I think you are doing all you can until the shedding stops.

Sometimes temperature change can be what triggers a moult, and just because he moults heavily out of his baby coat, he will not necessarily always have such an intense moult–much depends on the specific rabbit, breeding and climate conditions. I know one fellow fhought feeding bananas would help a rabbit hold onto a coat, slowing the moulting. I don’t know if that’s just an old wive’s tale. . . . For my part, I know I sound lazy, but over the years it seems like they always manage to leave more of their fur ON items like pillows or corners of their cages and it’s actually easier to clean the fur off of those items than it is to reach the bottom of the moulrtng. . . . On the other hand, my ex and I used to do “furricaning” with some of our rabbits– those that had obvious tufts. We would just sit outside in a chair and go through with our fingers, gently pulling out loose tuft by loose tuft and sorting out the small amount of matting going on (talcum powder or corn powder may be helpful with this) and letting it float away in the air (or rake up the yard afterward!) This is actually quite effective because one undercoat is replacing another undercoat so what is coming out is intermeshed with what is remainging. The direct finger work is very gentle but actually pretty efficient. Dirty duds and/or an apron highly recommended.

Instead of starting another topic, should I be concerned that we have had Foo for almost a year (it’ll be a year in June) and she hasnt shed at all, except for a few stray hairs here and there?

Kaiser just about finished his first seasonal molt! Patience is what I give as an advice, even as generic as it sounds. If it’s in the really bad stage, you can just brush him every hour or two, that’s what I did to keep it down. Though he doesn’t really like the brush all that much, so I resorted to pulling out loose tufts of hair (which is VERY effective). I find that rabbit hair is very fine, so some brushes may not pick it up as easily as just doing it with your hands. There isn’t much else to do! I don’t know if banana works, since Kaiser won’t touch it, but you can try!

And don’t worry about Foo. Kaiser was about 10 months before he molted. The seasonal molt is apparently the heaviest, and the one you might actually notice. I didn’t even realize when he changed from his baby coat! But he must’ve done, since he lost a lot of his mane! I think it may also depend on the weather where you live year round, and the breed of the rabbit.

I totally agree with Raindrops, hands do wonders and the hairs generally are too fine to be caught by most implements. THe one exception to that is the Furminator. However, working with that can be frustrating because it totally fills and has to be cleared off with just one brush through. You can’t do a continuous brushing and really set up a rhythm that the rabbit is comfortable with. Also, its rather hard shape is not that adaptable to all of the rabbits’ very shapely body.

I tend to put Thane in the bath and just get out as much hair as I can using a damp hand. Thane loves to moult. He has a gorgeous thick glossy white coat that goes everywhere!

It is really amazing how much rabbits differ in their attitude toward water and wet baths! Thane sounds absolutely beautiful. Is that him in your avatar? Wish I could see the coat more closeup.

Sounds like you’re doing everything you can. Sometimes sheds just seem to last forever.

@Sam’sMom, yeah that’s my little man! I wouldn’t give him a bath, I just sit him in there when it’s empty. It’s just easier to contain him there when getting all the hair off! It’s not really recommended that you give your bun a bath as far as I know!
