› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Please help. My bunny can’t get up
Hi everyone, my bunny is only over a year old but he’s been having problems over the last couple of days. about 2 or 3days ago i started noticing that he was lethargic, and that his droppings were a lot smaller than usual. I started getting worried but i observed that he was eating and drinking well so i thought maybe this was just a phase considering it was pretty hot where i’m living right now (but he does have frozen water bottles to lean on and he’s in an air conditioned room at night). But then he started deteriorating. At first i noticed he kept trying to lean his head on a corner. He started hopping less and would just lie somewhere whenever i let him out of his cage. I told myself that i would observe any changes and if he doesn’t get better id take him to the vet immediately. But yesterday he got worse. He could no longer get up; his front legs were spread away from his body and he couldn’t seem to use them. He’s hunched over that way. I feel so bad for him. I called a vet to schedule a check up but he won’t be arriving until tomorrow. There are hardly any rabbit savvy vets in my country (philippines) so we’d have to wait. I amvery concerned about my bunny. The sad part is that he’s got a lot of spirit in him still; he keeps trying to get up but to no avail. He’s always been very energetic and it breaks my heart to see him like this. Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong with him and if there’s anything i can do to make him feel a tad better until i take him to the vet? I can only hand-feed him now and give him water from a tray because he can’t get up. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
What town/city are you in Alate, I found a rabbit savvy vet there for someone last year. Make the appointment with the other vet, also see if any vets near you are willing to call around the rabbit savvy ones and get advice. You could also try calling some of the directly to get input on what to do in the interim.
I live in makati city. I’ve called several clinics but they all only treat dogs and cats. ![]()

I just want to let you know he passed away a couple of hours ago
i was literally about to call vets in practice actually (i was going to take him to animal house tomorrow), when he started convulsing and he gasped for about three times and then he passed. He died in my arms because i never left his side ever since he couldn’t get up last night. I was whispering to him that if he can hold on until tomorrow, then he can wait and i’ll keep him as comfortable as possible, but that if he’s suffering too much, it’d be ok if he left me. I think he was just too far gone. I keep trying to think about what i did wrong for him to get sick that quickly, but i can’t think of any. The worst part is that he is only about to turn two years old this december, and i assumed he’d be in my life for a much longer time. It just about breaks my heart, but in a way i’m grateful that i was with him when he died and that i had the chance to say goodbye. i am consoled by the fact that he’s not suffering anymore, and that we had a lot of fun times together, albeit in a short time.
Thank you both so much for your help, though. I really appreciate it.
I’m really sorry.
Binky Free little one
My sincere condolences on the loss of your little one. It’s not your fault he was sick.

Binky Free little bun………. Sadly Alate when bunnies get sick they can go down hill very quickly and it is not possible to get the treatment they need if a vet isn’t available. There is no guarantee that getting to a vet early would have made a difference. Nothing you did made your bunny ill so please do not blame yourself.
This sounds very similar how my Jack passed away. He lost the ability to use his front legs and got splayed. Still tried to drink and eat but couldn’t swallow and he passed like an hour or so later it all happened rather quickly. I’m so sorry for your loss. Binky free little one ![]()

My condolances too, Alate.
I am so sorry for your loss. I am sure he knew he was loved as you obviously cared well for him and you were with him the whole time.
“Binky Free”. (We say for bunnies who have passed and they are now free of any pain)
I have to give a shout out to Roberta for trying to find vets in the Philippines in a hurry.
Helloworld!!
I’m sorry about your bunny.
I’m so sorry to hear that ![]()
Thank you everyone. I’m trying to stay positive these days and just think about all the good times i spent with him and admittedly it is very hard, but your messages help a lot because they come from people like you who understand the bond that arises between bunnies and their humans. Thank you, with all my heart. ![]()
I’m so sorry.
So very sorry to hear of your loss! I’m sure little bun enjoyed the love he/she got from you.
