Hi there my friend has a hamster and said she just cleaned the cage out completely and a few hours later the cage started to smell. They have been having problems with the cage smelling. They use carefresh bedding and clean it out with soap and water. I told her to try using white vinegar and water. Does anyone else have a hamster and no what the problem is?

Does the hamster have wet tail? Or does she seem perfectly healthy?

Wet tail is an infection that gives them a wet bottom. It is caused by bacteria and induced by stress. Symptoms include a bad odor, a continuously wet rear end, decreased appetite, lethargy, etc. Sometimes the only symptoms that are noticeable is the wet bottom and smell. Sometimes girl hamsters will smell a little more strongly than boys too. That is normal. But the smell shouldn’t be overpowering.
