  I have searched high and low for a stainless steel litter pan because my Holland Lop likes to eat his plastic one. He (or she, it’s about time to find out really) is about 5 months old. He was litter trained immediately but after about 3 months had eaten a lot of his tray. I bought a new tray last week and I swear it’s halfway gone. I only bought this one after I couldn’t find a stainless steel one. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

  Is there enough hay in the litter pan? I know my boy Ian likes to chew on the litter pan if he doesn’t have enough. There is a biodegradable cat litter box called the WonderBox. It’s made out of recycled paper. It’s not a great solution but it may help with him not eating plastic.

  Harley actually recently started eating his litter tray but I think it was out of boredom. I hadn’t let him out the night before because I had work and I assumed he was feeling really cooped up. I also put in a new toy to get his attention someplace else. He hasn’t started chewing on it again, yet…. lol

  A roasting pan should do the trick for you.

  I would be worried about the roasting pan. Buns can easily puncture it and digest the metal.

  I was going to suggest roasting pan too but you make a good point SkippersMama. Maybe a roasting pan (Ikea) set inside a cardboard box so it’s a snug fit?? That way he can’t get to the edges of the pan. You could do this for plastic one also. Obviously you;d have to keep replacing the cardboard box but it will give him something to still sink his teeth into. All that shredded cardboard can be used as litter also. Lol
  
  It could be combo of his age & hormones or maybe he’ll be a lifetime destro-bun but does he get time out of his habitat? Plenty stimulation etc?

  What about a Pyrex pan? They come in different depths and sizes. Just a thought.

  I just saw this litter box at PetSmart the other day. It is made of plant materials (bamboo grass and rice husks). It felt hard to the touch, more like metal, and more weighty than plastic. I don’t know if your rabbit would chew this and how harmful it would be.

  I thought it was a pretty awesome litter box too. I was very surprised when I picked it up and felt the weight of it, and at first thought it was stainless steel or something. It is a large box, for people who have space considerations, and I have no idea about the safety aspects of it if a rabbit does nibble on it. But most of the others are made out of plastic, and you don’t want your rabbit chewing on that.

  If it was a flimsy disposable aluminium one from the supermarket, then yes. I was thinking of a good sturdy one, like the one that’s been in my family for generations for turkeys. I should have been more clear about that. I also should have mentioned making sure it doesn’t have a nonstick coating that Babbity could chew off, come to think of it. So good quality heavy gauge stainless steel with no coatings.

  Thank you for all your suggestions! I didn’t think about a metal roasting pan. That is a great idea! Pyrex a great idea too! Probably much cheaper than trying to find another item made specifically for rabbits. I thought it might be boredom too. I have been working a lot lately and Babbity isn’t much into being picked up so I just let him run around and come get pet when he wants. He has a lot of toys and things to chew on but I don’t think I rotate them as I should. He likes yucca and pumice for chewing (and doesn’t chew on wood blocks at all!) and eats anything made of grass immediately (even when he is given tons of hay everyday). He has a tunnel, some wooden climbing structures (which he also nibbles), a few balls, and some cardboard boxes. I hate to say it, but we are thinking of getting him a hutch to be put on the porch (porch has a roof and ceiling fans) for the Spring/Summer, and then bring him in to play and such. In addition to eating his litter pan, he has been emptying it out with his digging, so it isn’t even serving a purpose. I think this is because it is a new on and doesn’t smell like he should use it. I think I’ll try the pyrex and just monitor his cage to put the freshly used paper bedding into it. Glass doesn’t absorb odors though, so I’m not sure how it will work to get him used to it.

  Beth, why not combine two ideas and put the Pyrex in a cardboard box? If you get a nine by thirteen baking pan the box could give it added depth and the cardboard would absorb some odours which might make it more attractive to him. He might also have the odd munch while he’s in there. Its also a bit of padding for the pan, which can’t hurt. Just an idea.
