Some background:
Monty had calluses on his hocks when we brought him home (about a year ago). They were fine for a long while and then a couple months back one of them started to bleed. We took him to the vet and they gave us a cream and some antibiotics. They healed up fine but the calluses remained.
Now:
We have laid down snoozy beds and fleece in his habitat. There’s probably an 1″ + in padding . Last week I noticed some of the callus coming off. No blood or anything it was like new skin underneath. Last night after his bonding session he hopped around on some non-padded floor for about 2-3 minutes before we noticed some blood. We looked at his feet and it wasn’t too bad just a tiny bit of blood (It wasn’t actively bleeding) around the edge of the callus. So we cleaned him up and applied his ointment (it has anti-bacterial stuff in it) and he seems fine. Not in pain or anything
I’m going to call the vet tomorrow morning to get advice. My question is for anyone else that’s dealt with hock issues in their bunnies. Does it ever end? Do they “get better” or is it always a problem? I don’t mind dealing with the issue but I’d like to know what to expect in his feet future.
Another question, keeping his habitat padded isn’t a problem but the main house isn’t carpeted and that’s where they excersise. Would putting some beds/soft rests around be enough to help? I’d hate for him to just keep injuring himself whenever he wants to play. It would be hard to try to pad the whole house >.<
Any advice appreciated!
