Sally’s stomach is so sunken in since we have gotten her home. I can feel every rib and you can clearly see where the rib cage ends because her stomach is so sunken in. Before her spay she felt nice and plump and then suddenly she feels incredibly boney ![]()
I just syringed her some water and she gladly took some water. No eating just yet. I waved some hay in front of her and she took half a strand but she was more interested in her water.
I’m so concerned on how skinny she has gotten in such a short amount of time
Is it because she’s shaved? Meadow looked really skinny because her fur was gone, and she’s a mini Rex, so I think a lop would be more drastic.
She is only shave where the incision is. This is the side shot of her in the loaf position. where it dips is between the hind legs and the rib cage… Do you think she is just sore and kind of sucking it in?
Remember some stuff is also missing that was once there. This might make her look less “full” for a while.
It might just be indented because of the actual organ removal? I honestly don’t know, but I wouldn’t worry unless she starts to act like she’s in pain or doesn’t start eating within about 24 hours.
I have another question about the whole 24 hour thing. Do I wait to the 24 hour mark from when she had her last bite to eat as in her morning breakfast before the spay? Or do I wait 24 hours from the time we picked her up from the spay…
Poor Sally baby. (((((Healing vibes girl))))) It’s a good sign that she’s drinking water! My little girl was in the beginning stages of a stasis after her spay because she was dehydrated. So hydration is good! It keeps the gut going! =] I would definitely try wetting down some really fragrant herbs and waving/tickling her mouth with them. Does Sally like dill, cilantro, mint?
she doesn’t seem to care for her salad. I will have to run out and get some cilantro tomorrow morning (it’s her FAVORITE in the entire world) I don’t think I will be sleeping tonight until I see her eating more hay or eating her veggies. Yeah I gave her like 10-15 sips before she refused anymore water. (all I have is an eye dropper) I think I will go in there every hour and offer her as much water as she desires
I just want things to go back to normal. Spays are so stressful on the both of us! ugh!
Cilantro is a good idea. Often are the first that bunnies are willing to eat.
((((Feel Better Sally)))))
(((Sally))) Im glad to hear her spay is over and done with.
It’s hard to tell from the picture really. Maybe it is the way she is posturing. idk
From House Rabbit Society
The following morning, or at latest by the next evening, it is important for the rabbit to be nibbling something. It doesn’t matter what or how much, as long as she is taking in something, so the digestive tract won’t shut down. If she isn’t, tempt her with everything possible, and as a last resort, make a mush of rabbit pellets (1 part pellets, 2 parts water, run through blender thoroughly, add acidophilus, and feed in pea-sized bits with a feeding syringe through the side of the mouth)
I think the 24hrs is from the operation time onwards as they might still be eating in the holding cage right up to the op time.
Cilantro was a big fail this morning
. She did nibble on a few strands of hay but hasn’t eaten much yet. She has taken some more water though from me. I’m not sure she is drinking from her bowl.
When i set her veggie bowl in front of her she pushed the entire bowl away with her nose. If she doesn’t eat soon I was thinking of making a mush and giving it to her through the syringe before having to leave for work.
I personally wouldn’t force it yet since she has nibbled at some hay. Your call though – you know her best!
Syringing more water wouldn’t hurt. It probably feels uncomfortable to stand at the water bowl. She might want to just stay put and cradle her tummy.
I would leave her veggies with her and you should be able to tell if she’s eaten any by the time you are home again. Is her litterbox fresh so you;ll be able to tell when she’s used it?
ETA: I cannot remember where I read it but vitamin B helps stimulate the appetite. Maybe you could pick up some bottled water that has VitB added?
No worries! She is nibbling on some kale as we speak! It’s such a relief when you see your rabbit take that first initial REAL meal down
I was just extremely worried because of how thin she looks. And if I waited to get food in her until after work that would be a good 36 hours of no food by the time I would get off work. She has a fresh litter box. There are like 4 poos that are tiny in her box and lots of peeing!
Gosh I’m so relieved to get past that hump and get her eating more than a strand of hay
Thanks everyone for the reassurance! If there are any other questions through the healing process I will post here. I don’t know what I would do without y’all when it comes to this except maybe freak out the entire time
Oh and I don’t force the syringe waterings. I just put it at her mouth and she starts drinking. When she stops, I quit offering ![]()
Oh this is very good news!
No worries. I understood you didn’t force the water & she was taking this easily.
I was referring to syringing a recovery food because they can really resist that. I found it tricky to give.
Yay Sally! It’s good to hear that she is doing better! =]
It’s safe to say Sally has made a great recovery. She even broke out of her cage today to try and roam our house! I didn’t think she would try too hard so I just had it shut but didn’t latch it because it usually takes a lot of effort to be able to open it. Came in from outside and Sally was in the hallway! I was happy to see her being active but it was back in she went to get more rest
She is pigging out on her veggies as we speak.
I honestly think she did better than Harley boy at the recovery process! She didn’t sulk as much as he did :p. it’s such a relief to get that over with phew! I wouldn’t even know she was recovering from a major surgery. She is already back to greeting me at the entrance of her cage and everything ![]()
Go Sally!

Awesome! That made me giggle that she’s already made a breakout.
Glad to hear it. ![]()
yay Sally! Nice job taking care of her! She is lucky to have you!!
