So I was talking via internet to the President of the Rabbit Rescue I work with about Sweet’s eye problem (long story short: she’s had infection like problems in both of them.  One is balding but we thought it was clear but apparently not so I’m calling the vet first thing in the morning)

Next thing I get a phone call from her and she asked if I was available. She said she just got contacted by a guy about a rabbit running lose in his backyard- his neighbor had left it when they moved. She said she was by my house and would swing by to pick me up (b/c I of course agreed to help).

So we get there and it was dusk. We go to his backyard (all the houses in this neighborhood have fences around each backyard but they’re old with holes of course) and we finally see it one house over. The guy that called us knew the neighbor well and said we could go in his yard (big issue with outdoor rescues). So we were about to and the poor bun just kept running. He made like he was going to run up to the President but then quickly darted off and heading towards busy road. None of us were in the shape to run after nor did we want to scare it more.

We finally found the bun in the backyard of the last house on the street. We waited a long time trying to get the permission of homeowner to go in backyard. He said yes and by the time we got to go in, he darted off again except this time he had a friend. So there’s TWO domestic rabbits running around. And the one we were sent picture of looks pregnant in the picture but not so much in real life so there’s worry there’s a nest. And if so is it in caller’s backyard or the last house on the street guy’s?

We didn’t have time to bring live trap so we left caller with carrier after searching all the path back with no success (we also ran out of light). The President is going to take a live trap to the guy tomorrow but we left firm instructions only to put it out when he could watch it and call us as soon as he spots rabbit in it so no predators can get to it. We’ll also be going back tomorrow but it’s just so sad. To come home empty handed. Knowing how cold it is right now- almost freezing tonight. I guess I’m just looking for some encouragement. I’m really worried they’ll get hit by a car or we won’t be able to catch them.

Oh FrankieFlash I’m so sorry! I bet the bun will stick around familiar surroundings. I hope you guys are able to find the poor baby!

Fingers crossed. Hopefully all the neighbours can make it a combined effort and find any nests if they are there too.

Good luck to you guys. I hope you find all the buns and that they are healthy and safe.

Thank you for trying to help these buns. ((((Safe Bunny Catching Vibes)))))) Hope the live trap catches them today.

I can relate to the difficulties. A few years ago I knew of 2 baby bunnies that were let loose on a horse farm. I went every morning around dawn for a week to try to catch them. Not easy and horribly stressful. I was only able to catch one as the other disappeared and I didn’t see him again despite me going for a few more days. I fear a fox got him. I was lucky to catch 1 on a 100 acre farm.

I hope you have a very rewarding experience in rescuing these bunnies. Keep us posted.

                  Thanks everyone for encouragement.

Turns out I didn’t get any sleep last night which made me decide, I’ll miss one class- no big deal. Then I called vet for Sweet’s eye and they gave me appt in middle of day so looks like I’m missing all my classes but at least I’ll be more awake for some rabbit wrangling today.

If we catch the buns, I was trying to think of a way to see if they had possible babies in the area. First is sexing them. Then if one has enlarged nipples, that means they’ve nursing, right? I’m sure the head of the rescue that I am working with knows all this but I hate to bombard her with silly questions.

When Pepper was feeding her oops litters she was like a furry cinder block with nipples. There is no mistaking a nursing Bun Mum. But then Pepper had the best of everything unlimited. It may not be the same for a Mummy Bunny on the run. Start getting the neighbours to check under bushes, in any exposed pipes, in debris piles or firewood. The less attractive the spot the more likely Mummy may have chosen it for exactly that reason.

We went back tonight and the neighbors were a lot LESS cooperative. A lot of them think they should be killed or left alone. One even made a comment to go as far as we’re just going to put them in a cage in a garage. I have no clue where that came from but I did my best to set him straight. Of course I had to be civil because if the bun was in his backyard again we want permission to go get it. It sucks having to be diplomatic with ignorant people who make comments like that.

We didn’t see the bun at all though. Only the original caller would let us have access to his back yard though. Tomorrow I’m going to take a live trap (one where it won’t hurt the guy) and show the caller how to set it up when he has time to watch it so he can call us asap if the bun goes in. I’m pretty much free tomorrow with just having committed volunteer time at the rescue so I’m the one running out there (other side of the city I live in).

I’m just amazed at how there are so many bad people in the world. But I am relieved there is a few, rare, goodhearted people out there that know nothing about rabbits but still believe in helping them (original caller).

I saw a pic of one of the buns in question on Facebook. He’s so cute. I really want him to be caught safe and sound.

He is adorable, yes. And really unique coloring in our opinion. We have no doubt that if we catch him, he’ll be adopted. Problem is catching.

                            UPDATE!

Orange bun was caught. There was mites and ticks all over him (the rescue has already started treatment). Looks like a little bit of mite damage on his ears too. We also found out he survived the whole winter out there which is amazing because MI has been super cold this year. We still worry there is another rabbit out there so we’re working on a plan with live trap again. They caught this guy with a fishing net very carefully. He’s very sweet from what I have been told. I’m waiting for him to be 100% cleared health wise so I don’t transfer anything to my guys to meet him. I wasn’t there on the day they actually caught him but that doesn’t matter to me as long as he doesn’t have to fear for his life anymore. He’s beautiful. There’s pictures up on the facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rabbit-Small-Animal-Rescue/174274495949100

What a gorgeous bun! Such dedication from you guys, and well done to those who caught him, hopefully he’ll be fine and dandy before long and you’ll find out all of his little personality 😀
