So, ive been wanting to adopt a bunny for a long time and ive done a lot of research, unfortunatley my mom thinks that a bunny would be too much to take care of, i know that they can be a lot of work, but i think i could handle it. I thought i might foster care a bunny and see what it would be like to take care of a bunny.

Does anybody know any animal rescue shelters in new jersey that need foster homes??

I don’t know of any NJ rescues off the top of my head, but check out Pet finder and contact your local chapter of the HRS.

A couple things to keep in mind:

If you are a minor, you would not be able to legally foster. This is the same as with adoption. An adult would need to be the one to fill out all of the paperwork and assumes all responsibility. (Again, I don’t know if you are a minor or you just live at home still…)

Some rescues require a pretty large time commitment. You (or your mom if she is the legal foster) may be spending weekends traveling to local adoption events. When you foster, the goal is to get the rabbit placed for adoption, and to do this, he/she needs to be highly visible.

Additionally, people may be coming over to your house to meet the rabbit.

You might have the bunny for a week, you might have the bunny for months. It’s emotionally taxing to foster, b/c although you know it’s temporary, you can’t help but get attached.

Let us know if you have any more questions.

There used to be a shelter called Little Miracles but they had some problems. I don’t know if they are still going but last heard they were relying solely on Fosters…… Just trying to remember where Red Door is… I know there are several in and around the area.

I just wanted to add a few things about emotional involvement. It’s great that you want foster! I’m not trying to dissuade you by any means. But do be prepared for becoming emotionally attached to the bun you foster. If/when your foster bun gets adopted you will feel conflicting emotions of happiness and sadness. Happy they’re going to a good home but sad he/she will be leaving. Personally, I couldn’t handle it and ended up adopting my foster bun. I ended up feeling like despite how great of a family he may be going to they would not be as patient with him as I was or as understanding. That being said fostering is one of the most rewarding things you can do. And do be prepared for wanting to adopt your foster bun!

If you can I would talk to your mom and the possible rescue and tell them about your situation. They may want to have you try foster-to-adopting instead of straight up fostering. I found that its best to be open with rescues and just explain your situation.
