        After spending some time at the vet today we recieved some distressing news. Gizmo’s respiratory infection is probably the result of a couple of abcesses in his jaw below the roots of his molars. untill he can get in there to see how bad the infection is in the jaw we wont know how many of the teeth can be saved. Gizmo is in no pain right now, and there is no emergent rush for the surgery. Which is good because we are going to have to come up with $800 for the bill. This is one of the reason’s I get so mad at people who don’t feed their rabbits corrrectly. these abcesses were cause by only feeding this poor bunny pellets and no hay! worse case sinareo is that he looses all his molars and will have to eat critical care the rest of his life. and unfortunatly because this was caused before we got him it is not covered by pet insurance. but that is ok I will come up with it somehow!!! I refuse o let this bunny suffer anymore, he has been through to much!!! and is too sweet to let him surcum to infection. he is eating and pooping and drinking normally so this is a good sign, but this is a hard surgery on bunnies to recover. so please keep Gizmo in your prayers.

          Is it all his molars? My rabbit Bobby had the same situation – he was dumped at a guinea pig rescue because he wasn’t eating (or at least that is what they suspect) – the owners just dumped the poor guy in his cage and left him.

          He has no bottom left molars and had a severe abscess – ask the vet about pen-g shots as these are about the only things that can help an abscess and you can do these yourself. You do have to keep the pen-g refrigerated but that’s no big deal and it’s not an expensive medication.

          He does have to have regular molar trims due to the loss of those molars – and he kept losing a few of the molars even after the abscess cleared.

          Vibes to Gizmo and ask the vet about pen-g shots.

                Many, many ((((((Health Vibes for Sweet Gizmo))))). Poor little bun. Once again, Bullrider, I have to stress how wonderful you are. You really come through for bunnies. They need more people like you.

                And I can certainly sympathize with expensive vet bills. We don’t have insurance either and it’s sometimes a struggle to pay for all of the vet bills. We go without so our animals can be healthy. But it’s worth it for all they give us in return.

                  Pen-g shots are penicillin procaine shots.

                                {{{Gizmo!}}}
                                I agree about giving the pen G a go. It really isn’t terribly expensive for a full bottle and rabbits can do well on it. (Injected). I had Jelly on 3 shots a week along with an oral med for his dental abscess.

                                I sympathize bullrider. These type abscesses are problematic. I think the initial cost is high with X-rays, cultures and surgeries. But once under control, it’s more of a maintenance thing and the expense eases.

                                I had 3 different vets tell me these things don’t usually fully resolve unfortunately. I’m not meaning to be negative, just letting you know to be prepared. It may be a life long treatment for Gizmo. These rabbits can go long periods with things under control and you’d be amazed at how well they do. : )

                                My hope is you have much success in the initial treatment and can catch a break!!

                                If there is going to be surgery and cleaning out of the abscesses, ask that there is a culture if the pus done – preferable before he goes on antibiotics.

                                Good to hear the family and bun family are safe. Let us know if you’d like BB-ers to help brainstorm on ideas to fund raise for Gizmo.
