I know this question is not on bunnies, but it is a bunny issue. (kind of) My dog keeps barking whenever we leave and it might stress my bunnies out. Have anything helpful to do/ ( i asked this on here because i thought maybe somebody has a similar issue with their other pets, so maybe they know what to do?) Thx i can understand if no one knows since after all this is BinkyBUNNY.com LOL

Well it depends why your dog is barking. Is it separation anxiety? There are doggie calming products you could try. Or you could give them a special toy/treat that keeps them occupied as you go out the door (and beyond).

That’s a bit of a challenge, … some dogs never seem to learn not to bark when they are left. You could always try one of those collars designed to spray citronella when the dog barks (although someone I know used one on her Golden and it loved it, started barking to “get a fix”), but a lot of people including dog trainers have had good results with them.

I needed it for a very different reason but it might work for you too, I bought a Kong Stuff It Ball (or the name is very close to that, might not be right on), and my Shepherd loves it! I bought one for my Mother’s over active small dog (dear only knows what is in him, probably Terrier and Chihuahua, that boy Never stops!) and he adores it. You fill it with treats, and you can (its a good idea) smeer a little something like peanut butter (or they sell pastes liver and such) inside it along with some biscuits or the like and hand it over. Takes them some time to work the goodies out (and that’s why the soft stuff like peanut butter is great because its tricky licking the inside clean) it can keep them occupied for hours. (Depends on the dog of course.) I was worried since my Shepherd is truly not food oriented but he can’t get enough of it. And after a year of his “Playing” with it its still in good usable condition, … and that is a true testamony to its durability! Point is chances are if it doesn’t solve the barking problem it most likely wouldn’t be a waste of money anyway.

But think he does need to be distracted/occupied when you leave, or (not as attractive) punished (as in the collar) for the barking. Probably trying to train him not to bark by repeating the routine won’t be helpful since you are sending the opposite message from the one you want him to get; you leave, he barks, you come back in, … you’ve given him what he wanted in the first place. I know and you know you planned to come back in all along, but he doesn’t know that.

Good luck and I hope someone else has some more helpful ideas for you.

I would add a suggestion to be sure you aren’t fussing over your dog when you leave. This increasese their anxiety. Just go. However, sounds like you need to call a kennel or somewhere that has training facilities. People are often happy to give out some free advice about problems like this. Good luck.

My dog knows that when i put my shoes on, grab my purse, my sister grabs her keys, things like that etc., he knows we’re leaving and starts barking. I think he wants to with us because he likes to stick his head out of the car window. We tried numbing him on the “triggers” (things that make him start to bark) by doing it over and over again. But i dont think hes picked up the concept

Does he get any kind of treat when you leave? I like to leave my dog with a kong filled with some peanut butter and kibble so he associates me leaving with something positive. He still barks for a little bit once he has finished the kong, but it helps a lot.

If you think it’s bothering the bunnies, can you put him in another part of the house? My dog stays in my bedroom while we’re gone, and the bunnies have the dining room on the other side of the house (and on a different floor) so they aren’t bothered by any barking he might do.

There are ways to try to break your dog from that habit. I do not know the specifics, but basically, you leave/go outside for like a couple minutes, and increase the time, all the while reinforcing good behavior.

In this first video, you could try, if your dog doesn’t use a crate, you could just use the door you leave the house from instead of the crate.

I stuff my dogs’ kongs with peanut butter and freeze them. Makes it even more challenging for them to lick it out and takes them much longer! When a dog expends mental energy they also get physically tired, so maybe your dog will be too tired to worry and bark. Good luck!
