  Hello! So Dusty lives in a 2×4 cage with solid plastic flooring (store bought). My question is, does he need bedding like wood shavings, Carefresh, etc.? I have been using Aspen shavings but it’s becoming grimy looking fairly quickly. He is not neutered but is completely litter trained (he is a few days away from being six months old and is being neutered soon) so that isn’t a problem but just the wood gets mucky anyway. It’s a pain to clean and gets expensive so I was wondering if, as long as I put a small animal bed (fleece) and I have a large thin cloth bandana that he likes to snuggle with, in for him to rest on, is it okay to have no bedding and just the plastic solid floor?

  How big is your bun? The cage you showed seems to be very small. A bun needs a cage that is 4x their size.
  
  I would not put bedding/litter all over the cage floor. This confuses the bun during litter training. I would just make sure to keep the litter strictly to the litter box. I do not suggest using pine shavings as a litter. It can be toxic to your bun. I’m not 100% if Aspen shavings are okay or not. (Maybe another member can chime in on this.) I have found using Equine Pine or Feline Pine is the easiest litter to use. Other members on here use Carefresh for litter. I use Equine Pine and put a layer of hay on top of it. I would just stick to the plastic floor and the small animal bed that he likes to snuggle with.

  Hi I used to have a store bought cage for our bunnies before we built our new setup. I didn’t have any bedding on the floor, only a couple of old pillow cases, that the buns promptly dug into small balls and slept on the bare plastic. I think with the fleece bed and a litter box you are set up nicely, no need for bedding.

  I used to lay newspaper down for bedding, but my bunnies would move it out of the way and sleep on the floor. They also had fun tearing it apart though so it was more of a toy. I tried using Carefresh, but again my buns would push it aside and lay on the plastic floor so I stopped haha. One thing I did for Merlin though is that I bought a small cat litter box and put Carefresh in it and that became his bed. He didn’t confuse it for litter because his litter pan always had a thin layer of shavings on top of Carefresh and he used the scent of the shavings to know where to do his business. He came litter trained on cedar shavings and every time I tried to change his litter to something different (cat litter, pellets, Carefresh…), he would stop using the litterbox! So I eventually gave up and always put a small amount of the Carefresh wood shavings on top of the regular Carefresh bedding as litter.

  Hi! This cage is big enough for him… he’s a Dwarf/Lionhead mix (he only weighs 3 lbs and is very small) and the cage is eight sq ft in addition to 4-6 hours out of his cage to run around the whole first floor of my house daily.
  
  I ended up using bandana cloth (large squares of cloth) on the bottom of the cage… he’s loves it and I will post a picture of the setup asap.

  I don’t put anything on top of my buns floor. She is completely litterbox trained. You can put straw mats down so she can chew.
