Every once in a while I see someone refer to their vet as “one of the Top Rabbit Vets in BLANK AREA” . I see this a lot on Facebook.

I’ve always been curious as to how this is determined? Is there a vet ranking system or listing? Is it that they’ve been published? Is it just something people say? Ect… Just something I’ve wondered about for a while.

Just for clarification: This has nothing to do with anything I’ve seen on this forum and I’m not worried about my own vet or anything.

Well, I know that HRS has some recommended vets and they have 2 very good vets that see their rabbits and have or had been board members.

Of course it’s hard to know what people on FB’s criteria is…there’s no telling there unless you ask them I think.

Maybe it’s a vet who published papers or books on rabbit health, is recognized by other vets, works with rescues, see’s lots of rabbits….

Thanks Sarita! I think next time I see it I’ll ask whoever says it.

Just wanted to make sure the post office didn’t lose my best vets in the US decoder ring.

LOL – I want one of those :~)

I know in England, Dr. Frances Harcourt-Brown is renowned because she wrote a book on Rabbit Medicine. Also Dr. Carolyn Harvey and Dr. Susan Brown both who help House Rabbit Society in writing articles and caring for their rabbits as renowned rabbit vets.

I’ll be interested to hear what kind of responses you get when you do ask though :~)

So to sort of add to this topic. I just wanted to ask. Do vets have to have certain qualifications to go to the HRS conventions and be on the board?

HRS doesn’t have conventions. I imagine that to be on the board they ask someone they feel is qualified as far as vets that can contribute to the organization. They usually only have one vet on the National HRS board of directors (at least in the capacity of “Health Director” – most of this is set up in a 501c’s initial paperwork as to the set up of the BOD.

I tend to base that on the amount of experience they have, plus outside things they are involved with. For example, my current vet has worked with some very high up people, written papers, done some studies, etc and is generally highly regarded, so I would say she’s one of the best. Her practice is also only exotics, which to me says she is serious about them. The new vet at her practice is a girl I went to college with, so even though she only has 5 or so years of experience, I automatically like her 😛

I have seen exotic vets who work at primarily dog and cat practices and only see a few rabbits a month, and I wouldn’t consider them the top rabbits vet in the area (though I’m sure they’re competent).

I agree with this. Those who have published papers in professional journals get recognition within their field.
I suppose lecturers in exotic veterinary medicine would be highly regarded also. I wonder how much those regarded as Top vets still practice much though? Especially if they’re running courses. I would think any vet who takes it upon themselves to do continually educate themselves on exotics and do skills training could be equally as good a vet.
