I know clipping my last little ones was always a struggle, I never did manage to do it on my own, found it easier for me to hold and cuddle him while someone else clipped. Haven’t tried with my two new ones yet but expect I’ll probably stick to a variation of the same process. Size plays a role, my last one was so little, and these are both under four pounds, so much less to hold on too!

I will recite my favorite, very successful nail trim tip here. For those of you who have read it before (many times), find a snack and move to another post. I can’t say this enough because it really, really helped me with Sammy.
First, do not trance. Don’t flip bunny over because their backs are delicate and one squirm could result in heartache. A bunny burrito is good to use, or just firmly keep bunny on the floor between your thighs while you reach for each paw one at a time.
PRESS/PRESS/CLIP
You take a small nail scissors, get one nail between your fingers and press the scissor against the nail at the point you want to cut. DO NOT cut at first, just press it, press it again, then clip. If you are touching the quik and are too low so it may cause bleeding or pain, you bunny will jerk the paw away hard. Let this happen. It is a way to work with your bunny to help you know you are down too low. Resettle yourselves, start over, and pick a spot closer to the tip of the nail. Do this again. Do this each time for each nail. I say out loud “press, press, clip!” so that I will remember to do it. It works! The bunny feels it on the quik, but not very much when it’s only the nail. This yanking free is different than the general struggling, so trust your bunny to help you.
And a treat after finishing it all, or after each paw, is an excellent way to soften the experience with a reward.
Keep a small dish of corn starch, or a styptic pencil, handy in case you do draw blood.

RabbitPam has the perfect solution – also, with black tipped nails (three of my buns have nothing but black nails) and we only cut off the very tip. We cut at the point the nail begins to curve.

Rabbit Pam thank you for again sharing your favourite tip! Hope you keep repeating it whether or not older members have heard it before! I hadn’t and I’m very glad to now know it.

I am able to do Leopold’s back feet on my own. That is usually the most difficult. I will set him in my lap, place one hand around his chest, press his back into my stomach, and then gently roll him back (keeping him pressed into my stomach). He doesn’t struggle at all when I do this and his back feet pop up, ripe for the clipping. He has clear nails though, so I can clip clip clip in very little time.

I’ve read in a few places to clip the nails every 4-8 weeks (depending on how quick they grow) but I’m unsure of when to clip my rabbits nails. They’re weeks old now. Any advice on when to clip or pictures of nails when they’re ready for a trim?

Oh, wow! He’s stunning! Love his markings, they remind me of  horse facial markings. Love him!
