Our neutered Holland Lop grew into a monster bunny and outgrew his old hutch, so my boyfriend and I built him a 3 level ‘bunny condo’ that provides so much more space and opportunity for exercise while we’re at work. Unfortunately now he’s confused as to where to go to the bathroom, even though we took the same litter box and litter from his old cage and placed it in the new one. He has peed and pooped everywhere BUT there. I feel so bad because I know he’s just confused, but I’m getting tired of cleaning up poop all over the living room! Should I wait it out? Suggestions?

Also I’ve already tried putting some poops in the litter box hoping that would encourage him, as well as hay right next to it. Nada.

Buns are funny that way. After we built our buns a 3 story condo – I placed 1 of their 2 litter boxes in the condo – and it was NEVER used. So I finally gave up, and put it where I used to have it. Now they use it again. Since I never lock them up in the condo – it wasn’t a big deal….but you may have to keep your bun contained to a small area – until he starts to use the litter box again – before letting him free in the living room for extended periods of time.

He’s probably not confused, he knows where the box it, but this sounds like marking behavior. You’ve changed his space so now he needs to claim it as his own. Keep picking up after him, it should subside within the next few weeks. You might also try not picking up after him TOO OFTEN. Clean up 1-2 times a day and that’s it. This way you know his scent is getting around. If it’s just poop, they’re dry, not a big deal.
