you can bring it up with your vet if you wish.

Antihistamine shot. We are doing that next time for brevin but not for Abbie as her reaction was so severe that it either will lesson the reaction or wot do a darn thing and she just drops dead. She was seriously in a life threatening situation. Scariest thing of my life. Abbie had hives, swelling in her face for a couple hours after the vaccine. But within minutes of getting the vaccine she collapsed and was unable to get up for a good hour while the vet was working with her. She even lost control of her bowels. I was so afraid she was going to die right in front of me but she is exempt luckily brevin we are just going to give him benedryl before his next vaccine since his reaction was mild. He was throwing up a lot and his balance was off for a couple hours but he is back to normal right now.

That’s the one! I’m glad Abbie made it, didn’t you get her exempt from having to get vaccines? I think I would have had a heart attack if Tribble had such a bad reaction. I was freaking out enough as is when she had her first reaction, she went all bug eyed, was throwing up, was shaky and weak for the whole night.

I’m glad Brevins alright though, he’s much too cute to be sick.

Yeah Abbie is now exempt from the rabies vaccine thank god! Even if she wasn’t I wouldn’t get her another shot lol and Brevin is back to being crazy ole Brevin!

Usako didn’t have a seizure, and there’s no nerve damage or paralysis. it was a severe disorientation from vestibular disease.
her tympanic bulla (the round circles) have grown really thick from the chronic sinus infections shes been having off and on since her youth.
and they tend to trap the infection (and pus) inside the middle ear which gave her extreme vertigo and caused the rolling.
its not really operable on rabbits because its extremely invasive to drain them and only been done once on one but without any followup progress report.
shes going to be on pen-g shots the rest of her life in order to keep it under control as best as possible. her nose hasnt been runny the past week since she’s been on the shots and enrofloxyn combined, but she has still had quite a few disorientation and stumbling moments.
if she begins to go into a bad spin again, we have to try to hold her stead and put a blanket over her head so she cannot see the horizon. the conflict between what the inner ear senses and what visual orientation tells her would only prolongs the attack. if an attack doesn’t eventually subside, then we’ll have to take her in to be put down. FUCK!!

That sucks Mike, I’m sorry. While it’s always a relief to know what you are dealing with it makes it painful to know it’s chronic even though there is hope the pen-g injections can help.

Gah it deleted everything I typed. Lets try this again. At 3:45 this morning I woke up to give Brevin a bathroom break and get ready for my husband and my morning run. When I walked into the hallway I realized that it was flooded! Had a slipped gasket in the bathroom AGAIN. the bathroom, hallway, and even the entrance to our bedroom was flooded. So I ran to wal mart to rent a rug doctor and sucked up about 8 gallons of water from my carpet and drenched 10 towels for the bathroom. They are rung out and in the dryer for a second go at the bathroom. But I got as much as I can from my carpet.
What a great day off so far and it’s only 5:20AM haha

And since I already have the rug doctor might as well clean all the carpets in my house! So I will be cleaning carpets at 6:15am after my husband leaves for work lol So my one day off this week has turned into a big carpet cleaning day! Happy Friday my friends!
