Belle is already noticeably happier when barney is around, as she was kept very secluded and away from any other buns after surgery to remove her leg I think she was really lonely! Barney and her have been interacting through the bars of her cage, Barney was castrated 2 weeks ago so I know I must wait another 2 weeks before letting them 8alone enough that he could mount her. I was just wondering whether I could start the first stages of bonding them, as long as I absolutely ensure there can be no mounting? I am terrified that Barney would hurt her, he’s sooo gentle with me but buns are different when it comes to other bunnies! I just want her to be happy, she can barely walk at all at the minute so I really think getting her bonded and up and about would help! She is only 16 weeks, so not neutered – and she couldn’t withstand that surgery currently even if she was old enough.

Thankyou so much for any advice

I wouldn’t really put them together until she’s spayed. You could start the pre bonding stuff like switching around litter boxes, stuffed bunny surrogates, etc…

Any progress you seem to make now in bonding has a good chance of being set back once she’s spayed.

I wouldn’t allow them to be together until she is also comfortable with her one leg and has learned to adjust with using three legs well. That way she can get away of need be easily.

But since they are interacting well through the bars I’d continue allowing that. But do not put them together until you see her comfortably and easily hopping around and until she gets spayed as when her hormones come to play it could all change or the bond may break when she comes back from a spay operation. But what you’re doing, allowing them to interact through the bars, is ok

Have you put her in an xpen yet or somewhere she can try and practice walking? Preferably a place with good traction like a carpet as fleece blankets on a hard surface can move when she is trying to hop and knock her balance a little off. I’m sure she will figure it out and adapt as necessary given time how long ago did she lose her leg?

Ok, thanks for the replies guys! It will be quite some time before I can bond them in that case as she is only 4 months old and would need another month after surgery before bonding? Yeah I have had her out lots to walk around, been practicing some physio with her – it’s just so pitiful when she falls on her face! I’m determined to get her up and about though, it wont do her any good for recovering just sitting there She only lost her leg 3 weeks ago so she’s not used to it
