Hey guys, so we have a male and female bonded couple, Gorie and Alfie (and another girl in the other room that we’re waiting to bond). They live in an air conditioned room, and it’s always super comfortable in there.

They have both water bowls and water bottles, because I’m serious about hydration. But Alfie always goes under one of the bottles that drips, and sits right under it. He’s a big sitter, less active than Gorie, and so in the process he gets soaking wet from the dripping. I tried moving the water bottle, thinking he was just defiant about the spot he wanted to sit in, but he just moved his spot and sat right under it again. So it’s really that he likes the water dripping on his backside…

Now, Alfie has always been a little bit of a strange bird and sometimes his behaviors aren’t totally understandable (we think he may have been hit in the head or traumatized during Hurricane Sandy because that’s when he was abandoned before we adopted him), but I’m just getting concerned that he’s trying to correct something in his little bunny way that I’m not seeing. I don’t see anything in his fur and I don’t feel any bumps on him, and the last time we went to the vet she said he was perfect but I didn’t think to mention the water thing. I don’t know what this dripping water will do to his skin over time, and I don’t know if I should just take the bottle away because it’s also his main source of water while Gorie prefers the bowl.

One point is that he does have an incurably leaky eye, it tears constantly. We’ve taken him to two vets, and there’s nothing we can do about it. I don’t know if that’s a clue to this mystery, or if Alfie is just doing another weird thing. Has anyone seen this before?

If he moves to sit under it again, I guess he likes it. Maybe it helps him stay cool. It’s up to you whether you want to take the bottle away.

Has your vet checked his teeth? Leaky eye sounds like teeth problems.

As I said, we took him to two vets. It’s not teeth problems, he just has an eye condition. They explained it at the shelter when we adopted him and we checked it out twice anyway.

I don’t know why he would have to stay cool if the room is air conditioned. I guess he’s just a little odd. Thanks for your help.

Could it feel like another bunny grooming him?

You know, I thought that. The tip of the bottle just touches his back, and he’s a monster for cuddles. He just comes right up to you and plops down expectantly whenever you come into the room and won’t move no matter how long you pet him, so it might be that.

Im really new here and to being a bunny guardian…but my bun has a weird thing for water/moisture too. Sometimes she will step into her water dish, and not act like she even notices. When I first got her I gave her a “bath” (just a bit of lukewarm water in the tub) because she came from outside, she did NOT like it. But about 3 weeks ago our AC started to leak, and it leaked out of our furnace room and soaked up into the carpet, and I could not get her to quit laying in the wet spot!! I cleaned the water up, tried to keep it as dry as possible, but she loved laying there. And she would be soaked from laying there…it made no sense. But I figured it must be her trying to stay cool. When she is in her cage at night she will not lay on her blankies, she will only lay on the cool plastic parts. Strange buns
