› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Vibes for Otto
Otto needs some healthy bunny vibes today. He didn’t want to eat last night or this morning and is looking generally uncomfortable. He’s never stopped eating before, so I’m worried about him.
We got a decent amount of critical care into him this morning, and by the end he actually ate a few bites of lettuce and pellets that we had sitting out. It was like he was saying, “Fine, I’ll eat this darn lettuce if you just leave me alone!” Haha.
I made an appointment with the vet for tomorrow at 9am. I wanted to give him a chance to come around on his own since he was trying to eat a little and would take treats.
Hopefully it’s just a little gas and not a big deal! Hannah goes through this type of thing about once a year and I’ve learned to give CC and wait it out a little, but Otto’s never done this before.
Oh no, vibes for little Otto. I really hopes he’s okay – keep us updated.
Have the vet check his teeth.
I hope that it’s just gas {Otto} feel better
Get well soon Otto!
(Vibes)
Thanks to everyone for the healthy vibes!
Sarita, we’ll definitely check his teeth. He’s never had an issue before and had a check up about 6 months ago, but with hollands it’s always a worry. Hannah had spurs at 3 years old despite no previous problems (and 3 years later it hasn’t returned).
I go home at lunch to check on the dog, so I’ll offer him some veggies and see if he’s feeling better. I’m hesitant to take him to the vet today, because I’ve done that with Hannah and paid $500 for them to find nothing, and have her start eating a few hours after getting home. If he stops taking treats I’ll probably see if I can get him in today though.
I agree to wait – this happens to me quite a bit too and many times it corrects itself, what ever it is.
Sending vibes to you and Otto!
Seems like these buns are just stressing all their parents out this month!
Feel better Otto!
Our buns are just laying it all on us this month, thats for sure.
I hope that Otto will start eating normally and be back to his regular self very soon.
Let us know how Otto is feeling after his appointment! Hope it’s nothing serious. Do you have simethicone on hand to help if it’s gas related?
Oh no…((((((healing vibes)))))) for Otto!
Good grief, what is happening to our bunnies? Everybun is getting sick lately.
Thinking of you and hoping for a good outcome! xx
Lots of vibes for Otto!
Hope it’s gas.
((((((Otto))))))
Is he feeling better now?
Otto is still really uncomfortable this morning and hasn’t eaten. It’s hard to tell if he’s popping since there are two of them, but he sat in the litter box most of the night and the only poo I found was some wet cecal type things strung together with hair or hay. We’re leaving for the appt in a few minutes, so I’ll update later on what the vet says.
{{{Otto !}}}
Back from the vet. They did xrays and his stomach is very distended with gas, but there were poops moving along too, so he’s not completely in stasis. His teeth did have small spurs, so the vet took care of those, though they may or may not be part of the problem. They did sub-q fluids and she sent us home with metacam and cisapride for motility. We’re going to keep doing the critical care and do simethicone too. If he’s not better tomorrow, we’ll take him back for more fluids, but she thinks he should be ok in a day or two.
Interestingly, the xrays showed that he has fairly severe arthritis in his spine, and fairly bad hips (I guess you’d call it dysplasia). He’s never been great at cleaning himself “down there” and this could explain why. She said it’s worse than she would expect on a 4 year old rabbit, so we’ll have to keep an eye on it as he ages. He’s always been very lazy and not much of a jumper, so I would guess this has always been a problem for him. He doesn’t seem to have trouble doing his daily activities though and getting onto the second floor of the Maze Haven.
So that’s my update! We also got suckered into buying a new small animal specific Furminator. We have the blue one, for cats, but it has never worked very well. They have a pink one now, that apparently this vet helped Furminator design. She let us try one out and it actually worked really really well, so we figured with how much we were already paying them we might as well get one. We definitely need to do a better job brushing Otto.
Oh wow! Lucky the arthritis was found then. (((Otto)))
Did you find the car ride helped at all? I’ve found it can move things a bit- probably relieves some gas…
Thanks, Jersey. Not sure if the car helped much. We’re trying to keep him moving around a bit though. It’s weird that his stomach didn’t feel distended last night, but it really does today.
I’m glad it was just gas and that they found the arthritis as well {Otto} hope he starts feeling better soon ![]()
Haha! Too funny… when we took Simba in for his last dose of sub-qs before we learned how to do them ourselves we got suckered into buying the pink Furminator while we were there also!
Simba seems to have been blocked up with some fur and I agree – it’s doing a FAR better job getting rid of his fur than our other brush.
More ((vibes)) for Otto! <3
Hopefully filing those teeth helped – some rabbits are super sensitive to spurs and the majority of the time this is the cause of the stasis.
Mango was diagnosed as well with arthritis at 4 years old – I think it must be fairly common for rabbits – maybe because of their delicate bones.
More vibes for Otto.
I hope the metacam & simethicone is helping him.

He started to eat on his own last night with little bits of hay and lettuce. We’ll keep up the meds and critical care, but I think he’ll be back to normal soon. Thanks for all of the well wishes!
Great news!
Glad he recovered so quickly ![]()

Good news!
Hope he continues to do well. ![]()
As of this morning he’s back to normal and no more force feedings 🙂 He was eating slowly and small amounts yesterday on his own, so we kept up the critical care, but he was obviously feeling better because he was very feisty.
At one point DH offered him pellets when he wouldn’t eat more lettuce and he dove in to the bowl. DH tried to take it away and Otto actually growled at him. lol Guess he was hungry!
LMAO…That sounds like Pip…it didn’t have to do with a dental, but we did have some pellets in one of those little panda cups that BB used to send free gifts from the store in and we made the mistake of letting Pip put her head in it. We tried to pull it away and she not only grunted at us but grabbed the cup with her raccoon claws and wouldn’t let go!
Glad to hear Otto is back to himself and eating well. Long may it continue!
Yay! Glad he is better! I was very worried for him
