Today I went to a historical park, and was there from about 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and there were two rabbits being housed together outside. And their enclosure had NO BOTTOM!!! They could dig their way out. All that they had in the cage was hay, and (really dirty) water.  Someone else said that they saw the rabbits with pellets once. What should I do?

Contact the management and mention you saw the rabbits and politely ask if they are aware that there have been considerable changes to the way that rabbits are cared for, offer your knowledge and ideas on how they can improve the situation. They may also have an email address that you can send some links and fact sheets to.

If you get no response or they tell you things are fine you could possibly enlist the help of a local rabbit rescue/shelter.

Okay, thanks. I’ll be back there in about a week anyways, so I’ll be able to talk to them.

They don’t have a website, so I’ll have to talk to them in person, or send a letter.

I forgot to mention that they are both REALLY fat because all the families feed them through the wire.

What should I ask them to do about the flooring situation?

Well for a start build a proper area for them that is large enough and has a boxed area with a wooden fllor off the ground. The wire enclosure only needs to have the wire sunk about 12 inches down to prevent digging out or they could bury mesh and inch under the soil so grass can still grow through but bunnies can’t dig out.

Not only is there the risk of them digging out. Predators can dig in.

I think a polite letter or chat with someone is a good start.

With feed, its possible they do get it daily but it’s not left out at all times as it could encourage rats.
I’m relieved to hear they at least have hay!

Thanks! I will do that. Is there anything I can do about families feeding the rabbits (besides the obvious “Please don’t feed the rabbits” sign)? I saw numerous families feeding the rabbits carrots. There is probably nothing I can do about the outdoors situation.
