I thought it would be fun to start a thread on what veggie I should introduce to my bunny next
currently he is only on green lettuce and I know it’s just a matter of opinion on what veggie should go next but what do your bunnies really enjoy? Also should the second veggie be a high oxic (not sure I spelled that right) acid veggie since I’m feeding him a low one now?
It can really be any of the bunny safe veggies but I’ll vote for Kale or Cilantro. My bunnies love both of them.

Kale sounds good
he’s munching happily on his lettuce right now so he won’t get the veggies today (thought I’d mention that)
My bunnies ADORE kale. When I feed the bonded quartet veggies – they will all dig through, find a piece of kale, and run with it to different corners. It’s hysterical!
I say kale or endive! ![]()
is kale one of those that are high in the oxic (I can’t actually remember what the word is) acid veggies?
Nope!!! Kale can be controversial sometimes. It’s not high in oxalic acid. But it can be high in calcium so usually we only feed about 1/3 amount of veggies as kale. Just as a precaution – but my bunnies have eaten it as 1/2 their salads before and we’ve never had any problems. Excess calcium is excreted in the urine though. It’s not a problem unless your bun is prone to urinary problems.
I usually give Caleb 2 big leaves of green lettuce (my boyfriend and I weighed him last night and he was about 3 pounds). When we ripped up the green lettuce to measure it it was just over a cup of veggies, so the kale should only be one leaf? oh wait will I just have to substitute one leaf of lettuce for one leaf of kale so he would get 1 leaf of kale and 1 leaf of lettuce?
That would work fine – unless he has a bad reaction to it (no different that any vegetable) you’re fine. It’s more of a problem in old rabbits when their urinary tracts aren’t what they used to be
All my buns get call (5 of them!) and none have a problem with it.
Here is a great House Rabbit Article explaining it –

right
thanks so much tan he’s becoming such a big bunny. I hope he’s not overweight for his age….he’s about 9 months (off by a couple weeks maybe)
Oh that doesn’t sound overweight at all. I may be incorrect but I believe Holland Lops tend to get up to around 4 lbs. I believe 3-4 is very normal for a Holland.
I just had to giggle also at you saying he’s big! All mine are between 2-5 lbs. And when I volunteer at the shelter with the 10+ pound rabbits I’m reminded how small my little guys really are!
LOL that is funny, now i feel silly
i would love to have a 10 pound bunny I just don’t have the space right now
I love big animals, my dog that I want is a great dane but I can’t afford the cost (health and otherwise) right now so I’ll have to wait on that one. I am going to get a rough collie puppy at some point next year hopefully
I chose the herding breed because it has less chance of killing the poor little bunny. I will not leave them a lone together ever just so you know.
I want a large rabbit also but we don’t have the room for one either! I want a Flemmie soooo bad and have vowed to get one when we move to a bigger place and can have an official “bunny room”!
Lots of members on here have dogs and buns that co-exist peacefully. Like any animal they need a proper introduction and supervision.
HOLY GOD that rabbit is HUGE!!! it’s like a dog wow now I want one. lol maybe a slightly smaller giant breed though
i will make sure that they will have a good introduction and supervision, I will ask on here though when the timing is more right now to do a proper introduction. Also the breeder I picked has a bird and cats and the dogs/puppies get along with them.
I’d also at some point try snow peas and pepper ![]()
I can’t get ANY of my buns to try pepper, Snowytoshi. Make sure it’s only bell peppers though! Nothing hot!
I’ve never tried snowpeas but dang… they turn their noses up at everything! LOL. Maybe I’ll hide pieces in their salad next time.
I’ll try bell peppers when the kale goes good
I just got back from getting more lettuce and got some kale (washed it all and put it in some sealed containers) can they eat the stems of the kale (it seems like a stupid question I know but those stems are so long)? also can they eat grapefruit? i gave him a small piece of kale just to see if he would eat it and he didn’t even hesitate like he did with the lettuce he ate it all up
GREAT call guys on the kale.I also got a salad bowl for him (it’s too heavy to tip over but he’s only going to get it for his salad and then I’m going to take it out of the cage)
It used to be recommended that kale be fed more sparingly but nowadays its considered okay everyday
I usually chop off the bottom stems because my bunnies don’t eat just the stem without leafy parts attached.
I wanted to add that I used to buy kale by the bundle but in my area it’s cheaper to by a pound of it chopped/bagged than it is to buy a smaller bundle.
Something to keep in mind if kale is expensive in your area if he ends up liking it ![]()
I got a big bundle for 1.99
the lettuce was more expensive lol I cut off the bottom stems because there was so much. can they eat grapefruit?

Paige turns her nose up at pepper too
They all love snowpeas though!
I would see if he will eat the bottom stems. I kept tearing all the leaves off the stems and giving them the leaves…. and finally realized they liked the stems to one day when I gave them to them so now I don’t even bother ![]()
I already threw them out
there are still stems on the leaves but they were just so long I cut off the bottom bottom stems lol can bunnies eat grapefruit tan?
The BB fruit/veggie list says “Grape fruit, leaves, and vines” so I’m not sure if that means only the leaves and vines? Or if the fruit is okay too?
hmmmmm….well I won’t chance unless I know for sure it’s safe so I just won’t give him any. He’s happy with bananas, apples, and oranges at the moment anyway
soon I want to introduce bell peppers but I’m going to wait until he is settled with the kale. It’s weird it seems like his salads would be good salad that my boyfriend would gladly eat so I hope he doesn’t start sneaking some of his salad away lol. He just said he would get Caleb a special bunny chair so they can both sit at the table and much on salad at the same time
if that happens you can bet I’ll put a video of it on here
I think it means like Grapes (their fruit, leaves, and vines). I don’t think it’s okay to feed grapefruit. It’s so acidic!
I missed the space in between “grape” and “fruit”. Haha. Thanks for clearing it up TL!
I say that because if you look at the other fruits listed… it lists the fruits then, fruit, leave, stem, ect.
For example:
Blackberry fruit, stems, leaves
Grape fruit, leaves, vines
Blueberry fruit
See what I mean?
Haha! Sorry – I posted the above to demonstrate what I was trying to say not realizing you had already commented!
Oh! That makes a lot of sense. I see what you mean.
ok no grapefruit but grape fruit is ok LOL thanks for the example tan
