› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Gender change! Nugget isn’t a girl!
My little princess turns out to be a boy! It’s still really weird to look at Nugget and see a male rabbit, he’s got such luscious lashes!

Our story: When the dude brought Nugget home on Feb 3, he said the pet store’s “bunny expert” said Nugget was a 2 month old, pregnant Dutch female. None of those were true (pet stores know nothing about their animals). We’ve sexed our bunny on several occasions since then and always found that she was a girl. We looked at his bits a couple weeks ago and did not see any testicles, but a tiny pink sword that stuck out when we dug around his pee hole. It was so small, we didn’t think it was a penis. I had to google search “rabbit genitals” for reference pictures to see the difference (felt like a bunny perve), but again, no balls. I know it is very common to sex a bunny incorrectly at a young age because their balls do not descend until they are older. On top of that, males can retract their balls inside of their abdomen when they are in stressful situations such as lying on their backs for too long while humans poke at their genitals. We are lucky to have a rabbit that trusts us and allows any kind of handling without putting up a fight so he could be sexed correctly, but I know some are not as relaxed about it. I think this is good information to share for those that are new to rabbits (like me) and it is good to check young females every couple of months to see if they grew any balls and are actually a male. ![]()
Oh rabbits, they are such funny creatures and I’m still learning everyday thanks for my bunny and BB has been especially helpful! So I would like to give back. If anyone wants a pic of Nugget’s bits, I wouldn’t feel awkward in sharing
.
Sneaky devil!
Congratulations…? Lol
Great that he’s not pregnant!!
I say congrats because a neuter is a much less risky operation than a spay. And not as costly and not at all as long convalescence.
He’s very beautiful.
I KNEW it!!!
I love Nugget. At least you won’t have to change his name!
you could change it to ‘Nuggets’ temporarily,, or ‘Tuck’
Thanks everyone, I do feel like we got a new rabbit all of a sudden. It’s so bizarre, you don’t know how many times Eugene and I had to correct each other b/c we always refer to Nugget as a she/her. I also have always wanted a little male rabbit to bond with me b/c I felt like Nugget was more attached to Eugene. Well, my wish came true
. This ruins my future plans of getting a boyfriend named Truffles to bond with *my previous female* Nugget. But that’s far in the future… way after Nugget gets neutered.
Yeah, we can call him Nuggets now that he actually has two little nuggets hahaa. Eugene has started to call him Peter b/c he looks like Peter Cottontail, esp when he is periscoping. I’ll have to look out for a little blue shirt to make it official.
Glad I was not the only one calling him Nuggets. lol
A very apt name in hindsight. Pun intended.
This is pretty common here on BB. Definitely never trust the people at pet stores. IMO, they have no idea about anything to do with rabbits.
Nugget is beautiful, boy or girl.
Lucky you picked a unisex name and not something like “Princess” or “Annabelle”. A name change would add to the confusion. Also, hope you didn’t paint his room pink. ![]()
Nugget, Nuggets, Nugs… we couldn’t call him anything else b/c I think he knows his name now. My mom once asked me if I got the name from Chicken Nugget and I said, “No, she poops a lot and they look like nuggets.” She gave me an “ew” face and would give me an even bigger “ew” face if I told her we made his name plural b/c he grew nuggets and is a boy now. hahaha.
LittlePUffyTail- Thank you, I feel very lucky to own such a handsome rabbit. Yes, I agree that most pet stores don’t know that much about most of the animals they are selling. Most of them are stupid, young high school teens that just want to sell you a cute furry friend and/or get rid of their animals so they have room for more. Eugene took me to the pet store where he got Nugget from and this kid asked us, “You looking to get an Easter bunny for Easter?” I was still so disgusted that he asked us that. I told him we already have one and we’re just looking at the baby buns. He took out little gray dwarf bunny and put it in Eugene’s hand and said, “This little guy is my favorite, I really want him to go home with someone today.” Ugh, he was annoying and I just wanted to punch him. Needless to say, I will never purchase another bunny from a pet store even though Nugget was the best gift I’d ever gotten. I really want to adopt a good bun but have to wait until Nugget gets older and is neutered. Haha, and no he owns nothing that is pink.
Both of my buns are boys and they have a pink litter box. And their food bowl is purple. We knew they were boys from the beginning though. I think we just had a limited choice of colors when shopping for bunny stuff.
We went through this with our turtles, Fred. It’s not that we really thought Fred was a boy turtle, it’s just that we thought we would never find out one way or the other, so we might as well give them male names. One spring though, Fred and Barney did something that made it perfectly clear that Fred is a female turtle. Ever since I have to do an annual spring egg clean up.
You could still get him a boyfriend, its definitely possible to bond a pair of boys together ![]()
MB is right. I thought of that too.
Nugget(s) is an excellent name for a boy, and I think it’s better for a boy than a girl even. (And I love long eyelashes on boys – like Robert Downey Jr.’s.)
One of these days I expect someone to post a pix of their new cat that they got from a pet store with the super cool extra long ears and stubby tail.
I used to call it Spockie’s Toothpick. Easier to spot that than watching for balls.
What kind of rabbit is nugget! Looks just like my rabbit Alice
