› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Bad day at the vets, and questions for those who have bunnies with dental issues
So we had a vet appointment today because it looked like Kahlua had a cataract developing (which could be indicative of EC) and Ruperts eye has been wet.
This was all around no fun, but good news for Kahlua-it’s an ulcer on her cornea-common in head tilt and easy to treat.![]()
Rupert however has no signs of infection and she’s worried it’s dental. We’re trying eye drops, since he doesn’t do well on antibiotics at all (re: disgusting swamp bum) and we’ll see, but she couldn’t get a good look at his teeth because Rupert was impersonating a T-rex,
bit us both several times and ruined four of the covers that go on that light magnifying gizmo that goes in their mouth. ![]()
Additionally he has two very small cataracts she could only see with her light thing; so good that that’s not indicative of infection, just normal aging, but gawd-can’t we get a break!?![]()
Question-those who’ve had dental issues-I’m talking abscess and molars, what was your treatment, did it recur, how hard was recovery from the procedure? What it sounds like my option is, is a big surgery, going in from the side of the face…and I’m not sure how I feel about doing that to him….![]()
Thanks, vibes always appreciated, I give charitable receipts for loads of vibes ![]()
{{{Kahlua & Rupert}}} Some “stay positive” {{{vibes}}} for you also!
Is Kahlua much of a groomer? Could she have been Keeping his eye clear before?
I’m hoping there isnt tooth troubles and you can get away with a tear duct or sinus flush. Prob silly qu but is vet going do X-rays?
Is it only oral abx Rupert doesn’t do well on?
Pen-g shots are the best in my experience for dental abscesses – nothing else seems to penetrate.
Sorry you had a bad visit.
I know how awful it is to be dealing with more than one pet health problem.
Do you have an appointment for the vet to go in and have a better look in Rupert’s mouth?
I had to laugh that he destroyed 4 of the mouth pieces. What a little rascal.
How old is Rupert now?
Thanks for the vibes. We’ve been having a rough go. And our internet is down so I’m on my phone.
For Rupert were trying drops but she said if it’s dental we’ll need to go to a special clinic equipped to do proper xrays with small attachments so we just don’t know. But from what she said, if he needs his molars filed they’ll go in through the side of his face.
I’m wondering if we just don’t have good bunny dentists- for those who’ve had dental done-was it invasive surgery?
Oh and not sure his age but I’ve had him 5.5 years now-wow. He was an adult when I adopted him. But his body type now and cataracts…. I’m guessing he’s quite senior now
Trimming molars is not invasive and it’s not really even surgery.

I’m not sure if I’m understanding properly. Your vet thinks possible abscess and/or molar root overgrowth? If this, I’m confused as to what they’d be filing. They’d possibly go into side of the face to clean out abscess but I thought extracting the problem teeth (if possible) was the usual course of action?
Jelly had dental abscess on his lower jaw so that was less invasive really. He recovered great both times they’d opened it and cleaned it out. Doesn’t look pretty but heals up super fast!
I’m not really sure what’s involved with the maxillary teeth…
I imagine its more complicated because your dealing close to nasal ducts and the eye cavity.
Well we don’t know what the issue is but she said possibly dental, and that the surgery is invasive and they go in through the side of the face (why she’s not comfortable doing it)-I was certain that lots of members had molars filed and that it wasn’t an invasive surgery, just a sedated dental. I’m thinking a surgery that goes through his face-well yikes!
With Jelly-did they go in through the mouth or through his face?
Maybe you’re thinking of molar spurs on the visible portion of the tooth? That is just done under sedation.
Jellys abscess effected 3 lower teeth and they didnt think taking them out would be wise. They went in where the bulge was on the jaw line. The body encapsulates the abscesses, building cartilage and eventually bone around it. The vet had go through some thinnish walls that already started forming to find more abscess. It’s was like 3 separate capsules.
If Rupert has developed molar spurs then its possibly age related. They form when the whole tooth started to move out of alignment. They think its due to change in bone integrity. So spurs form on the crown portion because normal wear is no longer occurring. And the upper root can start to impinge on the ducts & nerves in the face.
With movement there are also spaces created around the root. Sometimes normal bacteria present takes advantage here and infection forms resulting in abscess.
If you don’t get a result from the eye drops, X-ray is probably your next best bet. Establish whether the teeth are involved.
From there your vet can use them to consult with other professionals if not confident about how to treat. You’ll also have them too if you decide to seek second opinion elsewhere.
I was reading how the duct from eye to nose takes some turns that narrow it somewhat. So it can be prone to blockages at these points. It might be worth trying warm compress on the eye and some massage underneath to see if it helps flow. Nothing to lose in trying.
: )
ETA: sent you a PM
Thanks Jersey!!!
You know a blockage wouldn’t be so bad, maybe we try a flush just in case…He seems just great, aside from his cataracts which now that I’m inspecting are easily visible though small.
I feel much better hearing about other dental -thank you both for sharing
Kahlua is probably oh-95% now! She’s still a little down tilted and does a funny thing with her right paw, holds it far back when moving, but she is motoring around when I let her out, Sorry we’re in the middle of selling our house, starting a new job, planning a wedding, preparing to show a horse, building a fence, and I haven’t found a moment to upload her before and after, but they are coming to work on our internet this week so hoping I can do that soon! I’m pretty ecstatic about her progress, and Rupert is still eating well, recheck on the 18th
My goodness, you are going through it aren’t you kiddo? (((((((((((((((((((((Huge hugs)))))))))))))))))))))
I hope everything works out and settles down soon. I am very well versed in sudden and total upheaval these days so please let me know if you want a ear to bend.
My thoughts and vibes and prayers are with you all. xxxx
I can’t thank you all enough-all the support is amazing. I’m probably being sensitive, but it seems like people I tell in ‘real life’ have their eyes glazed after about four seconds of me talking, ask dumb questions like ‘aren’t there medication for that’ (i.e. can”t you just fix it) or ask about costs incurred and flip when they see what I spend…it’s disheartening and just makes it harder. I’m so so so so grateful to have the support of you all!!!
I talked to the referral clinic though we’re waiting to do a referral to see if the drops work…I just wanted to discuss. The vet who does rabbit dentistry is out, but his assistant tech emailed me and was wonderful; it sounds like if it’s not a huge major thing, they just sedate for xrays and do the work right there-there is no diagnosis, book, procedure, it’s done in one.
So while we’re not sure if it’s dental, it’s not definitely surgery -which really I was worried about. QOL is huge; I don’t want to put him through something huge, but this sounds very minor.
We don’t know it’s dental so we’ll play it by ear, but I think I’ll go forward with the referral and see where we end up!
Thank you Mimz-I will most definitely bend your ear-it’s been a hard year and I could use a shoulder ![]()
