Just brought home new bunny yesterday. I haven’t handled him yet, just letting him get accustomed to his new environment. I haven’t noticed him spraying yet but I’m sure it’s inevitable – he about 5 months old. When should I get him neutered? Is it better to give him some time to get comfortable before corralling him back in the carrier to go to the vet? Or better to get it done ASAP and work on developing a relationship afterward?

He’s definitely old enough to neuter, so I would recommend getting that done ASAP, and then let him heal and become comfortable without the hormones in the way. New rabbits tend to be on their best behavior for a bit, so you might be able to surpass any issues by moving ahead quickly.

What did the rescue say about him, do they not neuter rabbits before adoption?

When my little boy reached 6 months old I made an appointment with the vet to have him “done” but the vet asked me lots of questions about his behaviour, ie, is he spraying? Is he growling? Is he territorial/aggressive? To which all the answers were no, so she asked me why I wanted him done and put through an operation unnecessarily? He is now 10 months old and still shows no signs of maturity and he is still in tact, Obviously if he gets a “friend” I would need to have him done, but until then he can keep his bits!

Yeah some vets will only agree to neuter or spay an animal if it’s to help with behavioural problems… I’d have it done to my rabbit in order to have him get along with my cat better (and to stop trying to mate with her) and to stop pooping and peeing everywhere…. I guess because there’s risk for any surgery and unless there is some problem that is caused by the hormones then I guess vets don’t want to take that risk…

I would get it done as soon as possible as well – that way it’s done and you don’t have to stress about it yourself.
