  Hi,
  I am Lola’s mum and Lola was spayed yesterday at a local vet. I pondered which vet to take Lola to for a long time, being miles away from any rabbit specialists I called and called vets asking about their experience with rabbits and went for a local one. (They assure me they see Many-a-rabbit).
  I think I regret the decision already…
  I didn’t inspect Lola’s incision until tonight, 24 hours post her surgery. Vet said all went well, but on inspection I have noticed Lola’s incision is NOT a straight clean line/cut…(I will try to get a photo ASAP).
  It is more like a circular wound, with very raised skin and obvious swelling still.
  I knew this was unusual as my friend got her rabbit spayed last week and her incision was clean and precise.
  Anyhow. She is eating and pooping well as has had some take home pain relief. She seems happy.
  I guess I just want to know if we wound should look anything but a straight incision line….
  I feel like I don’t want to take her for her post check up to the same vet if not.

  I don’t really think the incision line is a concern, but swelling is. If it is still clearly swollen, and not going down, and especially if it has some redness, call the vet. She may need to be seen or treated if an infection is starting. But if it’s better, not painful, and less swollen, I would just be sure to not let her jump up on anything for a week and keep an eye on it. It will be healing properly if there is less swelling – preferably no swelling at all.
  
  You can’t change the nature of the incision now. It may be something to do with the doctors instruments or style. But if it makes you uncomfortable and your friend has a vet you think you’d like better, you should consider a visit to that vet next. You can either take your bunny to that vet now to give you a second opinion on the healing from the spay, or just finish the process with this vet and go for a wellness exam with the new vet after about a month.

  Thanks so much RabbitPam. It is such a weird incision site!! It is like circle incision with herniated tissue which is raised below her belly button. All in all it looks very strange….but it does not look overly red or infected, or overly swollen except for in that one spot. It is possible that maybe they cut her skin in places when they shaved her…and that’s why it looks funny. I am just going to monitor it over the next few days, making sure it doesn’t get any worse. I am going to get a house-visit vet for her check up, as I feel so mean taking her back to the vet so soon and she would be more comfortable at home.

  It’s hard to say what the problem could be but I can share my experience with Olivia. Her spay incision healed up nicely but left a belly button-looking bump along the incision line. The vet concluded it was an infection that developed in the skin folds. She was put on antibiotics and it went away.

  Edit: a photo of the incision day 3 after surgery. I think maybe an ointment yet applied or chemical to her skin may have burned her.

  The spot looks as if she may have been picking at the incision site. But I’m not too sure. I would watch for swelling and make sure that she is not picking at the site. I would stress that if you’re really concerned take Lola to the rabbit savvy vet to make sure everything is okay.

  Thanks Skipper’s Mama. I will keep an eye on it. Rabbit Savvy vets are at least 1.5 hours away (lola hates the car)
  I paid $300 to get her fixed 3 days ago and visiting a rabbit vet will set me back over $100 at least and at the moment I unfortunately cannot afford it, so will only visit if the site gets worse over the next few days (hopefully it doesn’t!!)
  Lola has been extremely active the last 2 days and I have been trying to calm her down as to not split her incision as best I can but it’s hard when she has energy to burn it seems!! Thanks again.

  If Lola is energetic cut back her play space and make sure that she’s not jumping. You want to make sure that she isn’t stretching the area.
  
  Is there not another rabbit vet that you can go to that is closer?

  Thanks, I will try to limit her play space. She scratches leans up and scratches on doors NON stop if left in a room with the door shut so it’s tough haha!
  No there are no rabbit vets closer. There are really only about 3 in Sydney where I live, all a long way from my house, not helpful when Lola is petrified of car rides!! I think I will just keep an eye on her tum and see how it is over the next few days. Thanks!

  Is there any way you can confine her to a small area until she’s healed? I kept my bun in a small area that I created using NIC grids. An XPen would work the same. Your bun won’t like being confined but it’s better for her.

  Just giving an update- Lola’s incision healed and she didn’t need a trip to the vet (lucky for her!). We are 13 days post surgery now.
