We are meeting Foo’s new doctor today for her yearly checkup. We normally take her to the vet that’s associated with PetSmart to get her nails trimmed and have always been happy with the care they’ve given her during grooming. We’ve only taken her for that service, so we aren’t really established patients there yet, but I had asked questions last time we were there that the staff couldn’t answer for sure because their rabbit savy vet wasn’t there that day, and the next day, Dr. Fry called me back right after they opened to talk to me and answer my questions. I guess the fact that she called me back right away and we weren’t patiets there yet really made up my mind about taking Foo there, so now she has an appointment. We’re hoping that the new doctor will be able to answer some of the questions we have, namely the three big ones (how old is Foo, maybe offer a guess at what breed she is, and possibly venture a guess or do bloodwork to determine if the the little bugger has been spayed). So, I guess, wish us luck!

Foo’s having such a good morning, and is super happy today (We were snuggling and she kept oinking softly and purring) I almost feel bad ruining it with a trip to the vet, but we really wanted to get her in before we go to Hawaii to be 100% sure she’s healthy.

I’m confused, so your taking her to the Petsmart vet, or a different one.

          Are you moving to Hawaii?

I need to take my rabbits to a new vet soon too.

It’s Banfield Pet Hospital. I think at this location they just share the building with PetSmart, but aren’t actually associated with. They have all their own staff and receptionist separate from the store. People I know who’ve been their with rabbits have said that the doctor is really very good with them, and she’s the only truly rabbit savy vet in the area that’s affordable. No, we aren’t moving to Hawaii, we’re going for a week, and leaving Foo with a baby sitter, and taking her to the vet before we go is really going to alleviate some of the fear of leaving her for the first time while we’re gone, and she’s due for her yearly checkup anyway. So it all worked out.

First of all, since I finally got to meet her in person, I LOVE Dr. Fry. She was so nice and friendly and took an extra half hour after the appointment to just discuss things with us regarding having Foo spayed and was up front about the real danger of GI stasis after the fact. She currently has two bunnies herself and talked about her experiences with them as well. Foo has a clean bill of health, she’s gained a pound since we took her in as a stray, and is currently 4.5 pounds, which is ideal for her breed. Dr. Fry agreed that she looks like a dwarf-Dutch mix, which is what I had thought all along. Foo was friendly and warmed up after a while, by the end of the visit she was kicked out and relaxed on the exam table. Her teeth are in great shape and we were told she has good alignment so hopefully there won’t be too many problems further down the line. Dr. Fry did shave her belly while I heard her to look for scarring to see if she had been spayed before, and didn’t see any. Foo let me hold her during this, and let me hold her like a baby (which was just too cute for words!). There was one downside to the visit though- after shaving her and looking at her nipples, Dr. Fry did say it looked they had old, crusty milk on them (which she cleaned off), and said it was likely Foo has had a litter of kits. I’m completely disheartened by this, first because it means the people who had her before allowed her to get pregnant and then abandoned her AND because it had never crossed our minds that she could have had babies. So when we found her as a stray we didn’t think to look to see if there were any babies with her, and quite possibly could have taken them away from her. I’m sad for Foo to have gone through having a pregnancy so little (she was estimated to be a little over a year old, so she was real young when we found her) and I’m sad because we would totally have taken her kits in had we found them. So while the visit was excellent and my baby is in perfect health, I’m kinda grieving the loss of her babies (as irrational as that is)

That is great that you like your vet!

I can understand how you feel about the kits. She very well could have had them at her previous owners and after that decided they only wanted the cute baby’s and abandoned her then. I guess it will be hard to know.

I’m glad that you found a vet that you like. =] I’m sorry about Foo’s litter. It’s natural to grieve for the poor babies. I hope you have a great trip in Hawaii.
