So, I’m thinking I have two males (Parts look the same?) , after thinking I had a boy and a girl… I didn’t know same sex rabbits would mate….? Well, I went ahead and put them on the floor to try to see what happens…. Jack wanted to mate, and BabyBun NOT interested. Did NOT go well, after three minutes of shoving Jack off, I put a bunny away…. How do I go about this?

Well male and female parts can look pretty similar, especially on young bunnies. Mounting isn’t always “mating.” If you are trying to bond them, then mounting is a way that they show dominance to the other, and it’s actually a good thing. You should let it happen because they need to figure out the pecking order of things! t
Are they fixed? Make sure they have been fixed for a few weeks before attempting to bond.
… and when you get them “fixed” don’t be surprised if one comes back a different sex than you expected. Happened to me!

Not yet, I wanted to see if I could avoid getting them fixed. My cousin has two who are PERFECTLY bonded and unfixed, but I guess I’m not as lucky! lol. Oh & Jack kept thumping his foot down.

First, how old is “Baby”? I gather that the baby isn’t neutered? Bonding should only take place after both parties have been spayed/neutered. For one thing it is incredibly easy (and common) for mistakes to be made when determining which sex a rabbit is, … and you wouldn’t want to find out that actually one wasn’t a mail because you’ve got a litter. Another big reason to wait until after the operation is because hormones effect their behaviour. You could end up with fights and it might be very difficult to bond them later.

All that said as has been mentioned humping is part of establishing a pecking order and even after they are neutered they may well hump.

Both bunnies need to be spayed/neutered + 1 month for hormones to dissapate before bonding.

Thanks guys for all the replies, I’m going to hopefully get them to a vet, just to check em out, makesure they are in FACT boys, and if so, I might keep them unfixed and separate their whole lives.. They both get TONS of human affection, my cat loves them too! With how money is in my home, I’d only be able to get one done and I don’t think I could choose, and I’d still have the risk of the other acting up. If ones a girl, she WILL get fixed for how big the health factor is there.

Keeping them unfixed and not together in the same room is going to be a disaster – why would you do that? You seem very intent on not doing that – really after reading your posts you need to have a vet check the sex properly and ensure you truly know the sex instead of just guessing. And you need to get them altered…what are your concerns in doing this?

As for your cousins who had 2 unaltered rabbits together where they the same sex or do you really know? It’s not recommended but it can certainly happen – I rescued a pair of females that were bonded but I did the proper thing and got them spayed and it did not change their relationship.

First off, I’m glad you recognize the importance of spaying female rabbits. The high risk of cancer in unspayed, females is very scary. You want the best for them and that’s great!

I understand money limitation. Like you said, the first step is figuring out their sexes. At 6 months or so, testicles are usually visible on male bunnies. If they are both males, they don’t have to be fixed, but they would be happier if they were. They would be able to be bonded and live together. Also, litter habits would be better, they would be less stinky, and probably less likely to be destructive.

Some areas offer low cost neuter programs, or you may be able to contact a local rescue for info on inexpensive neutering.

Another option is neutering one, probably the older bunny, and then saving up for the next few months to get the second one neutered.

You might not mind keeping them separated and cleaning out two cages for now, but they will hopefully live for several years, possibly 10+. That’s a long time to care for separate rabbits and provide separate exercise time.

If you have any doubt that they are both males, I would get them to the vet ASAP. If one is a female, the chance that she is already pregnant is very high. Vets can do emergency spays that will eliminate the pregnancy if it is still in the early stages.

                          Keep us posted.

I didn’t see your last post until after I posted. No one was being disrespectful to you, and no one was giving you an attitude. We are trying to help. You posted the thread, we are just responding to what you said.

That’s funny, I’m in Akron Ohio… I’m having an impossible time finding a place that does it (Near here) and is reasonable, do you know of any places?

Thank you for understanding what I’m saying though! I won’t get it done immediately if their both males, but I have good intentions on getting it done. & Are you kidding me? HAHA, I hope I’m still not here(My moms house) in ten years! Wherever I will be in ten years, they’ll hopefully have free roam of my house/apartment and are spayed.

As for my moms, I’ll be here for at least two more years, even if it came down to that, I wouldn’t mind sense it’s truly not that long.

I didn’t see your second post either… Sarita commented on something else too, I couldn’t tell if she was getting kind of frustrated with me haha. I didn’t think disrespectful, I just didn’t want her to think I was! I just posted that so she could hear me out a little.

I don’t know of low cost neuter programs in Ohio, but I’ve never really searched either. I spayed my female for about $220 6 years ago. I have never neutered a male as our boy was already fixed when we adopted him. I would recommend you make some phone calls and get quotes from vets.

Just for pricing references, I got Femto “spayed” (which turned out to be more like a neuter because he was hemaphrodite-ish) for $325 last year in upstate NY. That was the cheapest quote for a spay I could find here, but there isn’t a lot of competition since most of the vet offices here have a partnership and fixed prices.

If you have any rabbit rescues in your area you can contact them and see if they know of any low cost options. Other than that you’ll have to call around and get quotes. If you have transportation don’t forget to call surrounding areas too. Locally a neuter is $195 for me but if I drive 45 minutes I can get my bunnies neutered for $65.

Just to re-iterate what’s been said, this forum is really wonderful. People wouldn’t be giving advice if they didn’t want the best for your bunnies. I don’t think anyone was rude, just responding to the information you’d given up to that point.

Right nows just a bad time, even if I could go to surrounding places my parents wouldn’t take me. But it will get done when I get my license soon!

Anyways, no, no one was. Big misunderstanding lol.

I understand that you’re unable to afford the surgeries right now. My suggestion was more along the lines of doing the legwork now so you’ll have an idea of how much it will cost you. This would give you a goal as you save up for it, etc…

Really the most important thing vet wise, at this point, is to get them in and sexed properly to make sure neither is actually female.

So all you guys that are super PRO get spayed, I’m super excited!
A rescue just gave me one application, and they could help me get one boy fixed for something I can afford NOW! So I hope they approve Jack. I picked him because he’s older and his hormones are CRAZY. Haha, my other one is kind of fat and lazy, and not interested in what he wants to do (Is matured though)… So I might do the unrecommended thing and a month after his procedure try to bond. If it doesn’t go well, no biggy… My car is fixed and I’m job hunting, it’ll get done in no time! Thanks guys! Both my rabbits are now on their way to getting fixed one way or another!

That’s really great! I’m glad you looked around and found something that could help you.

Again, it’s a terrible idea to bond a neutered to a unneutered rabbit. It’s not just “unrecommended” it can be dangerous. Intact rabbits are hormonal and not predictable. Even if they seem to be getting along and be bonded it can change is a split second. This could happen when you’re not home and one or both rabbits could get end up seriously injured or dead.

If you’re planning on getting them both neutered, why not just wait until then to bond? That’s the safe and responsible thing to do.
