That’s hair in the poop. He must be ingesting a lot of hair. Is he shedding? You’ll need to take precautions so that he doesn’t ingest too much hair. Grooming everyday. After grooming, run your wet hands over him, this gets a lot of loose fur off that would otherwise be licked off and ingested. Too much fur can cause a blockage.

Definitely hair in the poo as LPT said. Every time we see one of these we give them a good brushing down. Simba kept passing these and I believe it was the fur balls he was building up that sent him into stasis a few months ago. I would brush him down very well for the next few days so he’s ingesting as little hair as possible.

Too much hair is being ingested. If you’re bunny is shedding, you need to groom him really good. Try to get him to eat more hay too.

If grooming is tricky you might want to try some grooming gloves. My cat doesn’t like to be combed (or to sit still much) and I got a great (and very inexpensive) pair on http://www.well.ca. They are soft and flexible, very gentle to use. They work very well lifting the hair and since its a glove you can just stroke more or less normally. My cat loves it, and it might be easier then trying to use a regular brush or comb. Just a thought.

Wow, our bunnies pass this type of strings of poo regularly no matter how much we groom them! I thought it was ok, and now I’m in Dubai, and the bunnies with my mother who is afraid to groom them. I urged her to try and get some grooming done by sneaking the comb in while the bunnies are in the cage relaxing. Needless to say I’m freaking out now! Do you think these type of strings of poo are always a sign of danger of blockage? Our bunnies have long and thick fur… uuugh

Nelli – Rabbits are going to get them from time to time. It is pretty common. As long as they are passing through, they are okay. The pearl poos are not necessarily dangerous themselves. I mean, at least it is a sign that the fur is passing through. They could be seen as a risk though. If you’re bunny has them on a regular basis, there is the possibility the fur could eventually cause a blockage. I wouldn’t be overly worried though. Hay is a good way to keep everything moving.

Some people swear by papaya supplements. I don’t know how effective they are though. I suppose it doesn’t hurt.

My bunnies would never let me brush them, if they had the ability to run away. That’s why I groom them on the table. I put a towel there and they sit quietly. Make sure to never leave bunny alone on the table, not even for half a second. Make sure you have all your grooming supplies ready before you put bunny on the table.

Sometimes when I see a lot of loose fur sitting at the tail end of my bun (after 5-10 minutes of petting), I just reach for a lint roller! It’s a great tool to use after grooming too because the comb can’t catch fur floating in the air like the sticky tape can. Nugget doesn’t mind it at all, in fact, he seems to like it. Silly bun knows I’m doing him a huge favor.

How is buddy doing with his hay eating? Are you having much luck with the grass?
Buttons is hard to groom. Rather than groom for an hour a week I try and do 5-10 minutes up to twice a day (he HATES sitting still for very long) but I’m finding less fur around and in their poop

I find running damp hands over them helps remove loose fur. The zoom groom brush would be similar to the grooming gloves. Maybe you’ll have better luck finding those?
I get in an empty bathtub with the rabbit to groom them when they’re shedding badly.

When you see poop like this again, pull it apart to check it is actually hair.
At first glance I thought it might be hay. I only say that because I have seen whole hay pass through undigested with my rabbit Jersey. Like Buddy, she is not an avid hay eater. She doesn’t chew food with her molars. If you do see this, I’d strongly suggest Buddy does have something happening with his teeth. Especially given his troubles with stasis.

Have you had a dental check up of Buddy lately? Is Buddy eating the Readigrass hay and nothing else? Or has he stopped eating hay all together?

As for the papaya tablets. I have heard of some of the members on here using them. I don’t have personal experience with them. I give my buns the Oxbow Digestive Tablets. They love them. They seem to help but it’s not a massive difference. When I notice my buns having massive digestive issues I will feed them fresh papaya to help.

It may be teeth issues. The Readigrass hay may be the easiest thing for him to eat. Or maybe he just likes the taste of the Readigrass the best and is just being picky. ;P Most likely Buddy is just being picky. =]
